Synopsis[]
SpongeBob enthusiastically skips to work, but finds that the Krusty Krab has been closed due to a sea urchin infestation. In the meantime, Mr. Krabs has transferred Squidward to the circus, and SpongeBob to the The Salty Spitoon. SpongeBob is frightened by the place and its tough, scary regulars, and is hesitant to go in. Mr. Krabs tells SpongeBob that he just has to look tough, and confront the strongest patron. After going inside, SpongeBob bumps into a large shark. He gets the shark's attention and compliments his blue eyes, which indirectly starts a brawl between another whale patron with green eyes. SpongeBob is pulled out of the battle by an anglerfish, who is the boss of the place, and she takes him to the kitchen.
The grill repeatedly shoots flames, and SpongeBob's "spatula" is a rusty trowel. He questions what happened to the last fry cook, and is shown an Employee of the Month wall, all of whom have been killed. The boss demands that he cook a "brick covered in nails, with extra motor oil." Misinterpreting it as diner slang, SpongeBob serves up a sandwich. The boss rejects it, and SpongeBob cooks the correct dish. The first customer who eats it likes it, and SpongeBob eagerly prepares more.
Suddenly, Mrs. Puff (as "Puff the Tuff") shows up, wearing a wig and spiked jacket. When she sees SpongeBob serving at the grill, she runs out screaming. The shark gets suspicious and asks why Mrs. Puff is afraid of him. Mo and the boss test SpongeBob with some "Trials of Toughness."
The first test is riding a mechanical bull. SpongeBob, thinking that the bull needs a break from people riding it, goes under it and accidentally launches it out of the building. Next, they use a cinder block as a punching bag. SpongeBob misses his aim and knocks over another customer's plate, sending his fork flying and landing in the head of another patron, who compliments his punch. In a "body hair strength" competition, SpongeBob uses his abrasive side and carves a piece of wood into a sculpture of his opponent. SpongeBob is declared the toughest guy in the Spitoon, and is given full power to do whatever he wants to the place.
After a day, the Salty Spitoon is renovated into the "Softy Spitoon." The interior is cute, girly and pink, and all the customers enjoy tea parties, arts, and crafts. A tough new group of bikers show up, surprised at the place being called the toughest in town, and demand to speak to the owner. SpongeBob approaches him, and rather sings a song with the customers about how wholesome the place is. The head biker calls them "weenies," only to be offered food by the shark patron. He rejects the food and makes him cry. The whale defends the shark and threatens the biker, leading to another brawl.
Mr. Krabs arrives, only to walk in on the large-scale fight. The anglerfish boss compliments SpongeBob, who is able to do his job and serve the customers while everyone is fighting. The boss wants to keep him, but Krabs demands to have him back. They get into a fight, and SpongeBob saves Mr. Krabs, saying that the place might be too dangerous for him. He gives Krabs a piggyback ride out of the restaurant, as the Softy Spitoon customers chase after him. A pan back to the restaurant's kitchen shows the Employee of the Month wall, with a photo of a smiling SpongeBob captioned "Employee of da Year" that is surrounded by childlike drawings.

- In Canada, this episode was originally going to air on January 28, 2023 at 10:00 AM, but was later postponed, and got replaced with a rerun of The Patrick Star Show episode "Lost in Couch."
- This episode was originally going to be titled "The Salty Sponge." The only difference is that the word "The" was removed from the finalized title.[11][17][18][19][20]
- This is the second segment from the SpongeBob franchise to face a title change in 2023 involving the word "The," following "The Switch Glitch."
- The title card has the "-itoon" prefix behind the "onge," spelling "Salty Spitoon."
- A duck family member in this episode would later appear in "Friendiversary."
- Mo from Kamp Koral: SpongeBob's Under Years makes her SpongeBob SquarePants debut in this episode.
- SpongeBob breaks the fourth wall by looking at the camera and saying, "Don't worry SpongeBob, it'll be just like working at the Krusty Krab."
- The theme song is also heard when SpongeBob and all the Salty Spitoon customers sing a version of it. Barry Cuda stops them by raising the camera halfway during the song.
- Despite Mrs. Puff being advertised as a prominent character in the promos, she barely appears in the episode itself, quickly escaping the Spitoon once she discovered that SpongeBob is inhibiting the area.
- The "One Day Later" time card uses the background from the "Pickles" title card, albeit in widescreen and without the purple dust.
- This is Andrew Overtoom's final episode paired up with a random supervising director. Starting from it's sister episode, he will be paired with Dave Cunningham.
- Clips from this episode were used in the "Favorite Animated Show" short when Patrick announces SpongeBob SquarePants as a nominee for the 2023 Kids' Choice Awards as well as when the show won the award.
