The Popeye fish,[1][2][3] also known as Thug 1, the sailor fish,[4] and Prisoner 10 is a minor character who first appears in the episode "No Weenies Allowed."

Description[]

He is a large, muscular, light grayish-brown fish with a dark brown shark-like dorsal fin who wears a navy blue speedo and a gray sailor's hat. He has yellow eyes, a scar above his left eye, and stubble on his chin. He has very short legs in contrast to the rest of his body. Thug 1 has the same appearance as his normal variant.

He wears a black and white striped prisoner's uniform with a cap.

Personality[]

The Popeye fish has a consistent personality where he regularly has a stereotypical tough guy attitude. He also has a consistent voice as well.

Role in series[]

The Popeye fish has made quite a large number of appearances throughout the series. He is usually portrayed as a tough and muscular fish that is usually seen among other tough and muscular fish. He can commonly be seen at establishments for tough patrons such as The Salty Spitoon and other bars. He was firstly designed to be a patron at The Salty Spitoon.

He is seen standing in front of The Salty Spitoon, waiting in line. He reveals to Reg that he ate a bowl of nails for breakfast earlier in the morning without any milk, which proves him tough enough to enter the bar.

Plankton asks him and a group of other fish to be his henchmen to steal the Krabby Patty secret formula. He and the other group of fish end up stepping on Plankton, causing him to return to the Chum Bucket in a wheelchair with a cast and bandages.

He is one of the tough people who run away from the Tough Tavern when SpongeBob asks if any of them could be his bodyguard to protect him from the Tattletale Strangler.

He appears as a gladiator with the finback fish where they tie the string of sausages around Patrick's neck.

He is one of the bikers who chase Patrick after he accidentally knocks their bikes over but when SpongeBob convince the biker to forgive Patrick, the Popeye fish gives Patrick a friendly handshake of forgiveness before SpongeBob accidentally knocks over their bikes again.

He is one of the many tough fish who attempt to beat Champ 1 and Champ 2 at a wrestling match, but he fails.

"Grandpappy the Pirate"[]

He appears as part of Mr. Krabs' old pirate crew that ends up getting fired by him shortly.

Mr. Krabs and Gary steal his change. When SpongeBob comes looking for them, the Popeye fish tells SpongeBob that they had stolen his change and refers to them as "criminals."

The Popeye fish bumping into the greaser fish.

He is part of the stage crew of Kelpy G's concert where he and the greaser fish try to catch Patrick onstage.

He appears as a demolition driver in Mrs. Puff's imagination where he and the other drivers kill SpongeBob by crashing into him.

He is seen weightlifting with other muscular fish at Goo Lagoon.

He is seen as a horrified patron of the Howlin Marlin in The Sharks' retelling of what happened to Jonnie.

He laughs at Patrick when he asks for his mother to pick him up from prison, and tells him about the cafeteria. He is impressed by Patrick's abilities to eat the prison food trays, making literal bread by betting with other prisoners. He has a sleepover in Patrick's cell, and teams up with another prisoner to tunnel out from it in the morning. The Popeye fish tries to escape through the tunnel Patrick makes, but ends up being caught by the prison guards.

He and the greaser fish get into a fight at the Salty Spitoon.

He appears during the "Jailhouse Workout" song. Bunny shows him a technique for lifting, and he escapes his cell.
