Story[]
Steam description[]
SpongeBob and Patrick meet the mysterious fortune teller Madame Kassandra who gives them a vial full of Mermaid's Tears. Legend claims they grant the wishes of those who are pure of heart.
Naturally, the two best buddies get overexcited and their flurry of wishes tears open the very fabric of space and time. All while releasing Cosmic Jelly onto Bikini Bottom and opening portals to strange Wishworlds in the process.
Now it's up to our heroes to rescue their friends who got lost in the Wishworlds and bring back Bikini Bottom's most iconic buildings.
But Madame Kassandra has her own devious plan.[16]
Plot[]
One day, SpongeBob wakes up, excited to go to Glove World!, before he skips over to Patrick's house to wake Patrick up. Patrick, however, isn't ready yet, before he goes to Sandy's treedome, to help out Sandy with the scattered tikis. After that, Patrick is ready and the two head off for Glove World. Two hours later, SpongeBob spots a group of cool kids and tries to fit in with them, before they walk off, much to his chagrin. That's when a mysterious wagon appears out of nowhere, and SpongeBob begins scrounging through its junk, before setting his eyes upon a mysterious potion. Then the shopkeeper, who introduces herself as Madame Kassandra, explains the purpose of the item, that being called, magic bubble soap, and how it grants those wishes to the current user.
SpongeBob then takes it home and he and Patrick use it create unique bubbles for their friends, which eventually draws a cheering crowd. Patrick then starts to get suspicious and reads the labels to SpongeBob, about it belonging to King Neptune, and how mortals should not use it carelessly. That is when a portal starts to suck up everything from Bikini Bottom, including its residents, and then sets out to rescue them and restore Bikini Bottom. Meanwhile, Patrick is turned into a balloon.
After adventuring through the destroyed Bikini Bottom, the two eventually stumble upon Madame Kassandra again, and explain their situation about overusing the magic bubble soap. Madame Kassandra then goes onto explain the jelly, known as cosmic jelly, which allows them to travel through different wishworlds, that their friends have been scattered across. She then gives SpongeBob a costume to match the theme of that specific Wishworld and the magic bubble wand to return them home, before SpongeBob and Patrick head off to save Bikini Bottom, unaware about Madame Kassandra's true intentions.
They go into Wild West Jellyfish Fields to get Mr. Krabs, Sandy, and a part of her dome in Karate Downtown Bikini Bottom, then Larry, the anchovies, Fred, and SpongeBob's pineapple from Prawn in Pirate Goo Lagoon, then Patrick's rock and Gary in Halloween Rock Bottom, then Squidward from Pom Pom (a prehistoric version of Pearl) in the Prehistoric Kelp Forest, and Pearl in the Medieval Sulfur Fields, as well as a part of the Krusty Krab along with Patrick from Jelly Glove World.
Afterwards, SpongeBob and Patrick are able to give Madame Kassandra the Cosmic Jelly, before King Neptune teleports in and berates SpongeBob for trusting her. He then goes on to further explain her plans to take over the Seven Seas, and how she stole his magic bubble soap, before Madame Kassandra traps King Neptune with the jelly. Squidward then interrupts and then lashes out at SpongeBob for the trouble he caused, before Madame Kassandra sees an opportunity to transform Squidward into her minion.
Here, SpongeBob and Patrick are then teleported into the middle of a wormhole, where they must face off against Madame Kassandra and free Squidward from her grasp. She is eventually defeated and sucked into a portal, as King Neptune becomes freed from the jelly, Squidward turns back to normal, and Patrick starts to deflate and fly straight into the sky. As a reward for saving Bikini Bottom and defeating Madame Kassandra, King Neptune allows SpongeBob to make one wish with his magic bubble soap. However, that is when Patrick lands after transforming back to normal, and inadvertently wastes the wish on doing the entire journey again, much to the other three's horror. The bubble then floats up high in the sky, and pops, thus granting Patrick's inadvertent wish and ending the game.
