Hi, everyone! It's me, Doctor Patrick, and today, I am going to review the season which is widely regarded as the most boring and forgettable thing SpongeBob has ever put out: Season 8. Just like Seasons 6 and 7, this season mostly has a reception which is not really mixed, because people mostly tend to agree on its quality, so there isn't a huge debate regarding this season, unlike Seasons 4 or 5. And this reception mostly seems to be: ehhhhhh. Generally, people state that this is the season where the writers just kinda gave up on ideas and started to write episodes which are mostly not anything truly abysmal, but also not special either, so the average quality of the episode mostly raises from mildly entertaining to just mediocre. There are a few gems and disasters here and there, sure, but whenever people talk about them, they still mostly state that those are the minority of the episodes and even if they are truly terrible or truly amazing, most of the episodes in this season are just completely in the middle. So, do I agree with the general consensus here? Do I find this season to be actually really good or really bad, or do I think that this season is as meh as people say? Well.... that is what we will see today. With that said, though, let's get to it!

History[]

Honestly, I am not sure why I am even bothering with this here. This season clearly doesn't deserve to have my personal history with it discussed here, but since I wrote about my history with the season in every one of my season reviews starting from Season 5, I will gloss over this as soon as possible, so I can finally start talking about how bad this season truly is. Yeah, I know that I gave away a spoiler about my thoughts on the season, but I just seriously cannot pretend that I like this sad excuse for a SpongeBob season in any way. We are in a looooong ride for sure, so get ready for this review as I quickly write down my history with the season before we get to the really interesting parts of this review. Brace yourselves, because this is a hell of a season to get through, and my review will do nothing but express that to the fullest extent. I warned you.

So, just like with Seasons 6 and 7, I don't really have that much of a history with this season as a really young kid. I do remember seeing a few episodes like Planet of the Jellyfish and A SquarePants Family Vacation, but because I wasn't really critcial about any of the episodes back then, I don't remember my thoughts on any of them. The first episode that I watched and fully had a true opinion on was Are You Happy Now?. And boy, did it suck. Along with Stuck in the Wringer and Someone's in the Kitchen with Sandy, AYHN? was the episode that legit made me give up on the show as a kid and even made me stop watching it for several months. I just found it so unpleasant, badly handled and just overall uncomfortable that I was legit sad that the show I used to love turned out like this. So I stopped watching it for quite some time and didn't really bother to think about it until I started seeing some SpongeBob reviews on YouTube. These reviews raised my attention to episodes I have never even seen before or watched such a long time ago that I don't even remember what my initial reaction to them was, and they also made me curious about what I think the quality of them will be. So, I started watching the show again, and guess what - this season was one of the first that I started watching. I remember seeing episodes like Patrick's Staycation, Frozen Face Off and The Good Krabby Name when I started watching the show again and because I actually really enjoyed them, I was excited to check out the rest of Season 8 later. And oh boy, the rest of the season did not hold up well at all. While there were still a few episodes that I really liked, some of them were even amazing for me, most of the season was similar to Seasons 6 and 7 for me, because there were a lot of episodes that I just really hated. Examples of these include Demolition Doofus, House Sittin' for Sandy and Squidward's School for Grown-Ups, episodes that I absolutely detested and never wanted to see again. And sadly, because of that, when I joined the wiki, this season was my third least favourite behind Seasons 6 and 7, and also one of the three seasons that I considered bad. However, when I decided to rewatch the series, I was ready to have my mindset on it completely changed and maybe even enjoy it a lot. I mean, I really liked Season 6, right? And I also enjoyed Season 7 despite having a few really big stinkers, right? So there is ABSOLUTELY NO WAY that I would still dislike this season..... right?

Ooooooh boy..... we are in a really long ride indeed. A really, REALLY long ride.

Animation[]

