Synopsis

Act 1

Patchy the Pirate is holding a TV Extravaganza and is waiting for SpongeBob to show up to it, but with no reply, he thinks back to all of the time that has passed without SpongeBob giving him a reply. He then sets out to find SpongeBob, and rides his boat to Bikini Atoll.

The animated section of the episode then begins with SpongeBob waking up in the morning with the help of many alarm clocks lined up to the foghorn clock, only to blow out more clocks, thus waking SpongeBob up. He then reveals that it is the eleventy-seventh year anniversary since Mr. Krabs officially opened the Krusty Krab. He then remembered the first time he ate a Krabby Patty, and he apparently loved it, even though he was not born yet when he had it. He prepares himself by getting ready in various wacky ways. While we see SpongeBob's getting ready process, the song "A Day Like This" can be heard. After he finishes getting ready, SpongeBob rushes all the way to the Krusty Krab when he bumps into the customers waiting in line to get into the restaurant, and he knows that he cannot be late for this, so he jumps over the crowd's heads.

Truth or Square 06

SpongeBob getting ready for 117th anniversary.

SpongeBob arrives at the Krusty Krab where Mr. Krabs reminds them to keep a close eye on all of the doors, and entrances, including the air vents, to make sure that Plankton does not sneak in during the eleventy-seventh year anniversary festivities. Meanwhile, at the Chum Bucket, Plankton spoke with his computer wife, Karen, about how he has been a failure for 50 years of business, while Mr. Krabs has been nothing but successful. In order to redeem himself and finally get his hands on the Krabby Patty secret formula, Plankton decides that he will sneak into the Krusty Krab while the employees and Mr. Krabs are distracted by the festivities, and steal the formula.

Act 2

Back at the live action segments, after Patchy ran off, P!nk and many other celebrities are sat down waiting around for their turn to perform in the extravaganza as promised. P!nk and her band decided it would be a good idea to practice their performance while they wait. They then begin to play the song titled "We've Got Scurvy."

Returning to Bikini Bottom, Mr. Krabs decides to put SpongeBob in charge of decorating the Krusty Krab. Squidward reminds Mr. Krabs what had happened the other time SpongeBob got to decorate (which then cuts to a flash-back of SpongeBob's former decorating failure), but this time he was going to use the resources that he already had in the restaurant including napkins, ketchup, mustard, and inflatable Krabby patties as balloons. Meanwhile, Patrick had been hired by Mr. Krabs as security. They then went to the freezer to see the ice sculpture SpongeBob had made for the Krabby Patty. After entering the freezer, the door accidentally gets locked behind them, thus trapping them. The four of them decide to bust into the air ducts in an effort to escape.

Truth or Square 64

While in the air ducts, Mr. Krabs finds a wrapper from an older Patty. Mr. Krabs then had a flashback of an old black and white Krusty Krab commercial. SpongeBob and the gang then go into another room where they discover many hidden cameras. On many monitors, they see that SpongeBob, Patrick and Squidward's houses were on camera. Mr. Krabs acts as though he doesn't know why there are hidden cameras, although it is heavily referred that he is responsible for them. At that very moment, it is revealed that there are two men recording them from behind as they appear on one of the monitors. Mr. Krabs then suggests that they split up to find a way out. Mr. Krabs goes it alone while the other three stick together. Ultimately they just end up all together again a few moments later. Meanwhile, Plankton had reached the Krusty and was searching through the air ducts to find a way to the formula, but he was having no such luck. Plankton eventually falls right into the duct the gang is in.

Act 3

Back on the surface, Patchy sailed through the sewers and on to the ocean. After sailing for a while he almost makes it to Bikini Bottom but is stopped short and eaten by a whale.

