The Patrick Star Show is a SpongeBob SquarePants spin-off series that focuses on SpongeBob's best friend, Patrick.[1] It was developed by Luke Brookshier, Marc Ceccarelli, Andrew Goodman, Kaz, Doug Lawrence, and Vincent Waller.
The series features Patrick Star hosting his own late-night talk show, mainly including him and his family, but other SpongeBob characters still make occasional appearances. It also introduces several new characters.[2][3]
The pitch bible was created on March 7, 2020.[4]
Voice-overs for the project started in August of 2020.[1][5] It was expected to receive 13 episodes[1] with mostly the same time structures as the main series[6] and comes from the same crew as the current staff of the main series.
The series is currently in its third season, which premiered on July 29, 2024, and it is confirmed to have 13 half-hour episodes.[7]
On October 18, 2024, the show was renewed for two more seasons, each consisting of 13 episodes.[8]
Premise[]
The series centers around Patrick as he hosts his own talk show from his family home. His sister, Squidina, helps him run the show and is far more competent than him. His parents and grandfather are too clueless to help out most of the time, but their shenanigans often end up impacting Patrick's show.
Characters[]
Main[]
The spin-off's main characters are the members of the Star family: Patrick, his sister Squidina, his parents Bunny and Cecil, and his grandfather GrandPat.
Other[]
Ouchie, Tinkle, and Pinkeye, three pets belonging to the Star family, appear as recurring characters. The incidental characters are the same as the main series. Most characters have no adjustments to their designs, but several characters are changed to look younger.
Returning characters[]
Various characters from SpongeBob SquarePants make cameo appearances, such as all of the main characters. Unlike the main series and Kamp Koral, SpongeBob himself is absent in many episodes of The Patrick Star Show.

Trivia[]
- Squidina was first created for the original SpongeBob series. She appeared in "Goons on the Moon" as a friend of Pearl, and later returned in "The Goofy Newbie." After the latter episode, Vincent Waller stated, "You have not seen the last of Squidina. We have special plans for her. I can't say when you'll see her again, but you will!"[9] Later, The Patrick Star Show was announced[1] and eventually revealed to feature Squidina Star.[2][3]
- After The Adventures of Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius and its spin-off Planet Sheen, SpongeBob SquarePants and its spin-off The Patrick Star Show are the second pair of Nicktoons where the spin-off focuses on the titular character's best friend.
- The former ended before its spin-off Planet Sheen began, unlike SpongeBob SquarePants and its concurrent spin-offs Kamp Koral: SpongeBob's Under Years and The Patrick Star Show.[10]
- It is most likely because Planet Sheen may be a sequel to The Adventures of Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius.
- Also, the title character Jimmy Neutron is not seen on-screen in Planet Sheen, instead, he was only mentioned, unlike SpongeBob in both spin-offs Kamp Koral: SpongeBob's Under Years and The Patrick Star Show.
- The former ended before its spin-off Planet Sheen began, unlike SpongeBob SquarePants and its concurrent spin-offs Kamp Koral: SpongeBob's Under Years and The Patrick Star Show.[10]
- The concept of a character hosting a talk show is similar to Squidward Chat and Snark Chat with Bubble Bass.
- This is the second Patrick-focused show, with the first being the web series All About Patrick/The Patrick Sitcom Show.
- This is the second spin-off of the series, with the first being Kamp Koral: SpongeBob's Under Years.
- Although this spin-off is focusing on Patrick and his family, Sam is not there; she was lost from sometime when she and Patrick were kids[11] until "Big Sister Sam," with this spin-off being a prequel that appears to be set between their separation and reunion. Also in "Something Smells," Patrick says he doesn't have a sister.
- According to Vincent Waller, they were considering adding Sam to The Patrick Star Show, but she did not appear at the start of the series, with Squidina Star instead taking her place as Patrick's sister.[12]
- Sam would later appear, albeit as a background character, in the episodes "Klopnodian Heritage Festival" and "Tying the Klop-Knot."
- In the original show, Patrick has parents named Margie and Herb. In the spin-off, they have different appearances and are named Bunny and Cecil.
- When asked on why Patrick's parents look different in the spin-off, showrunner Vincent Waller responded: "We felt the original iterations of the characters, while they worked for that episode, they were boring as characters. They were NOT entertaining or fun. These two are so much more fun."[13]
- Ian Vazquez clarified: "As someone who's on the show I can say they're officially just a redesign of the old parents (his dad even still has the same voice) into...stars!"[14]
- In an interview with Variety, Waller and Marc Ceccarelli said that they intentionally deviated from SpongeBob canon to allow for more creative freedom. "We see it like a jar sitting up on a shelf in the corner with a label that says canon on it, and we recognize that, but we also treat every episode like a standalone that can go anywhere in the universe," explained Waller. The pair also acknowledged that the move would not sit well with some of SpongeBob's ardent fans.[17]
- The show started development during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.[18]
- This is Squidasaurus Rex's first appearance following The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water and its video game SpongeBob HeroPants.
- Similarly to The Ren & Stimpy Show, which Vincent Waller also worked for, this show includes fake commercials in the episodes.
- Promos for the series on Nickelodeon include a cover of the David Bowie song "Starman"- Bowie had previously appeared in "Atlantis SquarePantis" and had one of his songs used in the SpongeBob musical.
- The first episode, "Late for Breakfast", was uploaded by the SpongeBob SquarePants Official YouTube channel on July 13, 2021.[19]
- This series was referenced in "Friendiversary" in SpongeBob's memory book.
- As well as that, a episode from this series ("Bummer Jobs") was seen flickering on SpongeBob's eyes when SpongeBob remembers Squidward.
- Promotional art for this series was used in "Ride Patrick Ride."
- Patrick's outfit in the series was buyable in Nickverse.
- Since "Something Stupid This Way Comes", Stephen Hillenburg is now credited as the creator as the series.
