Synopsis[]
A family board game is interrupted by a rainstorm and the arrival of a bat with a scroll. Squidina reads it and finds that her grandmother, Agnes Steelhead, is coming to visit. She has not met her grandmother before, so Cecil explains that she is a Klopnodian which who disapproves of him. After a perfunctory welcome to Patrick and Cecil, Agnes welcomes Bunny and Squidina. She tells Squidina that since she is eight, she can begin the family witch trials to see if she has magic powers. Patrick wants to join, but Agnes casts a magic spell on the couch that makes it grow arms to grab him and Cecil. While Bunny did not learn any magic, she believes being able to keep the house clean is better, which makes Agnes cast a spell to make it dirty.
Squidina and Agnes head outside to try fire spells. Squidina gets a magic wand and tries to fire at a mailbox, but nothing happens. Behind her back, Agnes sets Granny Tentacles' house on fire and claims that Squidina aimed her wrong incorrectly. Next, she tries to brew a transformation potion in the bathroom. Agnes mixes one up and tests it on Cecil, who transforms into Slappy. After Squidina brews her potion, Patrick drinks all of it, but it has no effect. He drinks Agnes's potion and turns into Slappy himself. When GrandPat comes in and sees, he realizes that witchcraft is afoot, turning Patrick back to normal and taking him on a witch hunt.
On top of the house, Agnes is trying to teach Squidina to fly a broom. GrandPat comes out to take Agnes down, but slips and falls off the house. At Squidina's request, Agnes saves him from falling -- however, when GrandPat is still angry, she then sends him on a dangerous broom ride. Squidina calls out her grandmother for being mean. GrandPat returns to Patrick and suggests that they use their own magic against Agnes, taking out a child's magic set to do so.
When Agnes and Squidina come back inside, Patrick has GrandPat doing a magic show. He does stage magician tricks like taking a quarter out from behind her ear and pulling a rabbit out of a hat, but she turns the tables on every one. Enraged, Squidina finally taps into her magical powers and sends Agnes back to Klopnod. When Bunny admires Squidina's powers, she attributes it to simply "movie magic," using a pop-up menu to revert GrandPat back to normal from Agnes's spells.
The screen zooms out to show Squidina editing the episode on her computer. She tells her family that while she thinks being a witch is cool, she's happier to just be producing Patrick's show. Patrick observes a full moon, which makes Squidina turn into a werewolf.

Production notes[]
Trey Chavez:
- Chavez had a fun time plussing the scene where Agnes shows her "utter disdain" for Cecil as she meets the Star family.[6]
- Chavez said that GrandPat's magic show took a lot of lines to draw, especially in his magic get up, calling it "a doozy," although he was happy with how it turned out in the end.[7]

Trivia[]
General[]
- This episode was paired up with "Olly Olly Organ Free" during the original American airing.[8]
- This episode reveals that Bunny's maiden name is Steelhead.
- Squidina breaks the fourth wall when she reveals that the entire episode was actually being edited on her computer.
- When Patrick and Cecil watch TV, the background seen is re-used from the "Noir-Sense" scene in "Bummer Jobs."
Episode references[]
- Bunny's younger self from "The Patterfly Effect" appears in a flashback.
Cultural references[]
- This episode has the same title as a 2003 episode of fellow Nicktoon, The Fairly OddParents!
- This is the second SpongeBob spin-off episode to have its title previously used in that series, after Kamp Koral's "The Switch Glitch."
- The Salem witch trials were also referenced in both episodes, although The Fairly OddParents makes it a bigger focus of their episode.
- The large, strong white rabbit found in GrandPat's magic hat has a similar design to Bugs Bunny from the Looney Tunes franchise when he gets transformed into a Neanderthal rabbit by Marvin the Martian from the Looney Tunes franchise at the end of the 1963 Merrie Melodies cartoon, "Mad as a Mars Hare."
- When GrandPat hears a witch is afoot on the Star premises, he dresses up as a Pilgrim and sets out to hunt them, referencing how Pilgrims convicted, tested and executed supposed "witches" during the 1692 Salem Witch Trials.
- Agnes Steelhead's design was inspired by that of Endora's, the mother-in-law from the 1964 television series Bewitched.[3][6]
- Just like Endora, Agnes loves her daughter and granddaughter very much, but she hates her son-in-law and she calls him different names.
- The wand that Agnes gives Squidina is similar to the wand that Nintendo video game character Kirby from the franchise of the same name uses.
- Cecil and Patrick watch Punch and Judy on the monster couch. In the plussed storyboards, they are drawn alike to the T.V. Puppet Pals, Clem and Mitch, from the Justice Friends segments in Dexter's Laboratory.[6]
Errors[]
- When Squidina gets her wand, the button on her shirt turns transparent for a frame.