Gameplay[]
Conceptualized as the spiritual successor to Battle for Bikini Bottom, this game plays very similarly to its predecessor while also introducing new gameplay mechanics and characters. The main goal of the game is to save SpongeBob's friends and restore some Bikini Bottom buildings including the Krusty Krab, Patrick's rock and SpongeBob's own pineapple. Along the level, players need to collect cosmic jellies to unlock costumes and golden doubloons to level up your tier which unlocks more costumes. In addition to 3D platforming, this game also introduces new mechanics like driving sequences and mini-games. While retaining its open-world design like the predecessor, the level progression is much more linear. After completing the main missions, players may need to backtrack to complete the sub missions given by characters in the hub world and play some challenges that are only available after unlocking the corresponding move to get more golden doubloons.
Characters[]
- means the character.
- means the alternate universe counterpart of the character.
Good/neutral characters[]
- SpongeBob: the main protagonist and the only playable character. After causing the cosmic chaos, SpongeBob must travel to several wishworlds to save his friends and restore Bikini Bottom buildings while collecting cosmic jellies for the mysterious fortune teller Madame Kassandra. Some of SpongeBob's moves are based on his moves from Battle for Bikini Bottom, while other moves are completely new or adapted from other characters in another games.
- Patrick: the deuteragonist and SpongeBob's best friend. Due to the misuse of the Mermaid Tears, Patrick turned into a balloon who hovers and teleports around SpongeBob. Most of the time, Patrick only chit-chats with SpongeBob but he can be useful to bring additional underwear when SpongeBob is in low health or guide the player on the objectives.
- Squidward: SpongeBob's neighbor who got lost in the Prehistoric Kelp Forest and turned into Squog. When returned to Bikini Bottom, he still speaks caveman and keeps coughing. SpongeBob must find refreshment to clear his throat.
- Jeff Tentacles Jr.: a wild west variant who works as a cemetery worker. During the burial of Billy the Bass, he was interrupted by the cosmic jellies. SpongeBob must save him and clear the cemetery before the mourners arrive.
- Squid Van Hammerschmidt: a karate variant who works as a director in a movie set. At first he wasn't amazed with SpongeBob as the main character. However, he later praises him after seeing his incredible performance. He is shown to have little care for his crew, as he used the movie crew for a whacking scene and had no safety precautions during the chase scene.
- Squidnote: a medieval variant who is the jester of the kingdom. He was tasked to find a musician for Princess Pearl's party. He is similar to his original counterpart in that he is not amazed with SpongeBob and has bad music taste.
- Mr. Krabs: SpongeBob's boss and the owner of the Krusty Krab who got sucked into Wild West Jellyfish Fields and turned into the Red-Handed Bandit. Once rescued, he demands that SpongeBob find his lost pennies.
- Pinzarossa: a pirate variant who lost his treasure, and demands that SpongeBob and Patrick find it. His appearance is similar to the pirates from the colonial era.
- Sandy: SpongeBob's friend who turned into Karate Sandy in Karate Downtown Bikini Bottom. After rescuing her, she asks SpongeBob to find some hot objects for her treedome's heater.
- Sheriff Sandy: a wild west variant who loves cactus juice. She was tasked to hunt the Red-Handed Bandit after his takeover caused a shortage of cactus juice.
- Candy: a Halloween variant who looks like a ninja. She owns a shadow theatre that shows a Hash-slinging slasher silhouette. SpongeBob was asked to help her by solving the puzzle. She then leads the duo to the museum while sending them off before the next group of viewers arrive.
- Mrs. Puff: SpongeBob's driving teacher. She lost the good noodle stars due to the jellies, so SpongeBob must find them. She also appears in Wild West Jellyfish Fields as the riding instructor for Mrs. Puff's Riding Ranch.
- Mrs. Fluff: a Halloween variant who works on a snail race's committee. She demands SpongeBob five chocolate candies as the entry fee. Later on, she transforms SpongeBob into a snail in order for him to participate.
- Pearl: Mr. Krabs' daughter who got sucked into Medieval Sulfur Fields and became a princess there. Later in the level, she asks SpongeBob to help serve her slumber party's guests.