So, I am gonna subvert all of your expectations here and actually start off this review with something POSITIVE. Don't worry, this won't last for long. So, this might be a really interesting and unusual opinion, but I actually really like this season's animation. Sure, it isn't anything amazing or even anything THAT great if we are being honest, but honestly.... it is pretty good for what it is. One of my favourite things about this season's animation is that the colouring is a MAJOR improvement from Seasons 6-7. If you remember my Season 6 review, I often said that the animation of S6 was just outright unbearable to see and a huge part in that was that the colouring just looked sorta off for most of the season. The colours were either incredibly pale, similarly to S2's pale animation in a few episodes, but even worse in this case, as they were even more washed up and made not only SpongeBob, but also the other characters and even the BACKGROUNDS pale, or just outright unfitting, because even though they tried with them, the designs were so weird and unsettling that the colours just looked out of place. Even Season 7, which improved in that regard, had issues with its colouring since even though it was a lot better than what Season 6 had to offer, the colours could still be a tad too pale sometimes and did look a bit off in a few places. This season, however, REALLY fixed this problem. Similarly to what Seasons 3 and 5 had to offer, this season used brighter colours than most of the show, but knew when to tone them down, so nothing in it became pale at all, and therefore, the season just really looked nice as a result. Don't get me wrong, Seasons 3 and 5 still looked a lot better as they knew when to be expressive a lot more than this season (which is something that we will get to later), and even if this season improved in the colouring, those seasons still had better character designs so the colours fit the designs more, but I still have to give credit to this season animation-wise because it is a major improvement over the previous seasons which came before it. Another thing that I am a fan of is the designs of the characters. While Season 7 was admittedly an improvement from Season 6 in terms of its designs, it was this season that finally fixed that one's issues, so it never had to come up again. The textures in this season don't look all over the place and weird, the lines of the characters are drawn very well, and even if there are issues in the expressiveness of the characters, this season can still cleverly solve them.... on most occassions. So yeah, based on what I said now, the animation in this season is actually something I enjoy a lot, despite people often hating on it. And considering that the season which came after it, changed to HD Nanimation, I am at least glad that we could end this era of animation on a considerably high note.

However.... here's the problem. Even if the colouring of this season is well done, the designs are rather pleasant and the textures and lines of the characters look really appealing and nice, this animation is sadly still affected by the writing of the episodes. Yeah, I know that this sounds strange mostly because this wasn't a complaint before, but the writing in this season is so outright terrible, so lazy and so incredibly horrific in literally every way, that it actually somehow manages to downgrade the animation. Hear me out for a second: this is a season which can fix the problems of Seasons 6 and 7 cleverly in almost every way animation-wise, so when it finally has a chance of going out with its expressions and having some really neat exaggerations to it, it just completely stops and decides to be as wooden as the two seasons before it for literally no reason whatsoever. I am sure that this is not the animators' fault and that they did what they can, but this season in general has a really lazy feel to it and that sadly also applies to the animation. Sometimes, the episodes do have some nice expressions, like the beginning of Restraining SpongeBob which gives some really nice movements to the characters, but most of the time, it is painfully obvious that the season should have some wackiness to it, but it decides to be as stiff as Seasons 6-7 even though it could be a lot more. And when the episode finally does incorporate some of this in episodes like Face Freeze!, it instead makes the faces as overly detailed and grotesque as possible instead of having some of the wacky expressions that it could have used. I am not a fan of the animation of Season 11 and I do think it went a tad too overboard with its exaggeratins, but my God, this season clearly could have borrowed some of the technics that season used because people sadly remember this season as being as stiff as Seasons 6-7, even though it is obvious by the few times when they tried with the expressions alone and looked really nice as a result, that it is not the case. Despite this issue, however, I cannot avoid all of the pros that this season has animation-wise. I may have ragged on a lot of things here, but all of the positives that I previously mentioned make me really like the season's animation and appreciate it despite the few cons that unfortunately affect it a lot. So yeah, even though before this point, I could say that Season 5 was the last season with good animation, but luckily, this season proves to me that the show can still produce some really nice animation, even if it is nothing more than that, sadly. As it stands, this seasonb's animation is better than Seasons 6 and 7 for sure and maybe even Season 2, but I am debating whether this season or Season 4 has better animation, because even if this season looks a lot better than Season 4 on a technical scale, that season at least made the most it can with its animation, while this season tends to be the exact opposite in that regard. And that unfortunately lowers down its animation a lot.

