The fifteenth season of the American animated television series SpongeBob SquarePants, created by former marine biologist and animator Stephen Hillenburg, was announced on September 29, 2023.[1]

It was originally confirmed that this season would consist of 26 half-hour episodes.[2] However, on September 7, 2024, the season was shortened to 20 half-hour episodes,[3] and on February 22, 2025, the season was shortened again to 13 half-hour episodes.

Season 15 premiered on July 24, 2024 with "Sammy Suckerfish" and ended on June 20, 2025 with "Making Waves" and "Captain Quasar: The Next Iteration."

Production[]

On October 13, 2023, Carolyn Lawrence, the voice of Sandy Cheeks, released a custom promotional image for the season renewal and the series' 25th anniversary, as well as a piece previously used for the "SpongeBob Universe" premieres that took place during summer 2023. The former piece contained a cut out picture of the main characters hugging SpongeBob from "Nature Pants," as well as a quote from "Texas."[4]

On October 29, 2023, Maaike Scherff uploaded her storyboards for "Unidentified Flailing Octopus" to Speakerdeck.[5]

On November 28, 2023, Nick Lauer confirmed that he had returned to the series to help out with storyboards, specifically for Dave Cunningham's plussing team. His first episode would be "Unidentified Flailing Octopus."[6]

On December 7, 2023, Kamp Koral supervising director Brandon Warren posted a video on Instagram featuring various sketches of SpongeBob characters, saying he had "been brushing up and learning the intricacies of drawing [them] correctly."[7] Considering the former show has since concluded production,[8] and Warren never officially stated that he had left the show or Nickelodeon Animation Studio, it is possible that he transitioned on work from the spin-off to the main series. This was later confirmed when during spring 2024, he would provide punch-up storyboards on "Firehouse Bob" and "Delivery of Doom."

On February 28, 2024, Dylan King announced that he was available for work in the animation industry, meaning that he had left SpongeBob SquarePants. Wary Gary was his final credited episode.

On March 15, 2024, Chase Mack announced he had been freelancing on the series. He would work on "Pablum Plankton."[9]

On April 8, 2024, the animatic for "Smartificial Intelligence" was completed.[10]

On September 11, 2024, it was revealed that the second half of season 14 was split into this season, bringing the number of episodes for the former down to 13 half-hours. The reason for this split was "to keep their sizes more consistent with the season lengths currently consumed on streaming where all shows ultimately end."[11]

At some point, late into the season's production, it was decided for the show's visual style to look more like the first seasons.[12][13] This change was notably highlighted in "Making Waves."

Trivia[]

  • This season contains the second half of the show's fourteenth production season.
  • This is the shortest-running season of SpongeBob SquarePants, with it only taking 10 months and 28 days to complete its broadcast on television.
  • Starting with "Wiener Takes All," the opening credits style was slightly modified.
  • Starting with "Pablum Plankton," Shane Richardson takes over as the new art director, replacing Peter Bennett after he passed away on May 17, 2024. Bennett would continue to be posthumously credited alongside Richardson for the remainder of the season, likely due to the episodes being in production before his passing.
  • This season marks the first of a few things:
    • The first season to not feature any double-length episodes since season 10.
    • The first season of the main series where all episodes are standard-length, and the second in the franchise after season 2 of The Patrick Star Show.
    • The first season of the main series to finish its broadcast on television in less than a year.
    • The first season of the main series where the airing order fully matches the packaging order, and the second in the franchise after season 2 of The Patrick Star Show.
    • The first season in the series to be split from a previous season, and the second in the franchise overall after season 3 of The Patrick Star Show.
      • As such, this is the first season of the main series to entirely consist of holdover episodes from a previous production season.
      • According to Dave Cunningham, the split is not internal, with the team currently working on the "actual season 15."[15] This means that all episodes in this season are still internally part of the show's fourteenth production season.
        • This is evident with the production codes, which remained the same as season 14 despite the split.
  • This season contains the 600th episode segment of the series, that being "Firehouse Bob."
