Synopsis[]
The episode begins with SpongeBob and Patrick laying in a vegetative state after watching a taped Mermaid Man marathon. Noting how many times they've watched the tape, SpongeBob wishes to go back and see the show when it was brand new. They use Patrick's time closet to travel back in time, although they do not know just how far back. They come across the Super Child Daycare and rush in, where an overworked and nervous director mistakes them for babysitters he hired earlier, gives them supplies, and leaves.
SpongeBob and Patrick walk into the nursery and see the super babies: various heroes and villains from the Mermaid Man series, including Man Ray, the Dirty Bubble, and even Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy. They realize that they went back in time to when the characters themselves were new, not their show. They check the schedule, then go out for calisthenics.
SpongeBob and Patrick lead the babies in toe-touches and jumping jacks. One of the babies, Rubber Bandy, accidentally hits the record player and makes the music go faster. The babies go out of control, and SpongeBob and Patrick struggle to keep up with them, until Mermaid Man destroys the record. SpongeBob nervously announces storytime.
Patrick hands out juice boxes, and SpongeBob decides to read a Mermaid Man comic from the future. He starts by explaining who the "good guys" and "bad guys" are, confusing the babies. In the comic, the villains try to steal cupcakes from a factory, only to be foiled by the heroes. The babies are confused by some of them being deemed "evil" and begin crying. Upset, Patrick wants to lead them in a battle. SpongeBob is hesitant, but Patrick explains that they have superpowers and will not be injured. He takes out the comic for them to re-enact.
Patrick, leading the villains, and SpongeBob, leading the heroes, battle in the nursery. SpongeBob and Patrick watch in amazement, but the commotion of the battle alerts the day care director as he returns. He blows a whistle to make the babies sit quietly, but at this point, the now-villains and heroes still dislike each other. The director gets angry at SpongeBob and Patrick for showing the babies not to get along. He kicks them out, back into the time closet's open door.
In the present day, SpongeBob and Patrick walk out of Near Mint Comic Books with a stack of comics. They realize that their actions in the past led to the Mermaid Man series being created today. However, older versions of all the heroes and villains appear, angry at them being stuck fighting forever rather than working together. SpongeBob and Patrick run away as the superheroes and supervillains chase them into the distance.

Production notes[]
- Ian Vazquez did various last-minute touch-ups, storyboards, and designs for this episode, with his favorite part of that being the comic book segment. He designed characters like Rubber Bandy and Go-Woman from scratch[4] and cleaned up the designs for The Coral Creep and Exo-Woman, who were initially designed by Kenny Pittenger.[6]
- Vazquez made a few color suggestions and notes for the style shift during the warehouse scene, making them inspired by Batman's "The Killing Joke." This was done as he not only thought that it looked nice, but he imagined that this issue was from the 1980s, a time when this show "vaguely sort of would be set."[7]

- The warehouse's color choices were based on the bold original printing colors of the Batman comic, "The Killing Joke."[7]
