2017 (MMXVII) was a common year that started on Sunday of the Gregorian calendar.

This year saw the beginning of the eleventh season and the conclusions of the ninth and tenth seasons. With 38 new episodes, this year is currently tied with 2011 for the second highest number of new episodes in a single year. 2007 currently holds that record, since 47 episodes premiered that year. So far this is the only year to have a conclusion of two seasons instead of one.

2017 was also the year that Stephen Hillenburg was diagnosed with ALS, leading to his later death on November 26, 2018.

"Goodbye, Krabby Patty?" is the only season 9 episode to premiere in this year. "Sportz?" is the only season 10 episode to premiere in the summer of 2017.
