Synopsis[]

As the episode opens, Squidward is dreaming he is a great musician. Suddenly, his alarm clock goes off, waking him up. He prepares for another day at the Krusty Krab. While SpongeBob gets ready to go to work, he sees Squidward and asks him why he is playing his clarinet. Squidward says he is practicing for his performance tomorrow. Squidward keeps walking to work while SpongeBob visits Sandy. He finds Sandy with a machine that can transport things. Sandy shows SpongeBob how it works by teleporting an apple to Mrs. Puff's desk. SpongeBob asks Sandy if it can transport him to the Krusty Krab. She allows him to try it. When he gets there, part of Squidward's arm gets stuck in him. Suddenly, the machine's remote control goes haywire and burns out and SpongeBob and Squidward are transported back, fusing them.

Sandy sees what has happened and is terrified. When they walk out, SpongeBob has his normal head/body, while Squidward's head is sticking out of the upper left. They are also in control of each other's arms; SpongeBob is controlling Squidward's hand, while Squidward is controlling SpongeBob's. Squidward tries to get out, but he cannot. He is scared of the fact he and SpongeBob are stuck together. SpongeBob says they can be together forever now, scaring him more. Squidward asks Sandy to do something. She decides to zap them back in the transporter. She zaps them to a school, a hospital, and an unnamed planet, but they are still stuck together. Squidward says she has to get them unstuck. Sandy tells Squidward she was working on a new invention, but it is not ready. He tells her to hurry because he cannot stay stuck to SpongeBob.

SpongeBob and Squidward fused together.

She tells him to stay calm, and she will continue working on it. Squidward and SpongeBob are riding to work on a bike. SpongeBob says he will drive, but Squidward keeps getting hit by the wheel. They crash into the kitchen, and Mr. Krabs asks what happened. They stand up, revealing their morphed body. Mr. Krabs just tells them to get to work. They try working, but they cannot because they are stuck together. Mr. Krabs kicks them out and tells them not to come back until they fix their problem. SpongeBob says they still have each other, and Squidward angrily says that is how they ended up like this in the first place. Squidward practices playing clarinet while SpongeBob is sad. A surfer guy passes and says "Rock on, Freaky Bro." They run over to Sandy's and ask her if she has found a way to fix them. Sandy says she has invented the Molecular Separator Ray. Squidward is ready to be free, but Sandy says the invention is not complete . She says she will probably have it ready the day after tomorrow. Squidward frantically puts his face on her helmet and tells her he has a performance tomorrow. So she tells him she will have it ready before he goes on. SpongeBob and Squidward try to go to their own houses, but they cannot due to being stuck.

Squidward tries by force, but it pushes their houses together. At the clarinet performance the next day, Squidward is wondering where Sandy is. He thinks about giving up, but SpongeBob tells him this is his big chance to be a star. Squidward decides to wear a cloak to hide SpongeBob. He starts playing his clarinet, upsetting everyone. A loose nail pulls the cloak off, revealing their secret. Amazingly, the crowd loves this sight and starts cheering. Excited, Squidward basks at the moment as he finally knows what it feels like to be a star. Suddenly, Sandy shows up and tells Squidward she finished the device. Squidward tries to tell her not to, but she separates the two, displeasing the crowd. Squidward starts playing his clarinet again, but everyone except SpongeBob hates the sound of it.

The crowd leaves in anger and disgust, except Patrick, Mr. Krabs, Pearl, Larry, and Mrs. Puff, as Squidward says his one moment of fame is gone. He yanks the machine from Sandy and tries to reverse it. Sandy tries telling him that it is a very sensitive device. Suddenly, the machine breaks and Squidward is morphed along with all those present. The episode cuts to Squidward in a psychiatrist's office.

Squidward fused together with others, to his dismay.

As the doctor asks Squidward to tell him what the problem is, he says that it all started when he was born. Before the episode closes, it is revealed that Squidward, together with SpongeBob, Patrick, Sandy, Mr. Krabs, Pearl, and Mrs. Puff are all horribly fused into a grotesque disgusted flesh-colored blob, much to his dismay.

Reception[]

  • "SquidBob TentaclePants" was ranked #78 during the Best Day Ever event from November 9–10, 2006.
  • "SquidBob TentaclePants" was ranked #50 during the SpongeBob's Top 100 event in the UK and Ireland from June 4-8, 2012.