Stories[]

Oh boy, the stories. OH BOY, THE STORIES. I will be honest with you guys, I knew after Season 7 that the show was going in a negative direction and that it will have a season that will actually go below enjhoyable territory and become something that even I cannot enjoy. But still, I haven't expected the stories of this season to be THIS BAD. I am not kidding when I say that this season legitimately commits EVERYTHING in order to make its stories as dull and dry as possible, and sometimes, it legit feels like it doesn't even try with anything whatsoever. Let's get the elephant in the room: this season tends to reuse ideas from the previous seasons A LOT. While some people tend to bash quite a few of the episodes of Seasons 6 and 7, calling them ripoffs of previous episodes, In personally think that aside from a few exceptions, they at least TRIED to be original and tried to go in their own direction when they executed their plots. I would even defend the infamous Imitation Krabs ripoffs in Season 7 because as bad as Someone's in the Kitchen with Sandy was and as mediocre as Gramma's Secret Recipe was, most of their problems at least didn't come from being ripoffs of that episode and I can at least see what they were going for. But jeez, this season doesn't only rip off episodes, but also does it in the most blatant and dull way imaginable. Home Sweet Rubble, for example, is an episode that was clearly a ripoff of Home Sweet Pineapple. However, whereas that episode was really funny and entertaining, this episode is essentially the opposite in every single way. Remember how that one was able to start itself in a relatively fast way which still didn't feel rushed? Well, guess what, this season legitimately takes 3 minutes to start and instead of those 3 minutes serving anything, they are just there as useless filler. Remember how that episode had creative ways of them trying to build a house? Well, here, there is nothing of that found and just pure and sheer boredom instead. Remember how that episode had jokes which were admittedly dragged out but still had some kind of fun to them as they were at least creative with their execution and provided a lot of variation? Well, you cannot get that here and you have to watch jokes like Patrick being this office worker and doing nothing and blatantly staring at us for 40 SECONDS. THIS DOESN'T EVEN PASS AS ANTI-HUMOR. LITERALLY DO SOMETHING, PLEASE. I am trying to be as nice as I can with this, but it just frustrates me how bad the writing of this season can be. And it is even worse when the season rips off bad episodes from the previous seasons, but somehow even makes me appreciate those ones more, because their ripoffs are even worse. Yeah, as bad as Grandma's Kisses could be with its stereotypical and somewhat cruel telling of a story of how people can handle growing up, at least it wasn't something like Squidward's School for Grown-Ups, which aside from commiting those issues, also had none of the emotional investment that Grandma's Kisses at least had sometimes and was also incredibly stale and repetitive, which was something that Grandma's Kisses didn't even suffer from that much. Seriously, it is like this season tries to downgrade its episodes as much as it can for no reason, other than the show running out of ideas. And oh boy, the fact that this season is running out of ideas is clearly obvious.

This season comes up with the really nice and entertaining idea that literally half of it is just a typical "Plankton tries to steal the formula" plot. I am not even exaggerating here, because even though I really enjoy Plankton plots, this season does them in the least creative ways imaginable. Remember how Season 6 used them really well as it added a lot of unique things and creativity to them to make the most typical and generic plots ever really interesting and entertaining? Well, in this season, you have episodes like Free Samples, which instead of having any creativity to them, boil down to the dullest and least interesting things ever with having luterally stuff like Plankton and Mr. Krabs just trying to sell chum or krabby patties without any interesting or funny things surrounding that, making the episode feel repetitive, boring, forgettable and just overall insanely dragged out. Even some of the most creative ideas this season has are almost completely wasted as even though they SOUND like they will be really unique and exciting episodes, in reality, they are as safe and lifeless as ever. Plankton's Good Eye sounds like a really interesting episode which explains why Plankton was never able to steal the formula and it also has a really fresh and original plot. The actual episode, however, is just an unfunny and boring version of episodes like F.U.N., which doesn't even attempt to be anything interesting, and instead just drags itself out for no reason. Pet Sitter Pat sounds like an interesting enough episode which can maybe take a similar approach to A Pal for Gary, but all the episode is is just Patrick being really stupid in ways that are honestly really annoying, and repeating the same joke about how he is unable to properly take care of Gary for most of the episode. Easily my least favourite episode of the season and also the entire show at this point is House Sittin' for Sandy. That episode has almost zero semblance of a normal plot, but even the few amount of plot that it has is destroyed by spending the episode on continuous dragged out scenes that don't amount to anything noteworthy aside from the episode being incredibly boring and dull, it has almost no pacing as there is literally no conflict for most of the episode, since a good chunk of it is filled with a filler beginning and Sandy explaining things to SpongeBob in a really lame and tedious way, and SpongeBob already does most of the things in a minute which could have served as the exciting factors of the episode, so the climax basically has to come out of nowhere and also has to be extremely anti-climactic, which is just shocking considering the type of episode we are talking about here, and it is also one of the unfunniest and laziest episodes ever with literally zero things I even chuckled at. Seriously, Sandy appreciating one of the things SpongeBob says is the only remotely good thing in the episode, and considering that IT DOESN'T EVEN HAVE ANYTHING TO DO WITH THE EPISODE ITSELF, this is saying a lot about how abysmal it is. So, are all of the stories in this season bad? Well, I actually wouldn't say that. Even if most of the creative ideas are extremely wasted in most of the episodes and just feel the dullest and least interesting things ever, there are quite a few times when the episode actually executes its ideas really well. Episodes like Frozen Face-Off use the main characters really well, have really interesting and intriguing conflicts in them and just overall feel really unique and creative. Another example for this is Ghoul Fools, which actually utilises its scary and unsettling atmosphere to make for some really great visuals, a really interesting story which actually makes you excited while you are watching it and a lot of creativity which is done really well in the episode. Still, for the most part, this season absolutely fails with its writing. And you know that this is bad when most of the episodes are just the lamest and most boring excuses of content to ever come out of SpongeBob SquarePants.

