Synopsis[]
Patrick starts the show by showcasing his Wheel of Ideas, with all the options now replaced with ice cream. After he spins the wheel, it comes loose and rolls outside the house, running over the lawnies before crashing into next-door neighbor Gladys. Squidina declares that the topic of the day will be neighbors. Patrick makes this an episode of Patrick's Neighborhood, going around the neighborhood and asking questions to the people he meets, including if they have ice cream.
The first house Patrick and Squidina visit is Granny Tentacles'. She excuses herself and runs away with the house, with only the door left behind. Patrick decides they should come back later. The next house they visit appears to be Slappy's, but it is revealed he broke into the house of another neighbor, who soon arrives. Patrick asks him for ice cream, and gets kicked out of the house.
Patrick and Squidina land in front of a snail-shaped house. They interview the "snail lady" owning the house, who is actually a bunch of snails bundled under clothing. Patrick accidentally takes off the disguise, leaving him and Squidina attacked by snails. They run away to a mansion with a guard dog, who turns out to be Cecil in disguise, having gotten a new job.
The next neighbor is Patrick's bedroom door, who has his own pet, wife, kids. The door invites Patrick for dinner, but he declines after noticing they do not have any ice cream. As they leave, they run into Cecil again, who has another job as the house's door.
Afterwards, Patrick and Squidina come across a scary, condemned house. Although Squidina wants to turn back, Patrick is determined to go in because of the show's fans. When they go in, they encounter a variety of people, who express annoyance at the questions Patrick asks and then get pulled into the floor. Patrick grabs onto one just in time and comes across a massive alien in the basement, who had actually been controlling the entire neighborhood with puppets.
Squidina and Patrick are shocked, but Patrick goes to interview the alien. The alien is fed up with Patrick's questions and blasts back off to space, lifting up the entire neighborhood with him. Patrick returns to his family and explains that he learned never to trust his neighbors.
Just then, Bunny calls Patrick in for ice cream, which he is excited to finally have. However, the ice cream cone Patrick gets is yet again Cecil in disguise. Patrick promptly swallows Cecil whole.

Model sheets[]
- Designed by Chris DeRose.[1]
Art[]
Background design[]
- Art direction by Marta Knudsen, layouts by Tim Allen and John Seymore,[7] and traditionally painted by Amy Lewis[8] with line/shadows and lighting digitally painted on top.[3][9]
Storyboards[]
- Rough boarded by Gabe Del Valle[10] and Mike Pelensky,[11][12] plussed by Trey Chavez[13] and other series' storyboard artists.
Production notes[]
Chris DeRose:
- This episode contained some of DeRose's favorite designs on the show.[1]
Gabe Del Valle:
- Del Valle said that this was "A really fun and surreal ep where we get to explore Patrick's neighborhood and meet new and old neighbors![10] We also got to help write a song that had inspired lyrics such as "neighborhood" and "a".[14] And we also get to learn about Slappy's residence and are introduced to the mysterious Snail Lady…"[15]
Mike Pelensky:
- "This ep has some really surreal gags in it, even by Patrick Show standards. But I'm really proud of where they landed and how they escalate. There's a smart way to write 'dumb,' you know!"[11]
- "This episode asks the eternal question: "Won't you be Patrick's neighbor, or would you go nuts first?" This space alien certainly would. Boarding his sarcastic meltdown (on top of all the other bizarre stuff that happens in this ep) was fun as heck!"[12]
Amy Lewis:
- Lewis said that "this show is such a treat to paint for! Its style still shouts 'world of SpongeBob' because of the same shape and design language but has its own unique edge by being painted in watercolour instead of gouache or acrylic like SpongeBob."[9]

Trivia[]
General[]
- This episode's premiere, alongside the other three in its premiere week were simulcasted on Nicktoons.[16] Due to Nicktoons' spacings of commercial breaks, the episode effectively debuted on that network first.
- This episode was originally going to premiere at 5:00pm, but it was moved to 4:00pm.
- Patrick and Squidina doing interviews with other Ukulele Bottom citizens was previously the plot point of "Nitwit Neighborhood News," although in that episode, it was treated as a spoof of evening news broadcasts.
- This episode's title is a reference to the phrase of the same name. At the end of the episode, the title literally happens as the space alien (which held puppets of all of the Stars' neighbors as well their homes) flies away in his ship to live somewhere else.
- This causes Bunny to say the episode's title: "Welp, there goes the neighborhood!"
Episode references[]
- Patrick's "Wheel of Segments" from "Enemies à la Mode" returns, except he has replaced all the topics with ice cream.
- Squidina wears her bike helmet from "Bummer Jobs" while interviewing neighbors with Patrick.
Cultural references[]
- "Patrick's Neighborhood" and its intro is a parody of Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood, and Patrick's suit is the same as Fred Rogers'.
- The bubblegum pencil sticks are a parody of that series' puppets used to represent the citizens of that town, which is fitting, as all of Patrick's neighbors were puppets.
- Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood was also referenced in "Patrick's Alley."
Errors[]
- In the greaser fish's house, the picture of him with Slappy's head pasted over uses Incidental 185's color palette.
