"Ride Patrick Ride" is a SpongeBob SquarePants episode from season 13. In this episode, SpongeBob teaches Patrick how to ride a bike.

Characters[]

Synopsis[]

Ride Patrick Ride 003

SpongeBob at Patrick's house.

The episode begins with SpongeBob riding a bike to Patrick's rock to greet him and invite him for a bike ride. Patrick does not have a bike, but Gary manages to find a spare one in SpongeBob's garage. Patrick tries to ride the bike, but he does not know how to, so SpongeBob agrees to teach him. He uses various methods to help Patrick get on the bike, but Patrick continuously struggles to do so.

SpongeBob balances Patrick's brain, and he is able to get on the bike afterwards. SpongeBob helps Patrick pedal, but his hands remain on the bike while he is away from Patrick, resulting in Patrick crashing into SpongeBob's garage. SpongeBob then tries to help Patrick focus by riding ahead of him with a Krabby Patty, but Patrick ends up falling after he eats it.

SpongeBob and Patrick are soon shown on a tandem bicycle, with SpongeBob showing Patrick how to pedal. SpongeBob asks Patrick if he can pedal faster, but Patrick pedals so fast that the two ride out of control and crash into Mrs. Puff and Mr. Krabs, as well as Squidward. SpongeBob asks Mrs. Puff for advice on teaching Patrick, but Mrs. Puff tells SpongeBob that some students are unteachable, which unintentionally gives SpongeBob the idea to "unteach" Patrick by clearing his brain.

Ride Patrick Ride 170

Patrick riding down Dead Man's Hill.

SpongeBob clears Patrick's brain of several aspects of his knowledge — such as brushing his teeth, watching TV, putting on his pants, and his family — to make room for bike riding. SpongeBob prepares a bike-riding memory for Patrick. When Patrick is about to ride the bike, SpongeBob tells him to have fun, but this clashes with the bike-riding memory, resulting in Patrick forgetting how to ride a bike. Patrick slides away and ends up riding down Dead Man's Hill, managing to make it to the bottom. Patrick is then shown in several instances of riding throughout Bikini Bottom, helping people in the process. Patrick's favors result in him receiving Ms. Mayor's key to the town.

Patrick is later shown in the hospital, where it is revealed that he crashed on Dead Man's Hill and ended up in a six-week coma meaning all the instances were dreams. SpongeBob expresses his regret at not being able to teach Patrick how to reveal a bike, but Patrick reveals that he is a bike himself, and he and SpongeBob ride out of the hospital and crash, with SpongeBob claiming that he doesn't know how to "ride a Patrick."

Production[]

This episode was confirmed by Cartoonlounge.de on December 20, 2022.[4]

Art[]

Character and prop design[]

  • Patrick's "bike monstrosity" was boarded by Jeff Shea, with the final designs by character designer Shakeh Haghnazarian and prop designer Isaac Marzioli[5] and color design by John John Bajet.[6] Final designs for the cyclist sailfish and sardine jockeys by Stephanie Gladden.[1] Everything else is known to be designed by Ian Vazquez.[5]

Storyboards[]

  • Rough boards by Fred Osmond[7] and other rough doodles by Ian Vazquez.[8] Plussed by Kyle Morrison[9] and Jeff Shea,[3] with the tooth-combing sequence largely done by Ian Vazquez.[10]

Production notes[]

Kyle Morrison:

  • Morrison said that drawing bikes were difficult for them, and invisible bikes were even harder to draw during the opening sequence of this episode.[9]
  • Patrick's line "Check out this sweet ride!" is one of Morrison's favorite moments in the episode, with his eyes full of wonder. Morrison enjoys drawing Patrick's childlike innocence whenever it comes up.[11]
  • Lots of acting went into plussing the acting for Patrick's line "I'm going to be an icicle mist!"[12]
  • Considering Morrison's difficulties with drawing bikes and the crazy bike-related shenanigans of Patrick throughout the episode, they couldn't complain drawing a simply stationary bike. The nonstop, no-break montage of Patrick failing to stay still on his cycle was the toughest sequence to board, but they were satisfied with how of Patrick's on-bike poses turned out.[13]
  • Morrison said that Patrick's tooth combing was largely plussed by Ian Vazquez, and the Patrick expression found at the end of said scene was kept from the rough boards.[10]
  • Morrison stated that the scene in which a goofy-looking SpongeBob tells Pat he's ready ride was not boarded to be animated that fast, but they were glad it was.[14] They later said that the speed of the face found in the final episode was completely intentional, and they were all for it.[10]

Fred Osmond:

  • Osmond believed that "supervising director Ian Vazquez and team did an excellent job as always plussing this board," and the episode had a "super funny script by super funny writer Luke Brookshier."[7] He said that the middle section of the episode was boarded by "the super talented Dan Becker."[2]

