The tenth season of SpongeBob SquarePants premiered on October 15, 2016. The season was announced on May 21, 2012.[1] It was originally planned to premiere in 2014, but it got delayed due to the production of The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water.

On December 3, 2014, Vincent Waller announced on Twitter that there will be "15 half hours" in season 10.[2]

On July 16, 2016, Vincent Waller announced on Twitter that the number had been shortened to "13 half hours" in season 10.[3] However, the number was again shortened to 11.[4]

Season 10 was confirmed to be in production by Nickelodeon on March 2, 2016.[5]

Season 10 first aired on October 15, 2016 with the episode "Whirly Brains" and ended on December 2, 2017 with "The Incredible Shrinking Sponge." The season was released on DVD on October 15, 2019, nearly 2 years after it had completed broadcast on television.


According to Vincent Waller, season 10's production began on October 12, 2015.[6] Waller also revealed that fans will see a "different flavor in the animation" of the series.[7]

On December 18, 2015, Vincent Waller tweeted some early production work of the first season 10 episode.[8]

The season premiered on October 15, 2016, one year after it began production.[9] Season 10 was in post-production as of late 2016.[10]

  • This is the shortest-running season of SpongeBob SquarePants with it taking only 1 year and 2 months to complete broadcast on television.
  • All of the main male characters are on this season's promotional cover. None of the main female characters (Karen, Sandy Cheeks, Mrs. Puff, and Pearl) are featured.
  • This is the second season without any double-length episodes. The first was season 1.
  • "Sportz?" is the only episode from this season not to premiere on a Saturday.
  • This is the first season to not have Casey Alexander and Derek Iversen as writers since they first started working on the show.
  • This season marks the second Nicktoon to have 10 seasons. The first is The Fairly OddParents, although that show ended at that season.
