SpongeBob SquarePants is a popular cartoon and has been referenced in popular culture numerous times. This page is a list of its references in books and comics.
Ben 10[]
- In the comic "Intergalactic Spazz Club," on the first page, there is a person in a SpongeBob costume.
Big Nate[]
- Nate loses his lucky SpongeBob wristband.
- Arthur mentions SpongeBob after Nate says "Friends are supposed to stand by you and trust you and listen to you!"
- Nate and Peter relate because Peter is in first grade and Nate watches SpongeBob SquarePants.
- Nate has a SpongeBob lunchbox.
Brewster Rockit[]
- On April 21, 2021, a comic featured Pam asking her son if she wanted either SpongeBob or Pokémon as the theme of his birthday party.
Dork Diaries[]
- SpongeBob is referenced several times throughout the Dork Diaries book series.
- In Dork Diaries: Tales From a NOT-SO Fabulous Life, Nikki says that MacKenzie, who had been kicked in the shin by Nikki's younger sister Brianna the previous day, showed up to school the next morning with crutches with heart stickers on them to match her new Gucci handbag, along with a SpongeBob Band-Aid below her left knee.
- In Dork Diaries 2: Tales From a NOT-SO Popular Party Girl, Nikki says that her little sister Brianna's plastic toy spider is "a spider you'd find in a Barbie Dream House or hanging out with SpongeBob SquarePants."
- In Dork Diaries 3: Tales From a NOT-SO Talented Pop Star, Nikki mentions that Theo, a student at her school, could be "SpongeBob's twin brother."
- In Dork Diaries 4: Tales From a NOT-SO Graceful Ice Princess, Nikki says that her little sister Brianna changed into her SpongeBob pajamas after they returned home from the Nutcracker ballet.
- In Dork Diaries 5: Tales From a NOT-SO Smart Miss Know-it-All, at one point when Nikki and Mr. Zimmerman are having a conversation, he tells Nikki to hurry up and get out because SpongeBob will be coming on in 2 minutes and that he is "the last Great American hero."
- In Dork Diaries 6: Tales From a NOT-SO Happy Heartbreaker, Brianna asks Miss Penelope to draw Boots from Dora the Explorer (who needs new boots) before her six o'clock appointment with SpongeBob.
Fear[]
- The show is mentioned in the Gone series' book Fear, when some kids are acting out the episode "Texas when Sandy waits to leave."
Frank and Ernest[]
- On January 17, 2005, Frank and Ernest worked at a cartoon restaurant and Frank said that if SpongeBob SquarePants gets any fatter, they'll have to call him "SpongeCake StretchPants." SpongeBob was not shown in the panel, most likely due to copyright reasons.
Garfield[]
- A 2003 Sunday comic strip of Garfield showed the logo having Garfield looking like SpongeBob with bubbles floating over him and the Garfield logo is in a parody of the SpongeBob logo.
Ghostbusters Comics[]
- In the IDW Comic In a universe where..The Ghostbusters Never Crossed the Streams, close to the end of the book, there is a SpongeBob reference where pictures on a roof have a parody of SpongeBob on them named "LoofaJoe RectangleShorts."
Grand Avenue[]
- On January 16, 2010, the kids were upset about the power going out because now they couldn't watch the SpongeBob marathon on TV.
Guiness World Records[]
- In the Entertainment section of the in the Guinness World Records 2016: TV section, SpongeBob is listed for holding the world record of most wins at the Nickelodeon Kids Choice Awards. Above the listed fact is a licensed stock art image of SpongeBob waving " Hello," with a small fun fact talking about his origins on the side.
- In Blockbusters 2016, there's two pages dedicated to SpongeBob, featuring world records like a fungus named after the character. It is also #5 in the top 10 cartoons with the most episodes, behind The Simpsons, The Bugs Bunny and Tweety Show, Arthur, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
The House of Dark Shadows[]
- In The House of Dark Shadows, David references the episode "SquidBob TentaclePants."
I Funny[]
- In James Patterson's I Funny!, the main character, Jamie Grimm, says that the president will live with SpongeBob.
- In I Totally The Funniest!, SpongeBob appears in the pool.
Nickelodeon Magazine[]
- SpongeBob is mentioned at the end of a Jimmy Neutron and The Fairly OddParents comic. Other Nicktoons appear as well.
- SpongeBob makes a cameo at the end of an All Grown Up! comic. He can be seen on the TV show that the Cooper twins were watching.