Back with the gang, SpongeBob remembers the time that Mr. Krabs had first told him the formula. Plankton leans in, in an attempt to find out what the formula is but the Mr. Krabs in the flashback grabs Plankton and throws him down an air duct. After moving further through the air ducts, Squidward remembers the days before SpongeBob lived in Bikini Bottom, but SpongeBob interrupts him to remind him how great it was when he first moved in. Mr. Krabs' wallet then begins going crazy over all of the loose change he isn't earning from the customers waiting in line outside, so Mr. Krabs lets the wallet go so it can get to the money, only to be picked up by an unsuspecting man. Patrick then pulls out a radio transmitter he had taken from Sandy. They then attempt to call Sandy and have her come rescue them but Patrick destroys the transmitter after he thinks that Sandy is trapped inside it. SpongeBob then remembers the time that he and Sandy got married through a flash-back, only for it to be revealed that the whole thing was just a play.

Truth or Square 77

SpongeBob and Sandy's play.

Act 4

We return to Patchy, now stuck in the belly of a whale, where he plays some supposed scenes of SpongeBob before it had first aired, including the Squidward, Patrick, and Mr. Krabs theme songs. His camera suddenly goes haywire which results in the whale sneezing him out, and launching him right back into the studio. He is knocked unconscious and starts dreaming that he is in Bikini Bottom by SpongeBob's Pineapple where he meets the titular sponge himself. He was then knocked out again, this time in his dream. He then wakes up to see the celebrities in the studio who tell him he can see SpongeBob everywhere, and they proceed to knock him unconscious once again.

Returning to the gang, at this point, SpongeBob had decided to use all of the gang as a battering ram to break through the air duct. After several tries the gang bust through only to discover that all of the customers were gone due to them waiting so long without getting any food. Mr. Krabs becomes heartbroken and believes the anniversary to be ruined, however, SpongeBob begins to sing the Krusty Krab song, "Oh, Krusty Krab," which brings all of the customers back as they form a circle and start singing with SpongeBob. The Krusty Krab then returns to business and the celebration is ready to begin. Mr. Krabs also goes after the customer who had taken his wallet. Meanwhile, Plankton, on the other hand, was discovered by Mr. Krabs and was blown into a balloon after he pleads with him not to launch him.

The episode ends with SpongeBob wishing the restaurant a happy eleventy-seventh anniversary.

During the epilogue, the narrator compares Patchy to Blackbeard and says that Patchy is not much of a pirate compared to him. He then says he'll see the kids on the 20th anniversary, 10 years from the episode they'd just seen, which is the time between this and "SpongeBob's Big Birthday Blowout."

Release

Reception

  • Currently retired critic Roy Hrab of the DVD Verdict called on a review of the DVD release of the same name the episode, "the lamest SpongeBob episode ever," calling it "all filler, extremely boring, with the story going nowhere, and little action or mania," while also criticizing the Patchy segments and the celebrity cameos as "drawing attention to the episode's lack of substance."[1]

Trivia

General

Dora Can Be Seen!
  • At the beginning, when Patchy arrives, a Dora the Explorer poster can be seen outside of the Nickelodeon Animation Studio. Also, if one looks closely, they can see a poster of Aang from Avatar: The Last Airbender. And if one looks even closer, they can see Cosmo from The Fairly OddParents for a second.
  • This is the first episode with the new Nickelodeon change-orange lowercase letters that spell "nick."
    • The new logo was adopted in 2009.
    • However, on the photo to the right, the 1985 logo can be seen.
  • The beginning of the episode starts at the Nickelodeon Animation Studio. This marks the second appearance of that studio in SpongeBob SquarePants. The first is in "The Sponge Who Could Fly."

"Stuck in the Freezer" title card

  • In Latin America, Spain, and Brazil, the title is "Stuck in the Freezer." If the Russian version is translated, it is also the same.
  • This is the third episode to have an alternate theme song. The first is "Christmas Who?" and the second is "What Ever Happened to SpongeBob?"
  • It is revealed that Tina Fey is also a fan of SpongeBob when she says "I'm not much of a singer, but I love SpongeBob" during her phone call with Patchy.
  • This episode marks the first time in the series that stop-motion animation used.
  • This is the very first special and episode to be broadcast in widescreen (16:9 or 1:78:1) format to fit an HDTV.
    • Notable changes for this episode, as a result, is that the bubble transitions have a different sound effect, and the title card cuts to the opening credits instead of fading in.
    • However, the series itself did not switch to widescreen format until season 9.
  • This is the second TV movie of the series. The first is "Atlantis SquarePantis."
  • This is the first special to count as two episodes (123 and 124). The second is "SpongeBob's Big Birthday Blowout" (254 and 255).
  • This is the only episode/TV movie to be produced in 720p. "It's a SpongeBob Christmas!" and all of the other widescreen episodes are produced in 1080p.
  • This continues the theme of every SpongeBob movie premiering in November; "Atlantis SquarePantis" and The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie also premiered in November, with the exception of The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water, which was released in February 2015.
  • Mrs. Puff is good at playing the "Wedding March" according to SpongeBob's flashback of him and Sandy "getting married."
  • This episode premiered on November 6, 2009, to an audience of 7.7 million viewers, making it the third highest-viewed Nick premiere of 2009, behind "iFight Shelby Marx" and "iQuit iCarly."
  • This episode preceded the series premiere of the Nickelodeon animated series Fanboy and Chum Chum.
  • This episode premiered on November 14, 2009 in Poland, eight days after it aired in the USA on the 6th.[2]
  • It is revealed that SpongeBob did not grow up in Bikini Bottom, and Squidward dislikes him because his house landed on his garden, which was not SpongeBob's fault. Although, some episodes state that he and his friends did grow up together. Squidward should've been grounded and punished for hating SpongeBob and everyone and have Will Smith voice him.
  • At the very beginning of the episode, instead of playing his nose as a flute, SpongeBob plays it as a trombone.
  • The Nickelodeon Magazine issue with the SpongeBash party on it has the lyrics for the other characters' theme songs inside.
  • If a baby was able to pull out its umbilical cord in real-life, it would die because the cord acts as an oxygen tube.
  • When SpongeBob laughs after saying "Yee-haw!" in a flashback, his laugh sounds gargled but on the next scene, his laugh is normal. The reason for the gargled laughter is to probably fit the old Western theme.
  • When they flashback to every time SpongeBob decorated, the two fish at the Krusty Krab are the same.
  • When Patchy drives the boat past the studio, a drawing of Squidward on the wall of the studio can be seen.
  • Even though SpongeBob and Sandy's wedding was a play, SpongeBob calls it "...the time [he] and Sandy got married."
  • During the credits for this TV movie, instead of the usual theme music, Squidward sings the song "Beautiful Dreamer."
  • It is revealed that SpongeBob has three moles and a birthmark on his back.
  • The theme song is sung by Cee-Lo Green.
  • Even though it was just a dream, this is the second TV movie where Patchy meets the real SpongeBob. The first is "Atlantis SquarePantis," which was also a dream in that episode.
  • Mr. Krabs breaks the fourth wall twice by mentioning flashbacks.
  • A "Dunces and Dragons" poster can be seen in the waiting room Patchy was in.
  • This special has three opening parodies, with Patrick, Mr. Krabs, and Squidward replacing SpongeBob. Also, the live-action mouth on the captain changes.
  • There are three versions of this episode:
Nickelodeon foot logo in Truth or Square

Nickelodeon Animation Studio foot logo

    • Version 1: The original airing of the episode, which lasts 51 minutes, excluding commercials. It is the version found on iTunes, and is also seen on the Pilot a Mini-Movie and the Square Shorts DVD. This version used to be on Netflix, but was later switched to using version 2. This version also has an exclusive closeup shot of the foot logo on the Nickelodeon Animation Studio.
    • Version 2: An alternate version of the episode that is used in reruns. It often shown in two parts.
Truth or Square in 2 parts on Netflix

Part 1 and part 2 on Netflix.

This version removes the Patchy scenes at the beginning, as well as celebrity cameos by Rosario Dawson, LeBron James, Tina Fey, Will Ferrell, Craig Ferguson, and Robin Williams. This version starts with the extravaganza portion, and there are various lines that version 1 does not have. In recent runs, the credits are shown at the ending, along with the normal logo combo at the bottom-right corner.
    • Version 3: The extended version of the episode, which lasts for 59 minutes. It was released on the DVD based on this episode, Season 6 Volume 1, The Complete Sixth Season, and The Next 100 Episodes DVDs. It is a combination of versions 1 and 2, and it also contains extended material that is not found in either version. The extended version includes a cameo by Triumph the Insult Comic Dog, a short cameo by Eddie Deezen, a scene with Robin Williams in the bathroom, and an extended epilogue, where the narrator compares Patchy to Blackbeard the Pirate.
  • This special would be only 32 minutes long without the Patchy segments.
  • This is the longest episode of the series, lasting 59 minutes.
    • As such, this episode holds the record for the most amount of characters.
    • It also holds the record for the most amount of APM tracks used.
    • It is also why this episode takes up two production numbers.
  • In the Brazilian version, this episode is called "Bob Esponja entrando numa fria," which translates to "SpongeBob entering a cold." The explanation for this is that "Fria" (Cold) is a Brazilian slang that means "go wrong."
  • The flashbacks have some similarities to the cutaways shown in other television shows.
  • The Krusty Krab was founded in 1892, because 117 years before 2009 would be that year.
  • This is one of the only episodes in which Mr. Krabs correctly calls Squidward by his first name. Most of the time, he typically calls him "Mr. Squidward."
  • In the flashback of SpongeBob coming to Bikini Bottom, the pineapple, when it is in the water, it does not have its cartoon leaves.
  • In the fake wedding scene, Pearl wears the same dress that she wears at her prom in "The Chaperone" and at her birthday party in "Whale of a Birthday."
  • When Plankton mentions "four score and forty fortnights" of failure, this means it has been about 81.5 years since he started trying to get the formula.
  • One of the flashbacks was reused from "Christmas Who?" when Patchy hangs ornaments; therefore this special is before "Christmas Who?"
  • Mr. Krabs says that Krabby Patties were only a dime in the old days because that was before inflation.
  • The book The Great Escape, which is based on this special, was released about two months before this special premiered.
  • In late 2009, Burger King had tie-ins with this special and released a toy line of the show's main characters in block shapes.[3]
  • In the casting room, a framed cell from "SB-129" can be seen on a wall. The cell is from the scene where Squidward is relaxing in Nowhere.
  • This was the last SpongeBob TV movie to air during Stephen Hillenburg's lifetime.
  • There is a spiritual sequel to the special called "SpongeBob's Big Birthday Blowout," which premiered on July 12, 2019 for the 20th anniversary.
  • The original trailer for the episode in the United States, written by Erica Ottenberg and edited by Brian Johnson, was the winner of a 2010 silver PromaxBDA Promotion and Marketing award.[4]

Cultural references

  • The title is a spoof to the game "Truth or Dare."
  • The scene where Patchy shows the really old clip of SpongeBob is a reference to a lot cartoons from the 1920s and 1930s, mainly Disney cartoons from that era, such as Mickey Mouse.
  • In the extended version, there are some pop culture references said when Robin Williams and Patchy the Pirate are walking to the Green Room.
    • After getting introduced to Patchy the Pirate, Robin Williams says "There isn't someone dressed up as Popeye is there?"
    • At one point, Robin Williams says, "This is like a shot from The Raging Bull."
    • Robin Williams also mentions the 1991 film Hook when he's in the bathroom.
  • We've Got Scurvy briefly makes a reference to P!nk's hit "Get the Party Started."
  • Oh, Krusty Krab is a parody of the song "Oh, Christmas Tree."