Ian Vazquez:

  • Vazquez stated that drawing bikes were hard, but Patrick's bike monstrosity was seen as a "beast in his eyes." He said that "Jeff Shea did a fantastic job drawing this contraption in the board, and so did character designer Shakeh Haghnazarian and prop designer Isaac Marzioli on the final version!"[5]
  • Vazquez always liked paddle-bikes the best, but due to not believing it would fit in the context of this episode, he and the crew sprinkled them in where they could, one of them being SpongeBob's from "The Secret Box."[15]
  • Vazquez used his new design for Squid's recumbent bike rather than the old design seen in the first movie, saying "because I liked how much more that one leaned back. This rough's not the best but...it was legally distinct alright!"[16]
  • Vazquez stated that when Patrick's biking antics were moved from a random playground to Jellyfish Fields, it was simplified to a "doomed family picnic."[8]
  • Vazquez always wanted to get sardines on the show, and couldn't find what better way to introduce them by creating sardine jockeys. To quote himself, "Last, the Sardine Jockeys! I've wanted to get sardines on the show (they are different from anchovies but their characteristics are the opposite in real life) and what better job for these tiny guys?"[1]

Jeff Shea:

  • Shea said it was fun to do the scene in which Patrick rode down Dead Man's Hill, believing that the "downhill freefall point-of-view ruled."[3]

Trivia[]

General[]

  • This episode was initially called "Ride Patrick, Ride!" - with a comma between "Patrick" and the second "Ride." The exclamation point was also removed.
    • Supervising director Ian Vazquez referenced the original title's name scheme when posting a thread production artwork from this episode.[5]
  • This episode's ending is similar to that of "Driven to Tears," in which that Patrick receives a part of a vehicle (being a car license in the former, and the body of a bike in the latter) and then SpongeBob rides away on Patrick, ready to endure another adventure.
  • Similar to how Zeus Cervas was uncredited in the opening credits for Shanghaied, Dan Becker would also be uncredited, most likely due to Fred Osmond working on most of the episode.
  • This episode is the second instance where SpongeBob teaches Patrick how to ride a bike. The first one is the short "Bike Safety Tips."
  • This is the first episode of the main series since "My Two Krabses" to not premiere on a Friday, due to the start of AfterToons.
  • This episode was originally scheduled to premiere on Friday, April 14, 2023 in the United States at 7:00 PM, but got replaced with a rerun of the 2020 Paramount Pictures film Sonic the Hedgehog.[17]
  • Patrick's family from The Patrick Star Show and one of the cyclists from "House Hunting" both make appearances in this episode.

A clip from this episode is seen at 39:38.

  • Before its premiere date in the United States, a clip from this episode at the 39 minutes and 38 seconds mark was used in a compilation video called "SpongeBob UnderPants 👖 Every Underwater Underwear Moment" uploaded by the SpongeBob SquarePants Official YouTube channel on April 23, 2023.
  • A few changes were made to the segment during production:
    • A child incidental fish was to ride a tricycle at some point during the episode.[16]
    • Patrick was going to ride through a playground rather than Jellyfish Fields.[8]
    • SpongeBob's wide-eyed expression when stating that Patrick's ready to ride a bike was animated faster than intended when it was boarded.[14]

Episode references[]

  • A cave dweller makes a reappearance in the series following their long hiatus after "Chum Caverns," although they have appeared in online games. Unlike their original season 6 debut, however, the dweller is purple instead of their traditional orange.

  • When SpongeBob is cleaning out Patrick's brain, Patrick's zooming eyes from "Chocolate with Nuts" return while he's watching television.
    • Character poses from The Patrick Star Show promotional art also appear when SpongeBob gets rid of Patrick's memories of his family.
  • The mom octopus from "Sailor Mouth" reappears in this episode, reading a book while her kids ride their bikes, and is later seen at the hospital, suffering from Patrick's irresponsible cycling.

The "FUN" letters.

F.U.N

The original letters before being referenced.

  • SpongeBob tells Patrick to have "FUN" while riding a bike, and the text seen going into his brain is the same as the ones seen in "F.U.N."
  • A few of the stuffed animals from "Skill Crane" appear in SpongeBob’s garage.
  • The bike that SpongeBob uses in this episode is the one that he used during a friendship flashback montage with him and Patrick in "The Secret Box."[15]
    • The bike that Gary lends Patrick is the one that SpongeBob boiled when he forgets to do stuff in "Pickles."[15]
  • Squidward's recumbent bike from The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie returns, although slightly altered and "legally distinct," likely to avoid a similar issue during pre-season 10 in which nothing from the movie could be shown due to Paramount Global owning the movie, and not Viacom themselves.[16]
