Video game

The PC version of The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie: The Video Game is a SpongeBob SquarePants video game developed by AWE Games. Much like all the other versions, it is based on the SpongeBob feature film The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie. However, unlike its home console counterpart, it is a point-and-click adventure. A port on Mac was developed by Aspyr.

Plot[]

Gameplay[]

The game consists of 8 chapters that loosely follow the plot of the film, with additional story details being described in cutscenes between chapters that feature narration over still pictures. SpongeBob, Patrick and Plankton and Mindy are playable, depending of the chapter. Plankton is playable on the second chapter, and Mindy is playable in the fourth chapter.

Development[]

General[]

  • If the player presses F12 and types in "AWEGAMES" and then clicks on the ship, a chapter selection screen will appear.
  • Patrick's model has Goofy Goober underpants, but it's always hidden under his shorts. It's possible to see it via bugs and glitches or if the files for Patrick's pants are deleted.
  • There are two unused fonts within the game, both named "tiki."[2]

Reception[]

The PC version of The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie has a 67/100 on review aggregator Metacritic.[3]

Anise Hollingshead of GameZone praised the PC version for its graphics and sound, and wrote, "The humor from the TV show has been translated very well to this computer game, and some of the dialogue is a riot. The characters all have funny things to say, and there are plenty of sight gags, too. Playing as Plankton was a great idea, and kids will love listening to the diminutive evil-ruler wannabe as he comments on the people and things around him." However, Hollingshead – who felt that the game would be best for children who were between the ages of 6 and 10 – wrote that "it's a short game, and because the adventure is the same each time through, there's not much replay value here."[4] Kristen Salvatore of Computer Gaming World felt that the PC version and its puzzles would appeal primarily to young children, but wrote that people expecting to "play" the movie would be disappointed.[5]

Trivia[]

  • This is the fourth licensed SpongeBob video game to be developed by AWE Games, following Operation Krabby Patty, Employee of the Month, and the PC version of Battle for Bikini Bottom.
  • Dennis doesn't appear physically in this version of the game; he only appears in the storybook cutscenes, and he never reappears nor is he mentioned again after getting stepped on by the Cyclops.
  • The menu theme was actually used in another PC game named Age of Sail, a game released by TalonSoft in 1996.
  • The familiar-looking guy (the same one from SpongeBob SquarePants: Employee of the Month) can be seen sitting at a table at the Krusty Krab and Goofy Goober's Ice Cream Party Boat.
  • During the fifth chapter, trying to make SpongeBob traverse the trench too soon causes him to say, "It's too foggy to see! I could get eaten by a Grue." This is a reference to Zork I: The Great Underground Empire, a popular PC text-based adventure game, where if one wandered into a dark location without any light source, the player would be unable to see. Shortly thereafter, the text would pop up saying, "You were eaten by a Grue."
  • Although the game is based on the movie, the Hotel Deep Six (Chapter 5) and Dr. Louie's Office (Chapter 6) never appear in the actual movie.

DVD-ROM.

  • Both the original DVD from 2005 and the 2014 re-release of The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie contain a demo of the PC version of the video game, the demo is exactly the same as the original game, but if you complete the mission in which SpongeBob needs to brush his teeth, a screen which promotes the full version of the game will appear, and after that, the game will close itself.
  • Some of the images shown in the storybook cutscenes for Chapters 7 and 8 were taken from the "Road Trip in 3-D!" book.
  • When Plankton arrives in Neptune's castle, a graffiti can be seen on his left, which says "King Neptune is Baldy, I am not!"
