Relationship[]

SpongeBob and Gary meeting for the first time at Camp Coral in the third movie.

It is suggested in "Have You Seen This Snail?" and "Treats!" that SpongeBob has had Gary ever since the former was a little boy, as it was also revealed that he was adopted. SpongeBob is revealed to have bought him at the animal shelter in "Plankton's Pet." However, a flashback shown in The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run showcases that SpongeBob first met Gary at Camp Coral when he was a 10-year-old boy. SpongeBob then later adopted Gary when he got older.[1]

As seen in "Ugh," their ancestors were shown to have a similar relationship.

Gary often serves as an advice-giver to SpongeBob when no one else in Bikini Bottom is willing to help him. SpongeBob often takes said advice despite it only being given in meows. However, SpongeBob occasionally takes advantage of Gary or forces him into situations against his will.

Their love for each other[]

SpongeBob often views Gary as a best friend rather than just a pet, as implied by the musical number "Gary Come Home" from "Have You Seen This Snail?" Though the two have come into conflict from time to time, they usually reconcile near the end and admit that they still love one another no matter what.

SpongeBob is shown to go through stages of depression when isolated from Gary, as seen in "Dumped" when Gary neglects him in favor of Patrick and when he feels regretful for making Gary run away in "Have You Seen This Snail?" and puts up lost pet fliers to get him back.

In "Have You Seen This Snail?," before Gary leaves home, he leaves a letter to thank SpongeBob for taking care of him, despite the circumstances. Upon reading the letter, SpongeBob is devastated and feels guilty for neglecting his pet. He goes to find him but has no luck and starts crying over his loss. SpongeBob then continues his search around town by passing out fliers with Gary on them. Later on, Gary finds one of SpongeBob's fliers and realizes that SpongeBob was looking for him, which means he does care for him. Gary decides to go back before he realizes that his new owner wants to feed him to death. After escaping her, he returns to SpongeBob, who was in the middle of a breakdown of his loss before he is overjoyed at his pet's return and apologizes for his previous treatment of him.

In "The Cent of Money," SpongeBob comes to Gary's defense when Mr. Krabs takes advantage of his ability to detect money and coldly mistreats him. He states that while he was aware of Gary’s ability to attract coins, he knew that the process caused him discomfort and refused to do that to him.

In "Gary in Love," Gary sneaks out of the house at night to go see his recent crush and SpongeBob thinks he got kidnapped and searches for him. After finding him, SpongeBob is ready to defend him until he discovers he left on his own and finds out he was in love. When Gary's crush finds a new love and ditches him, SpongeBob comforts his sad pet but is relieved he overcame it and lets him make a new friend.

In "The Krabby Patty That Ate Bikini Bottom," SpongeBob runs home to warn Gary of the danger of the giant patty but Gary ignores it only for SpongeBob to run away with him. Gary then sees SpongeBob was right as they are saved by Sandy.

In "The Monster Who Came to Bikini Bottom," SpongeBob gets worried about Gary when Rrarrg is about to destroy their house. SpongeBob tells Gary to parachute down and he catches him.

During "Frozen Face-Off," SpongeBob notices Gary is suffering frostbite from traveling in the snow and carrying many passengers on the sleigh. Seeing this, SpongeBob has Gary take a break from the event.

In "SpongeBob You're Fired," Gary notices SpongeBob's sadness and comforts him after he loses his job. While feeding Gary, SpongeBob is happy to know there is one person who depends on him. Later, when SpongeBob attempts to feed Gary, he notices they are out of snail food, so he makes due by making homemade snail food out of fresh produce. Gary loves the food and deems it the most delicious kind he has ever eaten.

In "Pineapple Invasion," SpongeBob shows to have faith in his pet, as he trusts Gary to protect the Krabby Patty secret formula from Plankton while he is at work. Gary takes this job very seriously and fights Plankton relentlessly as the latter makes multiple attempts to break into SpongeBob's house.

In "Appointment TV," Gary, along with Patrick, Squidward, Mr. Krabs, Larry, Sandy, Plankton, and Mrs. Puff, sees how completely sad SpongeBob is when he missed the lost episode of Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy and learned that everyone took advantage of his kindness. To make it up to him, he and the others put on a play in a recitation of the lost episode.