- Director's Assistant: a karate variant who works as Squid Van Hammerschmidt's assistant director on her first day. She guides SpongeBob around the movie set to meet with Hammerschmidt.
- Pom Pom: the prehistoric counterpart of Pearl. Squidward was captured by her.
- Plankton: Mr. Krabs' rival and the co-owner of the Chum Bucket alongside Karen. Unlike other video game appearances, he doesn't have an antagonistic role. He somehow didn't get sucked into any wishworld.
- Karen: Plankton's computer wife. Like Plankton, she also survived the Cosmic Shake.
- Gary: SpongeBob's pet snail. He was sucked into Halloween Rock Bottom and grows to gigantic size due to the sugar rush. Upon returning to Bikini Bottom, he is still giant in size, so SpongeBob must find a shrinking potion for him.
- Spot: Plankton and Karen's pet amoeba, who appears hidden in each level.
- King Neptune: the ruler of the ocean, who is trapped by Kassandra with the jelly.
- Larry the Lobster: Goo Lagoon's lifeguard who got lost in Pirate Goo Lagoon. He was forced to join Admiral Prawn's crew.
- Flying Dutchman: a ghost that lost his ship due to being stolen by Admiral Prawn. He later appears in Halloween Rock Bottom requesting SpongeBob to stop his imposters.
- Mermaid Teenagers: Three of the mermaids appear in Pirate Goo Lagoon.
Enemies[]
- Jellyfish: Jellyfish roam many areas in the sea and can be very aggressive if provoked. They attack the player by stinging the player and are very slow, which gives one the strategy to quickly attack them before they zap the player. They are also seen in Battle for Bikini Bottom.
- Jelly: the main enemies in the game. They try to hit SpongeBob using bones or melon in a fork. They are similar to Fodder from Battle for Bikini Bottom
- Tartar Jelly: a jelly that shoots tartar sauce. This enemy needs to be hit twice to defeat it. They are the same as Tar-Tar from Battle for Bikini Bottom.
- Jelly Maker: This huge jelly that looks like The Appetizer spawns other jellies until it is destroyed. The jelly has three health points and every time it gets hit, it emits a shockwave that stuns SpongeBob. This jelly is similar to Duplicatotron 1000s from Battle for Bikini Bottom.
- Big Jelly: a muscular jelly that uses a bathtub as his weapon. This enemy has two attacks, slamming and spinning the bathtub. Big jellies have three health points and cannot be hit unless exhausted. Their slamming attack is similar to Ham-Mers while the spinning attack is similar to G-Love from Battle for Bikini Bottom.
- Ninjelly: a small jelly that wears a headband. This jelly will charge at SpongeBob quickly. They are immune to SpongeBob's spin attack, so the only way to defeat them is when they get dizzy either by karate kick or crashing into the wall.
- Slamvil: a small box-like jelly that tries to slam the player like an anvil, hence the name. Due to their flying nature, SpongeBob can only hit them when they hit the ground or stun them with bubble button. In sliding sequences, they will chase SpongeBob and drop some Stone Tikis to hurt him.
- Baby Boom: a jelly that wears a swim ring, rides a unicycle and has two health points. They have two attacks, the regular attack which is throwing explosive balls and a close range attack which is hitting SpongeBob with their candy. They are similar to Chuck from Battle for Bikini Bottom except they are on the ground and the balls fly towards SpongeBob rather than simply in an arc.
- Spooky Jelly: an angler-fish jelly that roams in the darkness. SpongeBob must avoid getting spotted or he will get frozen. They cannot be defeated with traditional attacks, so SpongeBob must scare them. They are somewhat similar to Sleepy-Time from Battle for Bikini Bottom.
- Boxing Jelly: a blob jelly with two faces; each face has a boxing glove. When hit, they are split into two smaller blobs which can slow SpongeBob's movements by attaching to him or regroup to become a boxing jelly again.
- Burrower: a huge worm jelly that has three health points and consists of a shopping cart, a street light, an antenna, two baby hands and other things. They hide in the ground and appear below SpongeBob. In order to defeat them, they must be lured with the Grand Slam and hit when on the surface. They are somewhat similar to Arf from Battle for Bikini Bottom but instead of cowering away, these enemies try to chase SpongeBob and appear below his feet.
