SpongeBob Schwammkopf is the German dub of SpongeBob SquarePants. It is part of International SpongeBob SquarePants.

Broadcast[]

The dub first aired on Super RTL as part of their programming block Toggo on August 23, 2002 when the channel got the rights to air Nickelodeon shows. Back in 1998, Nickelodeon Germany closed due to its more successful rival, KiKa. After the relaunch of Nickelodeon Germany in 2005, the channel continued to air reruns of seasons 1 to the first episodes of season 4, until June 28, 2009, thus marking its first run on Super RTL.

On May 5, 2021, it was announced that Super RTL has brought back the airing rights to air Nickelodeon shows, thus starting its second run.[1]

Trivia[]

  • Jürgen Kluckert also voiced Benjamin Blümchen from the show of the same name and the character has been referenced in the German dub of the episode "Born Again Krabs," where Mr. Krabs tells the Flying Dutchman that he is not Eugene Krabs but instead tells him that he is "Benjamin Blümchen."
  • In "Christmas Who?," Sandy tells SpongeBob about the Nativity, the Three Wise Men, and Farmhand Rupert. Farmhand Rupert was St. Nicholas' companion in German folklore.
  • In "Band Geeks," instead of a Sedan, Patrick mentions an Opel Kapitän. The Kapitän was a model of the German brand Opel make of car, which was manufactured from 1938 to 1970.[citation needed]

"Naughty Nautical Neighbors" title card.

  • The title cards in seasons 1-12 are translated and have had 4 fonts.
    • The first and second seasons used the Gilligan's Island font.
    • Seasons 3-8 used various fonts on the title cards.
    • In late season 8 and season 9, Krabby Patty was integrated into some title cards (it also remade the title card of "Dumped")[citation needed]
    • In seasons 10-12, SpongeBoy Me Bob is the title card font.
  • In "Squid on Strike," after Squidward is trampled by the crowd a second time, he says, "Food first, morals later." This is a quote from Bertolt Brecht's The Threepenny Opera.
  • After The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water, both Tobias Lelle and Joachim Kaps auditioned for the role of Squidward to replace his original voice actor, Eberhard Prüter, who died in October 2014 at age 69. Both auditions were streamed online. Lelle had two auditions, in a normal voice and in a slightly more nasal one. The role eventually went to Joachim Kaps. Additionally, Squidward is the only SpongeBob character in the German dub whose replacement was chosen by the general public.[citation needed]
    • This also happened to Plankton, whose voice actor. Thomas Petruo, died in April 2018 at age 61. His void was filled by Sebastian Christoph Jacob, although unlike Squidward, Plankton's replacement was not chosen by the public.[citation needed]
  • The word "SquarePants" in the theme song has been replaced with "Schwammkopf."
  • On the original SpongeBob Schwammkopf title card, the sketch of SpongeBob does not have legs. This has been fixed on the new title card.
  • Patrick's old voice actor, Marco Kröger, was fired after a disagreement with Nickelodeon, Fritz Rott replaced his role.[citation needed]
  • There is an old German Comedy Central promo that accuses SpongeBob of being transgender. The episodes containing these claims are aired as part of the Captain's Secrets marathon on 28 November.[2]
  • The show, besides Think Happy - The Year of the Sponge, aired on Viva for (possibly) one week.
  • Mr. Krabs' voice actor Jürgen Kluckert passed away on August 16, 2023 at age 79. Axel Lutter will become the new voice actor of Mr. Krabs.
  • The dub manages to dub most nonverbal sounds. The few exceptions were Squidward's snoring in Truth or Square and SpongeBob's screaming in The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water .