Trivia[]

General[]

  • This episode and its sister episode both have titles that make puns of SpongeBob's name.
  • A clip from this episode is seen in an ad for SpongeBob SquarePants DVDs in 2008 in titled Attack of the SpongeBob DVDs.
  • The title card for this episode is similar to that of "Fear of a Krabby Patty."
  • In this episode and "Sheldon SquarePants," SpongeBob is shown wearing a clip-on necktie, but in "Squid on Strike," he wears an actual necktie.
    • In "Sheldon SquarePants," SpongeBob claims he never learned to tie a necktie.
  • The voice that Dee Bradley Baker uses for the male alien is the same one he would later use for Globulous Maximus in SpongeBob SquarePants featuring Nicktoons: Globs of Doom.
  • Mr. Krabs says, "Time is money!" the same way he says it in "Wet Painters."
  • When one of the fish shouts "Rock on!," he has four fingers.
  • Sandals and Incidental 37B are oddly given the same voice and dialogue.
  • In the UK and Ireland, three scenes where edited due to fast motion: firstly, the scene where SpongeBob and Squidward are first morphed together was edited to slow down the first flash and zoom in and darken the screen in the part where they are sent flying through the air when changing shape, and the flash after that was also edited out, secondly, the part where Sandy separates Squidward and SpongeBob was edited to slow down the flashing screen, and thirdly, the scene where Sandy's machine explodes was edited to remove some flashing lights.[4]
  • The original airing of this episode had Squidward talking to a therapist after Sandy's machine exploded, and was deformed and misshapen into a liquid ball of the fused characters that was in the scene where Sandy's machine exploded. This scene was cut from reruns in some countries since it is considered too gruesome,[citation needed] though it remains intact in the US, Canada, Latin America, UK and Ireland,[5][6] Central & Eastern Europe, Turkey, Iberia, Germany, Poland, Scandinavia, Greece, France, South Korea, South Africa, Belgium, Netherlands, and Russia[7] airings, all digital and streaming releases on Amazon Prime Video, LeapFrog, Paramount+, and iTunes, and DVD releases.
    • However, in some areas of Kentucky, the ending scene where several different characters are fused with Squidward was at one point cut out, as the cable provider, Insight Communications, has been known to censor explicit content from television.[citation needed]
  • In the ending scene where Squidward and the others are fused together, a blue eyeball can be seen in the blob. It is unknown whose eye it was.
  • This is the first episode for two things:
    • The first episode to use the "Sleazy Sax" music track in the series.
    • The first episode where Sandy's scientific personality is established.
  • This episode marks the second time Squidward and SpongeBob appear joined together. The first is "Can You Spare a Dime?"
  • This episode marks the third time SpongeBob is called "SpongeBoob." The first is in "Missing Identity" and the second is in the first movie.
  • This along with its sister episode were used as a credits guideline for the 2006-09[8] "Arrow and Flowers"[9] template on NIckelodeon.[10]
  • During the Best Day Ever marathon, this episode was paired up with "Imitation Krabs."[11]

Cultural references[]

  • The plot of this episode is loosely based on Kurt Numann's 1958 science fiction horror film The Fly and David Cronenberg's 1986 body horror remake of the same name.
  • Squidward's hair in his dream is similar to Kenny G's.
  • When SpongeBob and Squidward—still fused—walk through the Krusty Krab, Lenny, in bewildered confusion, drops his Krabby Patty, picks up a bottle of hot sauce and says "I've gotta lay off the hot sauce," which is a play on words with the phrase "lay off the sauce" (regarding "sauce" as alcohol).
  • The aliens in unnamed planet is similar to monsters in "Sea of Monsters" in the 1968 Beatles film Yellow Submarine.

Errors[]

SquidBob TentaclePants 012

SpongeBob's top house window is usually not this big.

  • SpongeBob's top house window is larger than usual, while in other episodes, his house window is smaller.
  • The Krusty Krab sign is scattered whenever SpongeBob tried to unmorph Squidward.
SquidBob TentaclePants 130

Yellow tentacle error.

  • When Squidward speaks to Sandy and says, "I can't stay stuck to that yellow freak" and it zooms in on SpongeBob, the tentacle arm is yellow instead of the usual bluish color.
  • When SpongeBob and Squidward go to their houses, they use their arms instead of each other's arms.
  • At the recital, when SpongeBob convinces Squidward to perform while they’re still fused together, he uses his own arm rather than Squidward's one.
SquidBob TentaclePants 160

Two of the fishes' eyes are off.

  • In the part where Incidental 41 holds his barf, Sandals' eyes are not attached to his body.
  • Although Larry is in the hall when Squidward accidentally fires the laser, he is not present in the blob of fused characters. Instead, an eyeball takes his place.
  • Patrick appears at the end of the episode, but does not verbally speak, though he is heard cheering after the audience sees SpongeBob and Squidward fused. Despite this, he is uncredited.
  • In the closing credits for this episode, Mary Jo Catlett, who voices Mrs. Puff during the brief scene where she says, "Oh!," is also uncredited.