Humor[]

So, the stories of this season have been pretty subpar for the most part. But is the comedy any better? Well.... somewhat yes, but it is still not something that I would call good at all. I admit that some episodes in this season do really make me laugh. Episodes like A Friendly Game and The Good Krabby Name utilise a lot of different kinds of humor and I personally think that they succeed in delivering almost all of them. In these episodes, there are types of comedy like random humor where things basically come out of nowhere and therefore really work (ex.: there being an actual audience behind Patrick in A Friendly Game when he narrates the events or an actual skywriter in The Good Krabby Name) and exaggerated humor where most of the jokes work by the amount of exaggeration that they add to them (ex.: Patrick's routine in A Friendly Game or the drive thrus causing madness in Drive Thru). There are other types of comedy as well in these episodes and I think that they succeed a lot as well, because these episodes know when to use humor in them and when to continue with the story, so the jokes won't completely stop the plot or feel out of place. However, most of the time, the humor in this season just feels as stale and lame as most of the writing itself. Because the actual writing of the episodes is so incredibly dull and lifeless, most of the jokes are also incredibly dull and lifeless, being either awfully dragged out like the aforementioned office worker scene in Home Sweet Rubble or Patrick calling Sandy in the same episode, or being really repetitive, like most of the jokes from Pet Sitter Pat or Plankton's Good Eye, where the jokes could have been good, but they are just repeated over and over without any variation to them and it is honestly just insufferable to watch because not only do they genuinely annoy the audience, but they also make the punchline of the jokes completely predictable and therefore it is IMPOSSIBLE to even laugh at any of them. What is even worse is that a lot of episodes barely try with their comedy whatsoever and either add little to no humor in scenes which should have been really funny or just expect us to laugh at how annoying and stupid the characters are. Gags like SpongeBob and Patrick screaming at boats continuously in Squidward's School for Grown-Ups or SpongeBob being uncaring and ignorant about Mrs. Puff's pain in Demolition Doofus are prime examples of this, and they just make the episodes even more infuriating as a result, because even if people hate similar things in Seasons 6-7, at least those had some good anti-humor to cover that up and at least I could somewhat see what the writers were going for there, whereas here, I legit have no idea what the humor is even supposed to be in a lot of places.

Similarly to Season 7, I am adding the characterization section to the humor section, because here, it is not even anything worth mentioning. Most of the characters in this season are just reduced to the most plain and one-dimensional version of their former selves without them even being anything funny in the first place. Most of the episodes, like Demolition Doofus or Squidward's School for Grown-Ups have SpongeBob be really annoying and outright insufferable to watch or just completely ignorant to the things happening around him. Even Patrick, a character I defended a lot in Seasons 6 and 7 and called overhated because of the few episodes that people blew out of proportion, has now become a completely stale version of his former self, where he is just entirely stupid and doesn't know anything around him, only instead of being charming with it, the episodes exaggerate this to the point when he is legit unbearable to watch. I am not even kidding, episodes like Smoothe Jazz in Bikini Bottom literally utilise Patrick as nothing but a plot device who eats Squidward's backstage passes for no reason, because the episode expects us to find him shoving random objects into his mouth really funny and amusing. Even in some of the better episodes of the season, like Patrick's Staycation, he is an ungrateful jerk about all of the things that happen to him, and that is such a shame because the rest of the things are so funny and enjoyable that it just kinda drags the whole episode down as a result. Sandy at this point has just completely lost all of her potential and just became a one-dimensional scientist, but here, it is even worse than in the previous seasons, because here, she is basically used as a PLOT DEVICE in the episodes just to solve the conflict. Come on, even great episodes like Planet of the Jellyfish just decide to only include her because she can be a plot device and solve everything. And granted, she can still be a different character in a few episodes like Bubble Troubles whichz at least tries to have her in a unique and interesting way even if it mostly fails in its presentation and this is an issue which gets somewhat worse in post-sequel, but this season still has her as just a stereotypical character who does nothing to even amuse me whatsoever. I guess there are a few characters like Squidward and Plankton who are more bearable than the rest, but even then, most of the characters in this season have completely lost their touch, and adding the fact that there is barely any sort of humor to be found here makes this even worse as a result.