In "SpongeBob's Big Birthday Blowout," Gary waits for SpongeBob to wake up on his birthday to give him his present. After SpongeBob wakes up, the two celebrate SpongeBob's birthday and the latter is grateful for his present. When SpongeBob leaves, Gary stays behind to help SpongeBob's friends decorate for the party. After he returns, SpongeBob finds the house destroyed and everyone asleep from the party planning. Nevertheless, SpongeBob is excited that his family and friends would do so much for him. SpongeBob lists Gary as his loyal pet and how he's grateful to have him. When Patchy the Pirate arrives and sings the birthday song, Gary along with everyone else wakes up and properly celebrates a happy SpongeBob's birthday.

Instances of conflict[]

Gary Put Puffy Fluffy Down

"Gary! You put Fluffy down right now!"

Despite their friendly relations, SpongeBob has often fought with Gary and put him through stressful situations.

  • During "Sandy's Rocket," SpongeBob mistakes Gary for an alien and captures him.
  • In "Dumped," SpongeBob decides that he does not need Gary anymore and tries to replace him with different pets until he fails and breaks down in tears.
  • During "The Secret Box," Gary speaks to tell SpongeBob that his plan to uncover Patrick's secret is foolish. SpongeBob turns his advice down because he is just an animal.
  • In "Gary Takes a Bath," SpongeBob pulls off several attempts to get Gary to bathe even though snails are opposed to water. He even manages to break his shell in a game of leapfrog to transport him to the bathtub and Gary even hits SpongeBob in the face with a cane for injuring him.
  • In "The Great Snail Race," SpongeBob pressures Gary into winning the eponymous event by overtraining him, which leads to his eyes and shell exploding during the race.
  • In "Have You Seen This Snail?," when trying to get SpongeBob's attention off the Dirty Bubble challenge so he can feed him, SpongeBob refuses to do so since he is trying to focus on the paddleball, leading Gary to run away from home and feeling as though SpongeBob does not care about him anymore.
  • In "What Ever Happened to SpongeBob?," SpongeBob accidentally breaks Gary's shell.
  • In "Grooming Gary," SpongeBob tries to get Gary to enter the Bikini Bottom Pet Show, but Gary doesn't want to. So, with the help of Patrick, SpongeBob goes to extreme lengths by forcefully dressing Gary in fancy clothing. As they enter the show, Gary did unsuccessful attempts to get SpongeBob to stop pampering him. When Gary got a turn to have the judge look at his shell, Gary is pushed to the edge and bites the judge. Gary goes up to the podium and rallies all of the other pets to go on a pet riot. Gary and the other pets rip off their fancy clothing and attack their owners in revenge for all of the pampering. SpongeBob, feeling guilty for putting his pet through all that pampering, stops the riot and explains to everyone that Gary and the other pets want to be treated fairly as companions, not dress-up dolls in scratchy outfits. SpongeBob then apologizes to Gary for forcing him to enter the pet show against his will and promises to not ever do it again, much to Gary's happiness.
  • In "A Pal for Gary," SpongeBob wrongfully berates and punishes Gary for mistreating and ignoring his new "friend," Puffy Fluffy, who was supposed to keep him company so he isn't lonely. He even blames him for all the damage that he has done to the house, even when Fluffy is seen eating Gary right in front of him and especially when he sends him away. Gary is shown to be irritated by SpongeBob's obliviousness and support for the monster near the end of the episode. Naturally, this is because SpongeBob ignored the seller's warning that Puffy's species is dangerous and hostile around other pets.
  • During "Treats!," Gary pesters SpongeBob for Snail Bites, even keeping him up for days and SpongeBob cannot bring himself to refuse him. Gary's obsession causes the two to travel across the whole world to search but there is no luck. Eventually, it's only through Patrick's advice does SpongeBob finally tell him "No" and Gary complies with his order.
  • In "Gary's New Toy," Gary's obsessive attachment to a new toy ball causes him to abandon SpongeBob in favor of the said ball. As a result, SpongeBob is forced to leave his house and reside under a bench.
  • In "SpongeBob You're Fired," when SpongeBob is sad after being fired from work, Gary approaches him with his food bowl. SpongeBob makes sarcastic comments before going to feed Gary.
  • In The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water, as society breaks down, Gary becomes the King of Snails. Gary refuses to join SpongeBob and Plankton's team while setting his guards on the protesting SpongeBob.
  • In "House Worming," Gary becomes far too fed up with the new worms infesting SpongeBob's holes and kicks him out of his own house as a result.
  • In "Gary's Got Legs," Gary drives over SpongeBob with a tank about 9 times, then two scenes after that, SpongeBob teaches him how to use his limbs properly, but when they go to the Snail Park, that is when Gary gets carried away, starting with Gary making a worm and his owner angry and kicking them both away in the sky, then causing havoc by kicking everyone out.
