2020 (MMXX) was a leap year starting on Wednesday of the Gregorian calendar. This year, The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run was originally to release in theaters, but it was moved to Paramount+ in 2021 due to the COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic. "Escape from Beneath Glove World" is the only episode for this year to get over a million U.S. viewers, and this is the second year that new episodes premiered after Stephen Hillenburg's lifetime. When "Who R Zoo?" premiered its partner episode "Kwarantined Krab," didn't air for two years and four months until April 29, 2022. "Boss for a Day" and "Pineapple RV" are the only episodes to premiere in the summer of 2020. This year, only 13 episodes premiered, making it tied with 2005 and 2021 in terms of numbers of new episodes.

2020 had also started season 13, and "A Place for Pets" and "Lockdown for Love" are the only episodes to premiere this year that are from season 13.