Dub facts[]
- In Indonesia, this episode's title card is undubbed in Vision+. However, it is dubbed in Nickelodeon Asia airings.
- In the Japanese dub, this is the first episode without SpongeBob SquarePants's voice actor Taiki Matsuno's involvement following his death on June 26 2024; Nickelodeon has yet to find a new voice actor for SpongeBob.
Episode references[]
- The female mail carrier was previously seen in "Patrick the Mailman" and The Patrick Star Show episode "To Dad and Back."
- Despite SpongeBob being in an antagonistic relationship with her in "Mailman," aiding Patrick in defeating the fish and its comrades, they seem to be on quite good terms with each other in this episode, sharing smiles.
- SpongeBob makes the same face from "Shell of a Man" when he finds out that the Krusty Krab is closed.
- The closed sign on the Krusty Krab says, "feel free to slide money under the door," like in "Sharks vs. Pods."
- This episode marks the first appearance of the Salty Spitoon in the series since "No Weenies Allowed" in season 3, which means that it took 20 years for this location to return. This is also the first time the interior is shown.
- This episode also marks the first appearance of Weenie Hut Jr's in the series since "No Weenies Allowed."
- "No Weenies Allowed" is also referenced when SpongeBob carefully avoids two ice cubes after he gets into the Salty Spitoon.
- Additionally, portraits of Sandy appear behind the mechanical bull depicting her having conquered the bull riding toughness challenge before. This occurred during the same episode while SpongeBob was still outside arguing with Reg to get into the Salty Spitoon.[21]
- SpongeBob's imagination sequence has him wearing a very large Krusty Krab hat, similar to the one he imagines wearing in "Squid on Strike."
- Mrs. Puff's mohawk wig and outfit from "Potato Puff" is used again in this episode.
- Mrs. Puff's jacket says, "Big Fat Meanie" on the back, which is a reference to a poorly drawn picture that Patrick draws of her in "New Student Starfish."
- SpongeBob's abrasive side from "The Abrasive Side" reappears, and he uses it to shave the wood.
- The Softy Spitoon's craft corner has an drawing of Sandy smiling from "Prehibernation Week."
- Another drawing on the wall depicts the bubble hippo from "Culture Shock."
- Eels and Escalators from "Sailor Mouth" appears as an arcade game in the Softy Spitoon.
- SpongeBob wears his chef outfit from "Le Big Switch" and "Patrick's Staycation" during the Softy Spitoon scenes.
- The sweater that Ol' Blue Eyes wears is similar to the eyelash sweater SpongeBob gives to Squidward in the episode "Dying for Pie."
- Further confirming this is the bruiser shark's Softy Spitoon model sheet, labeling a picture from a segment as inspiration.
Cultural references[]
- Many outfits of the Spitoon's members are inspired by various other types of media:
- Hammerhead Delinquent's Salty Spitoon outfit was inspired by the main character from the 1955 film Rebel Without a Cause.[1]
- Two customers wear the same clothes as Tweedle-Dee and Tweedle Dum from the 1951 Walt Disney movie, Alice in Wonderland.[1]
- One of the incidentals in the Softy Spitoon is dressed very similarly to SpongeBob in the SpongeBob SquarePants Musical.
- A model sheet of the character further confirmed this, using a picture of SpongeBob in the musical as inspiration, and labeling him as a "Sponge-Fan."[1]
- The Tattoo Thug's Softy Spitoon clothing was inspired by Little Lord Fauntleroy.[1]
- Capt'n Humboldt's dress is inspired by the one Belle wore in the 1991 Walt Disney film, Beauty and the Beast, as well as its 2017 remake.[1]
- Mrs. Sally Spitoon's outfit is similar to that of Minnie Mouse, one of the six main characters from the "Mickey Mouse" franchise created by The Walt Disney Company.
- A chair identical to the "froggy chair" from the Animal Crossing video game franchise can be seen in the Softy Spitoon.
- When SpongeBob declares that he's going to make changes to the Salty Spitoon, he imitates the late actor and comedian Don Knotts.
Errors[]
- SpongeBob's mailbox appears to be missing in the opening, but it appears in the next scene.
- In the far-out shot of the Krusty Krab, SpongeBob's mouth is not seen moving when he is talking.
- The urchins on the sign only appear in the second shot.
- When SpongeBob finds out that the Krusty Krab is closed on account of urchins, the Chum Bucket and its path across the street are missing.
- While the road to Weenie Hut Jr's is seen after the Softy Spitoon redesign, it disappears at the end of the episode.
- In the Polish dub, the Softy Spitoon song is completely instrumental except for puppet eel's line.[22]
