Patrick and Gary are friends and revealed to be cousins.[1] Also, Gary leaves SpongeBob for Patrick in the episode "Dumped," until it is revealed at the end of the episode that Gary just wanted the cookie in his pocket. Patrick also helps SpongeBob find Gary in "Have You Seen This Snail?," though does not help very much and encounters him at the arts & craft store, but is too dumb to tell SpongeBob.
Patrick also shows care for Gary in "Driven to Tears" when he reminds SpongeBob to feed him due to his occasional forgetfulness. In the The Patrick Star Show episode "Pat-a-thon," Patrick wants to help Gary learn to dance, and hosts a telethon to raise money for him.
Even though their friendship seems nice, Patrick can also be very harmful to Gary. An example is in "Pet Sitter Pat," when he tries to force Gary to take a bath both with a hose and flamethrower, and then uses salt on him. In this episode he also does not bother to feed him. They are both mean to each other in that episode until the end where Gary reads Patrick a bedtime story even after all he has done. In "Yours, Mine and Mine," Patrick removes Gary from his friend list for calling him a "non-sharer" according to SpongeBob, however Gary does not care and SpongeBob realizes it is true.

- In "Rise and Shine," a cartoon cat sound effect is heard while Patrick is getting ready and Patrick mistakes it for Gary.
