"Plankton Paranoia" is a SpongeBob SquarePants episode from season eleven. In this episode, Plankton hasn't tried to steal the secret formula in a while... and that's making Mr. Krabs nervous.

Mr. Krabs is asking SpongeBob and Squidward to keep their eyes peeled as it is the day that Plankton tries to steal the formula. However, after an extended period of time, he finds out Plankton has not come yet, so he tries to make an obvious path to bait Plankton. However, Plankton still does not come and Patrick activates a false alarm by confusing the formula bottle as ketchup.

SpongeBob and Squidward try to leave for the day but Mr. Krabs encourages them to stay and keep an eye on Plankton, but they sneak out after he is distracted. Mr. Krabs stays up all night but Plankton still does not come, and he starts to become paranoid himself. He mistakes a customer for Plankton and forces out the skeleton, hooks Mrs. Puff to take away her Krabby Patty, and forces everyone to wear barrels by suggestion of Squidward. Mr. Krabs bans all of his customers, Sandy, and even SpongeBob and Squidward just because he thinks that they are all minions of Plankton to hunt over the secret formula.

Mr. Krabs stays up all night again, and starts to hallucinate Plankton being everywhere (even his eyestalks). He checks on the Chum Bucket and finds that all of his friends, his daughter, and Old Man Jenkins are entering the Chum Bucket. SpongeBob informs Mr. Krabs that Plankton kidnapped Squidward (in an unnatural-sounding tone), and Mr. Krabs comes armed with Krabby Patties with traps in them.

Mr. Krabs comes to the Chum Bucket, thinking it’s a evil plot only to find it is a surprise party and that Plankton wanted to celebrate the anniversary of stealing the formula. SpongeBob explains everyone was planning the event, as Mr. Krabs regains his sanity and realizes that he had been a paranoid jerk all this time. He even realizes that his own insane behavior nearly destroyed his restaurant business and reconciles with everyone by apologizing for his cruel behavior, but since they knew that he was only trying to protect the secret formula, they naturally forgive him. However, when he sees everyone going to eat the Danger Patties, he rushes over and takes them back in order to protect them from getting hurt, causing Mr. Krabs to get painfully mauled by the patties as punishment for his behavior.

At the end of the party, the group leaves Chum Bucket, but Plankton finds out Mr. Krabs left the formula behind. However, the formula bottle has dynamite inside of it, and Mr. Krabs and SpongeBob both watch the Chum Bucket explode as the episode ends.

The episode was confirmed by Vincent Waller on March 26, 2018.[1]

  • In the storyboard art, Mrs. Puff is wearing bloomers. However, in the final product, she isn't wearing them.
  • This episode marks the first usage of the APM track "Killer Birds" since "The Main Drain" and the first usage of "Wahini Wobble" since "Snail Mail."
  • This is the second episode to have Mr. Krabs on the title card, as well as Plankton. The first is "Friend or Foe."
    • Although, they were depicted as a drawing on the title card for "Oral Report."
  • This is the second episode to have a close-up of a character's eyes on the title card. The first is "InSPONGEiac."
    • Mr. Krabs' pupils on this title card are silhouettes of Plankton.
  • Mr. Krabs owns a wristwatch of him smashing Plankton with a wooden mallet.
  • The scene where Mr. Krabs turns blue and sees Plankton everywhere is a reference to the episode "Squeaky Boots." They even use the same music.
  • Mr. Krabs and Mrs. Puff's relationship is mentioned in this episode, as she calls him by his real name.

Cultural references

  • The scene where Mr. Krabs bans everything from the Krusty Krab with a rubber stamp is similar to a scene from the Chowder episode "Banned from the Stand." Chowder creator C.H. Greenblatt worked on SpongeBob SquarePants, so it's possible they're paying homage to one of their former staff and his show.
  • When Mr. Krabs runs while several red Planktons surround him, it mirrors a scene from Disney's The Hunchback of Notre Dame during the song Hellfire, where Judge Claude Frollo is running from red, hooded figures.

  • At the end, Mr. Krabs has a cast on his eye, but in the next shot of him, it disappears.

On the right side his right eye being wrapped by a cast, on the right side his right eye is without a cast.

  • In the episode "Plankton!" (when SpongeBob meets Plankton for the first time), Mr. Krabs claims that Plankton tried to steal the secret formula for years, and in "Plankton's Army," he said it was the 25th anniversary, but in this episode (SpongeBob knows Plankton), Plankton claims that it has been a year since he tried to steal the secret formula.
    • However, it could be that Plankton meant a yearly event of stealing the formula.
  • Mr. Krabs states that he and Plankton take their vacations together but in "Bucket Sweet Bucket," he is clearly seen taking a vacation alone.

Running gags

  • Mr. Krabs overreacting about everything that involves Plankton.
  • Mr. Krabs stamping "BANNED" on characters.
  • Squidward getting injured by SpongeBob with the mop or other things
  • Mr. Krabs being injured by fireworks.
