"The Patterfly Effect" is a The Patrick Star Show episode from season 1. In this episode, Patrick messes with the space-time continuum.

Characters[]

Synopsis[]

Patrick has a multi-layered dream consisting solely of himself sleeping, and recalls it as the greatest dream of his life when he wakes up. He wants to get back to sleep, and takes his head off to rock it to sleep, but this does not work. He tries to hit his head with a hammer to fall unconscious, but he misses and his body runs away. Patrick's body eats breakfast while Squidina puts make-up on his head.

Patrick's head and body reunite, and he tells Squidina that he will not start the show until he relives his dream. Bunny tells Patrick that, as a little girl, she dreamed of being a race car driver -- however, Patrick cuts her off early and thinks she wanted to be a race car. He goes off to make Bunny's "dream" come true.

The Patterfly Effect 093

Young Bunny as a race car.

Patrick enters the time closet to go to Klopnod, 30 years into the past. He meets Bunny as a child and proves that he is her son from the future. He takes her to the speedway and has her race on foot against a car. She fails to beat the car, so Patrick and Bunny train to turn her into a car herself. Bunny wins a race and Patrick decides to return to the present.

In the present day, Patrick finds that he and Squidina now have wheels and treads instead of feet. He learns that after a race car accident, Bunny ended up becoming a street sweeper. He retreats into the time closet and tells child Bunny not to be a race car, interrupting his past self. As Patrick drives away, he runs over a lamppost and causes a fire. In the present day, his legs are back, but the entire house is on fire, with Squidina greeting him while wearing a fireproof suit.

Patrick tries many times to fix the past, but every time, something ends up wrong. He returns to find that the family is normal, except for a mouth on his stomach. Bunny serves him food, but it is dinner instead of breakfast, to Patrick's horror. Patrick tries to go back in time, but the time closet has now become a regular closet in this universe.

The Patterfly Effect 182

Patrick restores the time closet.

Patrick tries to reinvent the time closet by taping a clock to a cardboard box. Squidina laughs at him and says that inventing a real one would require decades of research and education. Patrick heads to college and ends up inventing time travel himself, then re-instating the time closet.

An older Patrick goes back in time and prevents himself from ever using the time closet in the first place. Younger Patrick shrugs it off and says he will do something else instead. Older Patrick asks about breakfast, and younger Patrick says that it was 15 minutes ago. They agree to go back in time 15 minutes for breakfast. However, both of them end up being part of the eggs that Bunny cooks for breakfast.

Production notes[]

Dylan Bozic:

  • Bozic said that he "had the pleasure of co-boarding it with the crazy talented Andy Gonsalves and Brett Varon and his team did an amazing job polishing it up." Bozic said that fans "won't want to miss what we've been cooking up this season!"[10]

Andy Gonsalves:

  • Being Gonsalves' first episode, he "co-wrote and storyboarded "The Patterfly Effect" with Dylan Bozic based on a GREAT outline by Jacob Fleisher. [Their] boards were then turned into eye candy under the supervision of Brett Varon."[2]

Arielle Phillips:

  • Phillips said that the episode was "directed by my fellow awesome Looney alumni Andy Gonsalves and supervised by the uber talented Brett Varon!"[15]
  • This was the first time Phillips had drawn Patrick in 4 years at that point, with the last episode she worked on being "SpongeBob's Bad Habit."[16]
  • While plussing a scene featuring Patrick in an angry pose, she decided to keep it the way it was done in the rough storyboards, as "it made [her] giggle."[17]
