Synopsis

SpongeBob and Patrick are at Near Mint Comic Books, and Patrick sees an ad for a mail-in offer promising to adapt a poem into a song. Patrick has a flashback while he is trying to write his poem at SpongeBob's house. He remembers a time from when he was younger in which he recited the poem: "Roses are blue. Violets are red. I have to go to the bathroom." The gym teacher told him that he had told him repeatedly that it was gym class, so he had the class throw dodgeballs at him. Nonetheless, he has a plan to write his song fast so it would be a masterpiece and he won't get hit by dodgeballs. Patrick takes SpongeBob's comic book money to enter ($100) and submits an entry called "I Wrote This." The song does not make much sense and it is so awful that even the paper smells terrible when he submits it, and the band dies recording it. When the two listen to the song, it turns out to be so bad that it melts down SpongeBob's house. SpongeBob, however, enforces to Patrick that it is the greatest song ever, so he and Patrick try to get the song on the radio.

They are immediately kicked out by the radio station, so, finding a different method, they climb up the Radio Tower and use a chewed gum to stick the record player to the top of the antenna. The song is heard throughout the town, which causes rioting, breakups, literal head explosions, and a plane crash into a fireworks storage building. The town hates the song so much that they form an angry mob, which is headed by Fred. They express their hatred for the song and run SpongeBob and Patrick down to ground. Patrick starts to sing the song in front of everyone until his old gym teacher arrives, saying that Patrick never learned his lesson, which leads to the two getting humiliated as the angry crowd pelts them with dodgeballs as punishment, ending the episode.

Trivia

General

  • This episode first aired with "Rise and Shine"/"Waiting," but is paired with "The Krusty Sponge" in the later reruns.
  • This is one of the episodes that aired during the Patrick for President marathon, along with "Driven to Tears," "Rule of Dumb," "The Pink Purloiner," "The Gift of Gum," "Rise and Shine," and "Waiting."
  • The braces-wearing orange nerd fish, first seen in the episode "No Weenies Allowed" during the Weenie Hut Juniors scenes, and later seen in "Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy VI: The Motion Picture" as a member of the Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy Fan Club, appears at the comic shop in the beginning of this episode.
  • When SpongeBob asks Gary if he owns a dodgeball, Gary meows and looks away, suggesting that he does have one secretly.
  • The scene where the gears in Patrick's head turn was previously seen in "Patrick SmartPants."
  • The band is shown to be able to successfully record each song in one take, when in real life it normally requires more than one take to master each song.
  • At the time this episode aired in 2007, Patrick's song should have been on a CD, not a record, because records (though for nostalgia purposes is still in limited production) went obsolete in the early 1990s.
    • However, records were brought back in either the late 2000s/early 2010s.
  • This is the second episode where Patrick pulls SpongeBob's arm off. The first is "Big Pink Loser."
  • Patrick has three fans who like his song: SpongeBob, Old Man Jenkins, and the orange Harold.
  • Patrick accurately describes a riot as an "angry mob with pitchforks and torches," but SpongeBob mistakes it for a fan club, marking another moment of Patrick's brief high intellect.
  • The time card "The Next Day" has music notes and musical instruments on the background.
  • The ukulele in the title card is the same one in F.U.N.
  • The old man walker is the only guy who liked the song I Wrote This among with Spongebob and Patrick.

Cultural references

  • The title is a play on the nursery rhyme "Sing a Song of Sixpence."
  • One of the comics in Near Mint Comic Books contains an image of a creature that looks similar to Godzilla.
  • There is a comic in Near Mint Comic Books called Atom, which might be a reference to Atom, a DC Comics character.
  • When SpongeBob and Patrick climb up the radio tower, the space object that passes them resembles Sputnik 1, the Soviet Union's and the world's first artificial satellite.
  • The radio mast on the radio station looks exactly like Warsaw Radio Mast in Poland, which was the world's tallest structure until it collapsed in 1991.

Errors

  • When Patrick's brain is working, if one were to look closely at the doorway, the door is nowhere in sight. However, moments later, SpongeBob is knocking on the door.
  • When the record producer gives SpongeBob and Patrick the single copy of "I Wrote This," it is a CD. Later, when SpongeBob and Patrick are at the top of the radio tower, it is a vinyl record.
  • During "I Wrote This," in the song lyric "My mommy named it Fred," the closed-captions read "My mommy made the bread."
  • When Fred says, "Who's re-", from his line, "Who's responsible for that song on the radio?", Jimmy Gus lip syncs to what Fred says.
  • On Netflix, the time card "The Next Day" is not read out.

Running gags

  • Bikini Bottomites being annoyed by Patrick's song except for SpongeBob and Old Man Walker.
  • SpongeBob's arms being removed from his body.
  • Patrick failing to write good poems, causing his gym teacher to prompt everyone to pelt him with dodgeballs.