- SpongeBob makes a cameo in a Catscratch comic. He can be seen behind Waffle.
The Leftovers[]
- In the novel The Leftovers, one of the characters, Nora Durst, watches the series to cope with losing her son. The episodes "Snowball Effect" and "Slimy Dancing" are described.
Lola[]
- On December 15, 2009, Lola said that her son had a fear of seeing SpongeBob in his underwear.
Marty Pants[]
- In all three of the "Marty Pants" books, a character named Simon draws ONE THING, called "AnenomeBob TrapezoidShorts." Marty points out that, "For copyright reasons, we had to change the character." and "You know the original character."
Monk[]
- In the crime series of books named Monk, the title character is known to have been watching a SpongeBob marathon on Nickelodeon and loved it. This is in the book Mr. Monk on the Road.
- In another Monk book the book, it says that someone looks like SpongeBob SquarePants.
Mother Goose & Grimm[]
- SpongeBob appears in the comic strip Mother Goose & Grimm when Grimm is so focused on the show, he does not come to dinner.
- SpongeBob is mentioned in a 2014 comic strip of Dennis the Menace.
Off the Mark[]
- SpongeBob has appeared many times in the comic strip Off the Mark.
- A January 14, 2002 comic shows a middle-aged SpongeBob with the caption "SpongeBob RoundPants," predating the episode "To SquarePants or Not to SquarePants."
- On the February 10, 2003 comic, SpongeBob's friends peek at his window while he is wearing a skirt, with the caption "The Secret Life of SpongeBob SquareSkirt."
- On August 8, 2005, Harold SquarePants is talking to Margaret saying that she should stop buying diapers for baby SpongeBob as he is more absorbent than the diapers.
- SpongeBob visits a pore concealer on the January 11, 2011 comic.
- On April 12, 2012, a comic showed SpongeBob ringing himself out at a Harpoon Brewery, which showed people how he sobers up after a night of drinking alcohol.
- On December 25, 2012, a comic showed SpongeBob holding a box with the brand name "Square Snuggie" after he got it for Christmas.
- On March 4, 2013, a comic showed SpongeBob with jeans, with the caption "SpongeBob SkinnyJeans."
- On the May 19, 2014 comic, SpongeBob's "wife" (a crudely drawn Girly Teengirl) is asking him where their son is, while SpongeBob is using him to clean the toilet.
- On the May 5, 2015 comic, SpongeBob is taking a bath on the Krusty Krab sink while washing the dishes at the same time.
- On the September 27, 2020 comic, a rat takes a bite on SpongeBob's head, saying that it was the worst cheese ever.
One Big Happy[]
- On April 21st, 2021, Ruthie noted how cartoon characters never changed their clothes and listed SpongeBob as one of those characters.
Ranger Rick[]
- On a page in the December/January 2017 issue of the American children's magazine Ranger Rick, SpongeBob, along with other celebrities and fictional characters celebrate the magazine's 50th anniversary. SpongeBob's caption reads: "Happy birthday! Here's a sponge cake! From everyone at Nickelodeon's SpongeBob SquarePants!"
Room (novel)[]
- Jack watches the SpongeBob SquarePants episode "Frankendoodle" and touches SpongeBob and Patrick, but not Squidward due to being very creepy.
Simpsons Comics[]
- In a Simpsons Comics issue, Lenny and Homer are dressed like Patrick and SpongeBob respectively. in the comic
- In a Simpsons Comic, Bart is in the androids dungeon where lots of comics are in the background ,and on the counter is a book called SpongeSteve, which SpongeBob can be seen on the cover of the comic book.
- In a Bart Simpson Comics issue, Bart has a dream with a parody of SpongeBob SquarePants entitled "SpongeBart SquarePants." It features Bart Simpson as SpongeBob, Milhouse Van Houten as Patrick, Mr. Burns as Squidward, and Krusty the Clown as Mr. Krabs. The "Krusty Krabby Burger" is a parody of the Krusty Krab.
Sisterhood[]
- In Girls in Pants: The Third Summer of the Sisterhood, one of the chapter's titles is Patrick's quote from "Patty Hype," "I can't see my forehead."

- In the March 31st, 2010 comic, a character apologizes to a square for drawing on it so that it would look like SpongeBob.
Zits[]
- On April 21st, 2021, Jeremy says that he watches SpongeBob instead of the news because of how scary the world is.
