SpongeBob SquarePants is the European Portuguese dub of SpongeBob SquarePants. It is part of International SpongeBob SquarePants.
Channel history[]
The series premiered on SIC, where it aired from 2001 to 2004. One year later, Nickelodeon Portugal launched, notably bringing episodes beyond the second season to the country. In 2009, the SIC-dubbed episodes finally received a redub by Nickelodeon. In September of 2010, the Nick dub premiered on TVI, initially airing the sixth season followed by the seventh season before premiering the fifth season. The show aired there until 2014. MTV aired it in English with subtitles between September 2010 and April 2011, and only season 1 and the first half of season 2 aired there. Also, the special "SpongeBob SquarePants vs. The Big One" aired on the channel on April 26, 2009 in English with Portuguese subtitles
The dub is currently airing on Nickelodeon in Portugal. Previously it aired on TVI, between 2010 and 2014, and from 2012 as part of the now-defunct Kid Kanal block. The network started with season 6 (subsequently repeated), then aired season 7 and later bought season 5.
As of December 2020, Nickelodeon Iberia airs seasons 6 to 13 (5 aired in the fall of 2020).

Trivia[]
- Unlike most other SpongeBob SquarePants international dubs, this version retains the original English title.
- The same can be applied to the Dutch, Filipino, Indonesian, Irish, Malay, and Urdu dubs.
- Since Portugal shares the same Nickelodeon feed with Spain (since September 1, 2009), the title card at the end of the intro said Bob Esponja in seasons 1-5, because the European Spanish footage was already recorded when the Spanish feed was technically independent (read more below)
- The European Portuguese has had a total of 5 general intros.
- In seasons 1-5, the dub used the international version, where after SpongeBob lands in the bath, the bubbles reading 'SpongeBob SquarePants' are instead represented by a SpongeBob bubble, which then pops. Then, instead of clashing together a sign saying 'SpongeBob SquarePants', again, it is replaced with SpongeBob's face, which then changes colors. When the fish shows up, after the part where the kids chant 'SpongeBob SquarePants' (which is resembled by quick text reading Bob Esponja), a SpongeBob silhouette appears for three screens, and then he is revealed. After, when SpongeBob jumps on the letters, instead, it is replaced with a background. This version is used as described in season 2–5. This is mainly due to the fact that the Portuguese feed of Nickelodeon has been dependent on the Spanish version since September 2009 and has also affected airings of the fifth season on TVI years later. Recent prints on Nickelodeon Iberia corrected the problem.
- In season 1, however, the scene where the SpongeBob bubble pops is noticeably slowed down, so that when SpongeBob is a silhouette never appears, and the intro is almost delayed the whole time.
- In season 3, the intro used is from the original Nickelodeon dub, which doesn't air anymore except for that season.
- In seasons 6–13, the original's footage is used.
- In the SIC dub (S1-S2), the original footage is used and the intro is dubbed.
- SpongeBob SquarePants has had 3 different dubs in European Portuguese:
- The SIC dub, aired from April 4, 2001[1] to 2004 (the 2 first seasons). The only things found with this dub were:
- The theme song (season 2 DVD by SIC Home Video)
- The song "Loop de Loop" (season 2 DVD by SIC Home Video)
- The episode "The Paper" ("O Melhor da Nickelodeon: Contos Festivos" DVD)
- The 1st Nickelodeon dub (Pim Pam Pum), aired from 2005 to 2010. It is known that the seasons 1 to 5 were dubbed, but the only things found were:
- The complete 3rd season. (which still airs rarely)
- The current Nickelodeon dub (Pim Pam Pum), which still airs to this day.
- The SIC dub, aired from April 4, 2001[1] to 2004 (the 2 first seasons). The only things found with this dub were:
