The World's Greatest Valentine is a SpongeBob SquarePants chapter book written by Terry Collins and illustrated by Mike O'Hare. It was published by Simon & Schuster on January 1, 2001 and reprinted on February 18, 2014. The book is based on the episode "Valentine's Day" and is the fourth SpongeBob SquarePants chapter book.

Synopsis[]

It is Valentine's Day in Bikini Bottom and SpongeBob has a special surprise for Patrick. He visits Sandy's treedome, so then he and Sandy go over the plan on how to surprise Patrick. He runs to Patrick's house, and they both head off to the Valentine's Day Carnival.

On the way to the carnival with the chocolate balloon, Sandy is battling a flock of flying clams to ensure the balloon gets to the carnival safely. SpongeBob, worried, tries his best to stall Patrick until his balloon gets there.

On the Ferris wheel, SpongeBob gives him a handshake to calm him. This works for a while, but then Patrick decides to let his anger loose after 3 people came up to SpongeBob thanking him for the gifts he got them, and one of the passersby asked for the time. An enraged Patrick throws the passerby away and goes on a rampage throughout the carnival.

The event ends when Patrick wrangles the passersby at the edge of the pier. Angry at the residents, Patrick plans on hurting SpongeBob and the passersby, but he is interrupted when Sandy comes to the carnival with the balloon in the nick of time. Patrick turns around and is very happy.

Trivia[]

  • This is the first holiday-themed SpongeBob SquarePants book.
  • The original print of this book was published on New Year's Day.

Differences between the book and the episode[]

  • After getting SpongeBob's valentine, Squidward sarcastically says, "Why don't you go play in shark-infested waters?" This is not said in the episode.
  • In the episode, Mrs. Puff doesn't inflate when she crashed into the fire hydrant. In the book, she does.
  • In the book, Plankton assumes the Valentine that SpongeBob gives him is actually a trick set up by Mr. Krabs and says “curse you!” to him. In the episode, SpongeBob and Plankton’s interaction is silent.
  • When guessing what his present is, one of Patrick's guesses is a hot dog that an octopus was eating. This wasn't in the episode.
  • In the book, Incidental 8 is an eel, Incidental 42 is green, and the fish who SpongeBob gave a bike is blue with a yellow dress. In the episode, Incidental 8 is a fish, Incidental 42 is orange, and the fish with a bike is orange with a purple dress.
  • In the book, the scene where Patrick went crazy had more detail, whereas the episode counterpart featured small acts of destruction caused by Patrick.
  • In the illustration of SpongeBob seeing Sandy arriving with the chocolate balloon, the balloon is not patched up unlike the episode.
  • In the book, the crowd "awws" at Patrick hugging the balloon. In the episode, they don't say anything when he does this.
