It is a busy day at the Krusty Krab and SpongeBob loves every minute of it. He mopped the floor and the ceiling, washed the dishes, and cooked some Krabby Patties. Just then, Mr. Krabs steps out of his office to tell SpongeBob that he is fired. Mr. Krabs explains the reason why he is firing SpongeBob is so he can save a whole nickel. SpongeBob becomes absolutely shocked that he can't move. Squidward loads him onto a cart and rolls him out the door.
That night, Patrick hears moaning coming from SpongeBob's house. He stops by to see what is wrong. SpongeBob explains to Patrick that he got fired from the Krusty Krab. Patrick convinces SpongeBob by telling him that he will teach him about the wonder of FUN-employment the following day.
SpongeBob and Patrick start their day by standing in Squidward's garden and waving at him. Squidward is angered by this and he starts throwing vegetables at them, which Patrick calls a free breakfast. Later that day, SpongeBob and Patrick go to Sandy's treedome for a free lunch. Little did they know, the food was really a science experiment with weird side effects. Patrick finds the food to be delicious and his forehead grows a little face that wants more food. Sandy, however, warns SpongeBob not to eat it and convinces SpongeBob to get a new job.
SpongeBob figures that Sandy is right, and then he goes off walking to find a new job. He thinks he can get another job as a fry cook, so he goes to Weenie Hut. The manager, Mister Weiner, hires him right away, but SpongeBob doesn't like the kitchen. They don't use a grill to cook the hot dogs; they use a strange rolling machine. SpongeBob doesn't think it is right, so he grabs his spatula, uses it to slice a few cooked hot dogs with buns, and makes Weenie Patties. The manager, however, does not like this and decides to fire SpongeBob.
When SpongeBob arrives home that day, he is really depressed. At least Gary still likes his cooking. Just then, there is a knock on the front door. SpongeBob opens the door to find two big men dressed as hot dogs. They shove him into a bun and run away with him.
SpongeBob is taken to Weenie Hut and chained to the hot dog cooker. The manager apologizes for firing him and says that his customers love his Weenie Patties. The manager orders SpongeBob to get to work and marches out of the kitchen. Suddenly, the manager of Pizza Piehole sneaks into the kitchen and frees SpongeBob from the chain by using tomato sauce, only to tie SpongeBob's hands with a garlic breadstick.
When SpongeBob gets outside, he is grabbed by the manager of Wet Noodle. They don't get far before Señor Taco from Taco Sombrero snatches SpongeBob. All the managers want SpongeBob to work for them. They all clutch and pull at him. Suddenly, a giant Krabby Patty comes to the rescue. The big Krabby Patty carries SpongeBob across town to the Krusty Krab. Inside, SpongeBob discovers that Squidward was wearing the costume.
Mr. Krabs tells SpongeBob that he regrets firing him, and he is rehired. SpongeBob looks around and the tables are messy, smoke is pouring from the kitchen, and sauce is dripping from the walls. While SpongeBob is busy working, he notes something strange about the bathroom door. Mr. Krabs explains that it is a pay toilet to make up the nickel he lost. SpongeBob had never been happier to be at work.
