The splinter is a small piece of wood that SpongeBob accidentally gets stuck in his thumb in the episode of the same name.
Role in episode[]
In the Krusty Krab kitchen, after a failed attempt to grab his spatula out from the ceiling, SpongeBob falls on the ground and his thumb rams into a piece of the wood flooring sticking out, causing him to receive the splinter. It immediately gives SpongeBob pain and it is hard for him to get it out. He tries numerous times to remove it but fails, so he contacts Patrick for help. He then puts trash from the dumpster onto his thumb, making it swollen, turn purple and build green pus inside, thus worsening his condition.
Squidward tells Mr. Krabs about the splinter, as he feels it would send SpongeBob back home. At the end of the episode, Mr. Krabs easily pulls it out and SpongeBob's thumb aches briefly before puffing out confetti, followed by the ejection of green pus, restoring the thumb to normal before revealing he would've had to pay his worker's compensation, which is when workers still get paid even when they get sent home. Squidward injures himself as an attempt to get his worker's comp, but he can't because his shift is already over, at his dismay.