- Squid Jelly: a huge jelly that looks like a squid. This jelly has two attacks, shooting a rain of projectiles toward SpongeBob and blowing explosive projectiles. Because they can only be defeated by reef blower, they only appear in reef blower challenges.

Bosses[]
Fought indirectly[]
- Karate Sandy (Karate Downtown Bikini Bottom) - The end boss in Karate Downtown Bikini Bottom. She is encountered in her treedome and works as an actress for Squid Van Hammerschmidt, where she then battles SpongeBob in her wheel and with several bodyguards and jelly minions. When she rolls her wheel into several barrels of TNT, SpongeBob must use his Karate Kick to damage her.
- King Gary (Halloween Rock Bottom) - The end boss in Halloween Rock Bottom. After eating so much candy, Gary has grown huge and dons the title of King Gary, and is encountered in the museum. In his boss battle, he will use several snails at his disposal, and will spit many slimeballs at SpongeBob, alike Robo-Patrick's industrial waste belch from Battle for Bikini Bottom. Gary will also use a glare attack that SpongeBob must avoid by hiding behind any objects. SpongeBob cannot battle him indirectly, but the way Gary can be defeated, is if the three kandy machines around the museum are destroyed, thus cutting off his supply.
- After defeating him, and transporting him back to Bikini Bottom, Gary will still remain large in his king form, and remain hostile by still belching slimeballs at SpongeBob if he approaches him. However, a side quest can be received from Twitchy the Witchy to create a potion that turns him back to normal. Once done so, Gary transforms back to normal, granting SpongeBob one golden doubloon.
- Pom Pom (Prehistoric Kelp Forest) - The end boss in Prehistoric Kelp Forest and the prehistoric counterpart of Pearl. Once SpongeBob and Patrick travel into that specific Wishworld, they find out that Squidward has been captured by her. Once they travel to the arena that she is in, she will battle them, primary using her crying and shockwaves of lava as an attack. The main way to take away her health is to first destroy the vines that hold a bone chandelier above her platform, and then destroy the bones that hold that platform.
- Glovey Glove (Jelly Glove World) - The end boss in Jelly Glove World and the game's secondary antagonist.
- After SpongeBob and Patrick causes chaos throughout Bikini Bottom, this act has caused Glovey to lose his visitors, and thus goes insane for revenge. When the two finally travel to Glove World again however, Glovey holds Patrick hostage at the Krusty Krab, which he took as well, and tries to stop SpongeBob from reaching the end. Throughout SpongeBob's journey, he is heard over the megaphone, taunting him, and states that Patrick will never reunite with him. Eventually, SpongeBob makes it to the Krusty Krab and battles Glovey Glove. Here, Glovey summons several jelly minions to attack SpongeBob, before the latter gets an upper hand by shooting jelly back at him with a reef blower. After three hits, Glovey starts to realize the error of his ways and thus becomes depressed, before SpongeBob is able to cheer him up with pictures of his fans. Afterwards, Glovey Glove allows Patrick and the Krusty Krab to be free, and lets SpongeBob take them back to Bikini Bottom.
- Madame Kassandra[17] (Final Boss) - The final boss (alongside Jelly Squidward) and main antagonist of the game.
- She first is seen teleporting her wagon into Glove World after SpongeBob becomes saddened about not being cool, before finding her stolen bottle of magic bubble soap. She then lets SpongeBob take it, and after they cause Bikini Bottom to go into complete chaos, she helps him and Patrick by gifting them the magic bubble wand and a costume to match each Wishworld they visit. Eventually, her true colors start to shine through, and it is only when SpongeBob manages to give her the cosmic jelly she needed, after completing Jelly Glove World, that King Neptune teleports in and warns SpongeBob about her plans to take over the Seven Seas. She then traps Neptune with the Jelly, right before transforming Squidward into a jelly monster to duke it out with SpongeBob and Patrick in the middle of a wormhole.
