2000 (MM) was a leap year of the Gregorian calendar that started on a Saturday. This year marked the start of the second season and almost concluded the first season. This will be the second and last time there were episodes in December until 2012, when "It's a SpongeBob Christmas!" premiered. A six-month hiatus happened this year, which lasted from April 1 to October 20. This was also the first year where digital ink-and-paint animation is used in favor of traditional cel animation.
Production-wise, the last several episodes of season 1 were completed early this year though they were mostly in production in 1999. The first half of season 2 ("Your Shoe's Untied" to "Squirrel Jokes") was produced throughout the rest of 2000.
Despite this, "Something Smells," "Bossy Boots," and "Christmas Who?" were the only episodes from season 2 to premiere during this year.
This year was the last year where episodes premiered in the 20th century and 2nd millennium.
This is the first year in which episodes premiered on a leap year.