Verdict[]

As you can tell, this season was a really huge slog to get through. Despite the OCCASSIONAL positive I have to say about the animation generally being really nice and pleasing and a few episodes being rather creative and funny, most of the writing is completely dull, either ripping off previous episodes and sucking out the life out of them, making them entirely unfunny and dragged out, or ruining potential interesting ideas with making them really predictable and repetitive. The characters are also severely uninteresting and basically lost all of what was good about them in the previous seasons and the humor is either really stale and boring or just completely nonexistant. Despite there being quite a few good episodes in this season, I still wouldn't recommend watching this season just for them because most of these episodes are just mildly enjoyable at best and even the ones that are great or amazing just pale in comparison to the best episodes of Seasons 1-7. And if we add the fact that the worst episodes here are worse than what we have previously seen before, this season becomes even less recommendable and even more of an outlier in the show which needs to be avoided s much as possible. Seriously, there are literally 4 Odious episodes in this season, which is legit twice as many as the number of Odious episodes in Season 1, the season with the most amount of Odious episodes before this one, and exactly as many as the number of Odious episodes in Seasons 1-7. Not to mention that unlike Seasons 6 and 7 where even though the bad episodes filled up the entirety of the Bottom 10, at least they barely did that because there were about 10 or 12 of them in the whole season and most of them were just standard bad or even high bad, with only a few big stinkers, just barely less than half of the season here is bad and the Bottom 10 is entirely dominated by episodes that fall into the Abysmal section (being either Odious, Abhorrent or Disgusting), which is really bad when you realise that they didn1t even fill up the BOTTOM 5 of Seasons 1-6 and just barely managed to fill up the Bottom 5 of Season 7, but still not the Bottom 10.

As for my rating, it is honestly really questionable. Based on what I previously said, you may think that this season will be in the bad section, either getting an Unsatisfactory or maybe even a plain Bad rating. However, strangely enough, the statistics of the season actually made that season AVOID a bad rating. Both of this season's mean and median rating in this case are an Intermediate, so even if I wanted to give this season a bad rating, it would basically be impossible. However, this is still easily my least favourite season of SpongeBob SquarePants and it is still FAR below all of the other seasons in the show, but the statistics save this season from being bad and amount to an EXTREMELY low meh, meaning that Season 8 is an Intermediate (2.5/5) season. But this is still ONLY thanks to the statistics of the season as I clearly would have given this season an Unsatisfactory has it not been for them. Stay tuned for next time when I will review Season 9A in a similar style, and until then, take care of yourselves.

Bottom 5[]

#5. Are You Happy Now?

Are You Happy Now? title card

This episode is basically One Coarse Meal but somehow even worse. Whereas with that episode, at least I did see what the writers wanted to do, even if it was horribly botched, but with this one, I have absolutely no idea what they wanted to do at all. The first half with this episode is insanely repetitive with just essentially bad things happening Squidward in dull and unfunny ways and the second half is an absolutely horrible way of portraying deppression where the jokes are so incredibly out of place and kill the tone so much that the episode itself honestly feels offensive. Top it off with a horrible copout ending and you get an episode that is completely hard to watch due to its many bad qualities.

#4. Smoothe Jazz at Bikini Bottom

Smoothe Jazz at Bikini Bottom title card

Aside from Jellyfishing, this is easily the worst Squidward torture episode so far. While there were some Squidward torture episodes that I disliked in the past, at least I could somewhat appreciate their creativity, but with this, there is zero creativity to be found. Most of this episode is either SpongeBob being horrendously annoying in ways that are not charming or funny whatsoever or Patrick literally just being used as a plot device to give Squidward more and more torment, but unlike episodes that handled his suffering well, like Cephalopod Lodge or Good Neighbors, it is so incredibly forced and hammered in here that there is no enjoyment to be found in this one at all.