Errors

SpongeBob truth or square error

SpongeBob's invisible pants

  • At the beginning, when SpongeBob leaves his house after singing, he bumps into Harold, who is in a line going all the way to the Krusty Krab. SpongeBob declares he cannot be late and jumps on the fishes' heads. If one were to listen and watch closely, they can hear that the men fish have women voices and the women fish have men's voices.
  • When SpongeBob leaves his house in Patchy's dream, the right side of his pants is not filled in.
  • When Sandy is in her wedding dress, the patch of tan fur on her torso does not extend to above her breasts, as it normally does.
  • When Plankton falls down an air duct and lands in the one that SpongeBob, Patrick, Mr. Krabs, and Squidward are in their last scene in the duct system, that duct is underground, but later in the episode, when Mr. Krabs throws his wallet out through the peephole, and when they escape, the duct is above the ground.
  • When SpongeBob's house comes to life in the 30s-style segment, the chimney disappears.
  • When Squidward points out that Patrick left his TV on, the latter's mouth is red for a couple of seconds. When he replies to Squidward with "Well, duh! I don't wanna miss my shows," his mouth is black again.
  • During the wedding play, when Sandy walks by an anchovy, said anchovy's eyes are gone.
  • When SpongeBob gets to lead Patrick and Squidward down the air vent, in the zoom-in he wears sock guarders. When it pops out of the zoom, they are gone.
  • In the room of cameras, some cameras would be highly visible to people, such as the camera in Sandy's bathroom.
  • The alarm clocks towards the beginning says that it is 5 P.M.
  • At one point, Mr. Krabs and the rest split up, but after SpongeBob tells Plankton about the first time Krabs told him the Krabby Patty secret formula, Mr. Krabs appears out of nowhere.
  • In the surveillance room, what is on the TVs changes from shot to shot.
    • The size of the TVs also change, as well as what tubes are connected to what TVs.
  • When SpongeBob, Patrick, Squidward, and Mr. Krabs enter the surveillance room, there is a chair, but when they look at the TV with them on it and also when they look at the camera men, the chair is gone.
  • In some airings, "P!nk" is spelled as "Pink," without the exclamation point.
  • If one looks closely, they can see that at the beginning when Patchy is outside of Nickelodeon Studios, because of the wind, his beard starts to peel off.
  • If one slows down the audio, they can tell that the shot heard before SpongeBob hops on the fishes' heads to get to his work goes off before he finishes talking.
  • When SpongeBob, Mr. Krabs, Patrick, and Squidward enter the surveillance room, the order is Mr. Krabs, SpongeBob, Patrick, and Squidward. However, in the scene prior, it is Mr. Krabs, SpongeBob, Squidward, and Patrick.
  • In the surveillance room, SpongeBob, Mr. Krabs, Patrick, and Squidward are looking at themselves looking at themselves. However, the pattern only stops with a screen inside a screen. The screen inside the screen inside the screen shows nothing.
  • When Robin Williams says that he is alright after Patchy checks on him for the second time, he calls him "Patchy," not "Pagey."
  • When Patchy yells "What?! What do you mean he is not coming!," his hook is on his left hand, but when he leaves the studio, it is on his right hand.
  • When SpongeBob bounces on two female fish, they have male voices.
  • When SpongeBob bounces on Fred, he has a female voice.
  • In the newer Belgian airings, the first part of the episode is aired in the 2:1 aspect ratio, instead of being in 16:9.
  • In the French dub, the Krusty Krab is celebrating its 1107th anniversary instead of 117th.
  • In the Filipino translation, the Krusty Krab is celebrating its 107th anniversary instead of 117th.
    • But still, the designs SpongeBob made says "eleventy-seventh" or 117th.
  • If one looks closely, the transition from starting credits to the episode, the wipe is from left to right instead of down to up.
  • In the flashback of the time SpongeBob first visited the Krusty Krab, SpongeBob's mother is pregnant with SpongeBob, but in "Your Shoe's Untied," SpongeBob is shown to have been in an egg before he was born.
  • When SpongeBob sings "Oh Krusty Krab," the path to the Chum Bucket is there, but in the scene at the end, it is not there anymore.
  • On the November 2, 2018 airing, it had split screen credits, and the credits are from "Help Wanted"/"Reef Blower"/"Tea at the Treedome."[citation needed]