- In the battle she summons a bunch of jelly minions to attack SpongeBob and Patrick, as she floats around Jelly Squidward. Once SpongeBob gets a reef blower and sucks up enough jelly minions, he can shoot a glob back at her. This process is then repeated two more times, before she is defeated. After her defeat, Kassandra is sucked and sealed away in a portal, leaving her fate unknown in the post-game.
- Jelly Squidward - The final boss (alongside Madame Kassandra) of the game. After being transformed by Madame Kassandra, he is used to battle against SpongeBob and Patrick, where he will use his tentacles to slam the ground and create shockwaves. After Madame Kassandra's defeat, Jelly Squidward transforms back to normal.
Opposing forces[]
- Red-handed Bandit Krabs (Wild West Jellyfish Fields) - The end obstacle in Wild West Jellyfish Fields. After being teleported into the Wishworld, Mr. Krabs becomes a well known thief, called The Red-Handed Bandit, raiding cactus farms for their juice. After SpongeBob meets the sheriff of the town and defeats some jelly minions, Mr. Krabs disguises himself, and tricks SpongeBob into going on a quest to fetch him cactus juice. After exiting the mines of that Wishworld, they spot Mr. Krabs on a passing train and soon realize that he was the bandit everyone was talking about.
- His end mission includes SpongeBob having to ride a seahorse to catch up to the train, while Mr. Krabs throws barrels at him. After getting onto the train, he must defeat a series of enemies in each car, or go through an obstacle course, until they reach the head of the train. Afterwards, the sheriff apprehends Mr. Krabs, before SpongeBob calls to take him back to Bikini Bottom.
- Admiral Prawn (Pirate Goo Lagoon) - The end obstacle in Pirate Goo Lagoon. During the events of the game, he stole both the Flying Dutchman's ship, along with SpongeBob's house, prompting SpongeBob to go after the ship to defeat him. After SpongeBob makes it onto the ship, Admiral Prawn summons many waves jelly minions to defeat SpongeBob, and prevent him from taking back the ship. When SpongeBob fires off the cannon to shoot fireworks, this startles Admiral Prawn and he is captured by the Flying Dutchman.
- Twitchy the Witchy (Medieval Sulfur Fields) - The end obstacle in Medieval Sulfur Fields. Despite being an obstacle at the end of the Wishworld, she also assists SpongeBob and Patrick in their quest to fix the magic bubble wand, after they accidentally broke it. In order to fix the wand, she requests SpongeBob to fetch her some Wrinkly's Pro-Aging Cream that was lost during its shipment. After they retrieve the cream, Twitchy fixes the wand as requested. During Princess Pearl's challenge to serve all the patrons cake, Twitchy breaks into the castle and opposes SpongeBob, from serving anybody cake
- In an extra quest to transform Gary back to normal, SpongeBob and Patrick travel back to the Medieval Sulfur Fields to talk to Twitchy again to create a potion to cure him. Twitchy then tells them to find seven scattered ingredients around the Wishworld. The two eventually find all the needed ingredients and Twitchy creates the potion.

Abilities[]
- Basic Moves
- Spin: SpongeBob's basic attack, reused from Battle for Bikini Bottom, The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie video game, and Battle for Bikini Bottom: Rehydrated, where he swings a Bubble Wand around him to hit any enemies or obstacles. If another costume is equipped, then the visual for the Spin will change. (e.g.: Karate Gloves for KarateBob and RoboBob SteelPants, and a shield for Knight).
- Ground Pound: SpongeBob's secondary attack, where while in midair, he will slam onto enemies, tikis, or buttons. While this move is basically the Bubble Bounce from Battle for Bikini Bottom and Battle for Bikini Bottom: Rehydrated, SpongeBob's Ground Pound seems to be more like the one he does in Revenge of the Flying Dutchman and Plankton's Robotic Revenge.
- Glide: While airborne, SpongeBob can glide using the pizza box to reach some far areas. This is basically Sandy's lasso glide from Battle for Bikini Bottom but unlike her, SpongeBob can still glide even when the player releases the glide button and then presses it again as long as the gauge doesn't run out.
