Synopsis[]
In the beginning of the short, the narrator talks about food, calling it the fuel that keeps people going. Krabby Patties are used as an example. The narrator then explains that in the Great Barrier Reef, everyone is always on the lookout for their next meal. Food is the driving force behind most of the sea creatures' behavior.
The narrator starts at the bottom of the food chain with plankton. He explains that swimming away is the easiest defense from predators, and as plankton are unable to swim against currents, they are an easy target for many. However, speed is not always a problem for sea creatures; the narrator shows the stonefish as an example.
The stonefish is shown to sit and wait for meals to come, camouflaged as rocks in sand. Next, the harlequin shrimp is shown to be much smaller than the starfish it eats. However, it eats away at starfish for weeks at a time. Patrick appears, crying at the thought. The narrator compares the reef to a giant lunchbox where the sandwiches can eat each other at any time.
The short ends with a recap of the Great Barrier Reef's deteriorating state and a call to action for Junior Citizens of the Reef.
