The fifth season of the American animated television series SpongeBob SquarePants, created by former marine biologist and animator Stephen Hillenburg was announced on November 9, 2005.[1]

A total of 20 half-hours were produced for this season, bringing the total number of half-hour episodes up to 100.

Season 5 premiered on February 19, 2007 with "Rise and Shine," "Waiting," and "Sing a Song of Patrick," and ended on July 19, 2009 with "Goo Goo Gas."

The Season 5 DVDs were split by volume. The volume one DVD was released in Region 1 on September 4, 2007, the volume two DVD was released on November 18, 2008, and the season set was released entirely in Region 2 on November 16, 2009, Region 4 on December 3, 2009, and in Region 1 on November 13, 2012.

    • This is the first time that a season has an episode of three segments since the first season.
  • This is the first season of a few things:
    • The first season to have an hour-long special.
    • The first and currently only season of the main series to begin with a double-length episode; the second is the first season of Kamp Koral: SpongeBob's Under Years.
    • The first time SpongeBob wears green pajamas and a nightcap to bed instead of his underwear and shoes, which become a recurring element for future seasons.
  • This was the last season of many things:
    • The last to have three segments in one episode until season 13.
    • The last to finish its broadcast during Nickelodeon's 1984-2009 splat era.
    • The last to consist of 20 half-hour episodes.
      • The standard number of episodes was changed to 26 for seasons 6 to 13 and 13 for season 14 onwards, with season 10 being the only exception, having 11 instead.