- Dodge: SpongeBob can perform a cartwheel to evade enemies. This was adapted from Patrick's move from The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie video game.
- Bubble Button: SpongeBob can shoot bubbles to activate buttons, inflate some platforms, destroy tikis in the distance and trap small enemies to stun them. This move replaces Bubble Bowl from Battle for Bikini Bottom.
- Bubble Surf: A move where SpongeBob can glide through the air by jumping on a bubble surfboard to cover long distances. After doing so, he can extend the amount of time he can glide by running into more surfboards. This move is unlocked after completing Wild West Jellyfish Fields.
- Karate Kick: A move where SpongeBob locks onto a target and kicks it. He can use this move to break down certain barriers, cross large gaps by kicking floating targets, and attack enemies. This move is unlocked in Karate Downtown Bikini Bottom.
- Fishhook Swing: SpongeBob can attach ropes onto nearby hooks. This move is based on Sandy's swing from Battle for Bikini Bottom. However, players must hold down the button just like in Rehydrated.
- Sneaking: SpongeBob hides in bushes to evade Spooky Jellies. First appears in Halloween Rock Bottom.
- Boo Scare: SpongeBob can scare Spooky Jellies to defeat them. SpongeBob can only perform this move when the icon appears.
- Grand Slam: the stronger version of Ground Pound. SpongeBob performs this move to lure the Worm Jelly out, hitting the bigger button and destroy special cages. It can also be used to defeat enemies or destroy tikis in some radius. It is unlocked in Prehistoric Kelp Forest.
- Reef Blower: SpongeBob can suck cosmic jellies in to fill the gauge and shoot a deadly purple goo to defeat enemies. It is unlocked in Jelly Glove World.
- Special Sequences
- Seahorse Riding: SpongeBob rides several seahorses (that look like Mystery) to reach some far places or for chase sequences. The seahorse has two moves: they can jump to avoid obstacle and boost to ram several walls. Seahorses can be found in Bikini Bottom, Wild West Jellyfish Fields and Medieval Sulfur Fields.
- Unicycle Riding: SpongeBob rides a unicycle for filming a chase scene. He can only use it to jump to avoid oncoming traffic. It only appears in Karate Downtown Bikini Bottom.
- Slingshot: SpongeBob can use nearby slingshots for fast travelling. This move somewhat replaces Mystery Boxes from Battle for Bikini Bottom. The slingshot becomes available after entering Pirate Goo Lagoon.
- Rolling Rock: SpongeBob can rides a rolling rock to reach some areas.
- The Mitten: A ride that only appears in Jelly Glove World. It can only jump.

The bridges in the Jelly Squidward's boss fight were initially made out of jelly and could be destroyed by Jelly Squidward's shockwaves. They were changed to normal bridges in the day one patch. Initially, portraits of characters would sometimes appears when doing a specific missions (such as the side-scrolling section of Karate Downtown Bikini Bottom). They were intentionally removed in patch 1.03 for unknown reasons.
According to unused voicelines in the files, there originally was a quest where Plankton would appear in each worlds in order to study and research on the jelly ennemies. This supposedly got replaced by the Spot quest instead. There's concept art for a cut enemy called the "Old Smelly Seaman," who would've fired a fish towards SpongeBob. He was likely scrapped very early in development, considering how different he looks compared to the enemies from the final game.
Reception[]
The Cosmic Shake has received "mixed or average reviews" on all platforms according to review aggregator Metacritic. There was a 70/100 on the PlayStation 4 version,[21] a 68/100 on the Xbox One version,[22] a 73/100 on the Nintendo Switch version,[23] and a 71/100 on the PC version.[24]

According to GameSensor, over 60,000 players added The Cosmic Shake to their Steam accounts' wishlist even a month before its release. It sold almost 50,000 units during the first month of release on Steam.[25] The game reached tenth place on the sales chart in the United Kingdom.[26]
In May 2023, Embracer Group (owner of THQ Nordic) stated that initial sales of the game were below expectations, but they expected it to "have a long tail of revenue."[27]
