Video game

The Game Boy Advance version of SpongeBob's Atlantis SquarePantis is a SpongeBob SquarePants video game for the Game Boy Advance. This version was developed by Altron and published by THQ. It is based on the episode of the same name.

Plot[]

The plot of the game is similar to the episode, with a few minor differences:

  • Mr. Krabs and Sandy were not in the museum when the Amulet's pieces were joined together, and had to be convinced to tag along to Atlantis.
    • Sandy was even skeptical about the existence of Atlantis, while in the episode, she was interested to go from the start.
  • Scenes of the characters touring Atlantis are skipped; the game directly jumps to SpongeBob and Patrick in the room of the oldest living bubble.
  • The escape from Atlantis is greatly expanded.
    • There is a new subplot where Sandy is captured by the Atlanteans.
    • The Royal Guard Commander, who is not featured in the episode, appears as a boss twice.
  • Although not directly acknowledged in the cutscenes, the final world involved the characters exploring the outdoor areas of Atlantis.
  • During the battle with Plankton's tank, it shoots actual missiles instead of ice cream. Plankton also becomes a giant afterwards. Neither of these happen in the episode nor are acknowledged in the game's cutscenes.

Gameplay[]

The game is a 2D platformer where two characters are played at the same time: the player character and the partner character. The former is the character being controlled, while the latter is the character who follows around. The player can switch between the player and partner characters anytime. To change the pair of characters being used, the player must find a special door. Different combinations of characters result in different special moves that can be used to overcome specific types of obstacles.

  • SpongeBob and Patrick – The duo can smash blocks by buttstomping simultaneously
  • SpongeBob and Mr. Krabs – Mr. Krabs can bounce on SpongeBob to reach high places
  • SpongeBob and Sandy – Sandy can use SpongeBob as a shield
  • Patrick and Mr. Krabs – Patrick uses Mr. Krabs as a seaweed mower
  • Patrick and Sandy – Sandy can throw Patrick to reach hard-to-reach places
  • Mr. Krabs and Sandy – Sandy uses Mr. Krabs like a helicopter to fly through long gaps

The main collectibles are the Melody Shells, which are used to gain experience points. Gaining enough experience points increases the overall health of the characters. In addition to the platforming stages, the game also features mini-games.

Trivia[]

General[]

  • All versions of this game (with the exception of the Wii version) were released 20 days before the episode premiered.
  • This was the last official SpongeBob SquarePants video game released for the Game Boy Advance.
  • Mrs. Puff narrates the tutorials in this version. However, she does not appear in the episode.

Episode references[]

  • This game makes a few references to The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie:
    • The image of Bikini Bottom in the first cutscene is taken from the first film.
    • The designs of SpongeBob, Squidward, and Patrick's houses, as well as the Krusty Krab, are all similar to the movie.
    • SpongeBob and Patrick make their surprised faces when they lose all their health.
    • SpongeBob and Patrick buttstomp just like how they did in the beginning of the movie.
    • The designs of some thugs from the Thug Tug are used for the enemies.
    • Patrick's sprites when he dances are based on when he and SpongeBob go to the bathroom of the Thug Tug and have a bubble party.
  • During the Underwater Mozart mini-game, SpongeBob babbles just like he does in "I'm with Stupid."
  • Most special combo moves are also seen in the episode this game is based on.
    • Patrick's buff design from "The Fry Cook Games" is seen when he uses Mr. Krabs as a seaweed mower. In the episode, Sandy is the one who uses Mr. Krabs this way.
    • SpongeBob makes a face similar to SpongeTron from "SB-129" when Sandy uses him as a shield.