#3. Sentimental Sponge

Sentimental Sponge title card

This might be the most boring and dull episode I have ever seen in my life. I will admit that the idea of SpongeBob hoarding does sound interesting enough, especially with it potentially being relatable to some people, but the problem is that the episode barely exaggerates any of this, so therefore, we have to watch complete emptiness for 11 minutes where SpongeBob just pretty much collects stuff without any humor made around it and the sanitation police also showing up sometimes, but even that part of the episode is incredibly bland and forgettable. It also has a really forced and nonsensical ending to top it off, so basically, this is 11 minutes of an absolute snoozefest with no redeeming qualities.

#2. Demolition Doofus

Demolition Doofus title card

Wow, I am just shocked how absolutely abysmal this episode is. There are some really infamous episodes that I personally really enjoy, like A Pal for Gary, there are some really infamous episodes that I do dislike but still consider somewhat overhated, like Truth or Square and then there is this episode, which is already very infamous, but I think it should still get more hate than it currently receives because it is so incredibly terrible. With a completely horrible portrayal of both Mrs. Puff and SpongeBob where I have absolutely no idea who to even root for, some of the most boring and lame action and just completely forced and out of place things happening to move the plot forward, this episode manages to be tedious and frustrating at the same time, making it esily not just the second worst of the season, but also the second worst of the show so far.

#1. House Sittin' for Sandy

House Sittin' for Sandy title card

So this episode is pretty much the worst of the show so far. There have certainly been some pretty horrible episodes so far with abysmal pacing, really forced and unfunny cruelty towards characters or really unpleasant and stupid humor, but this one is just the epitome of not trying at all. Even though there were pretty empty episodes before where barely anything happened, this one just tops all of them, because the way it was written really makes it seem like the writers were trying to drag every single scene out in order to make an episode with completely no plot whatsoever which is honestly laughable due to how bad it is. At least with the other bad episodes so far, I could find a few good jokes or at least a few good things with its story, but since this one has no story or humor, I cannot find a single good thing about it.

Top 5[]

#5. Planet of the Jellyfish

Planet of the Jellyfish title card

Unlike most episodes from this season, this one is actually pretty creative with a story that provides some great and haunting atmosphere, some really intense moments that create amazing tension and suspense and jokes that make this episode still fit into this series despite it being so experimental in every single way. This episode is still not outright amazing, mostly because Sandy really is just used as a plot device here, but still, I have to give it a lot of credit for being a lot more enjoyable and entertaining than most episodes from Season 8.

#4. Frozen Face-Off

Frozen Face-Off title card

Out of all of the specials in this season, this one is easily the best. With some fantastic atmosphere related to this really unique tundra environment, some fantastic interractions between the characters who all work together really well and are all given important and memorable roles, and some of the best action in the whole season, this one is just absolute excitement for 11 minutes. It also has really great multiple conflicts which help to increase the tension here and also make the stakes higher, and they are simply just so creative that this one is really just a blast to watch.

#3. Drive Thru

Drive Thru title card

The idea of a drive thru in the Krusty Krab is honestly so interesting and provides so many great possibilities that I am surprised that they didn't make an episode like this before. However, this is not a problem at all since even though this episode is in a season which is mostly really dull and forgettable, it still manages to really succeed thanks to its creativity utilised from all of the possibilities the drive thru has, its really good action that makes the episode really exciting and intense and some pretty amazing jokes that provide a really great comedy here, especially for this season.

#2. The Good Krabby Name

The Good Krabby Name title card

This is an episode with a really simple plot that juat manages to make amazing usage out of it. All of the ways SpongeBob and Patrick try to gather cutsomers to the Krusty Krab are simply hilarious and the fact that they are all so exaggerated and end up with a punchline that is completely unexpected but still really works purely because of that is something that's really not common in this season and I wish most of the other episodes here would be like this.

#1. A Friendly Game

A Friendly Game title card

Easily the funniest episode in the whole season. The idea of SpongeBob and Patrick playing minigolf in all these different and creative ways sounds absolutely awesome as it would provide a lot of great action, humor and creativity and luckily, this episode manages to do exactly that. Almost every single joke hits, the situations SpongeBob and Patrick get themselves into are really cartoonish and enjoyable yet still have stakes and manage to be exciting and all of the ways they play this sport are just so creative that I am honestly shocked that this episode is from this season. This just proves that Season 8 may be a lot weaker than the other seasons, but at least it is still able to produce masterpieces and this episode is just exactly that.
