Video game

Plankton's Robotic Revenge is a SpongeBob SquarePants video game published by Activision and developed by Behaviour Interactive. The game was released on October 22, 2013, and is a 3D graphics game.

Cast

Plot

The game's story begins on a military cargo ship. The ship's captain realizes his radio's batteries are low, so he orders an ensign to get him some fresh batteries. The ensign goes to retrieve the batteries, but accidentally trips and drops the batteries into the ocean. The batteries sink downward to Bikini Bottom and land right in front of the Chum Bucket. Plankton emerges to take out the trash, only to discover the batteries scattered all over his yard. He then gets the idea to take all the batteries and use their power to create an entire robot army, as well as several giant battle mechs for himself and his family. With his new mech, Plankton heads over to the Krusty Krab and demands that the Krabby Patty Secret Formula be surrendered to him. Mr. Krabs, naturally, won't give in, but that doesn't deter Plankton, who proceeds to steal the safe with the formula inside, along with a map that shows the location of three keys that unlock the safe. However, SpongeBob and his friends agree to team up with Mr. Krabs to fight Plankton's army and stop him and his cousins from finding the keys.

Gameplay

This game is a third-person co-op shooter, similar to Ratchet & Clank: All 4 One. Players can buy and upgrade weapons on some places using a gizmo. The game features a four-player co-op game, whilst the Wii U version will allow for an additional fifth player when using a GamePad with four other controllers. Portable versions are only played with a single player.

Game renders of the playable characters (excluding Plankton).

Playable characters

Character Moves

  • Melee Attack
  • Ground Slam
  • Super Power: When the player(s) acquire enough energy to fill the pink Energy Bar, they can activate their character's Super Power! Each character has a different Super Power that provides a bonus effect for a short while.
    • SpongeBob: Becomes invincible.
    • Patrick: Ground Slams deal double damage to enemies.
    • Squidward: Gizmo attacks deal double damage to enemies.
    • Sandy: Melee attacks deal double damage to enemies.
    • Mr. Krabs: Sprockets are worth twice as much.

Gizmos

SpongeBob Gizmos

All 7 Gizmos

  • Pickle Blaster: Shoots pickles that do great damage to enemies.
  • Condiment Cannon: Shoots globs of ketchup, mustard, and relish at a really fast rate.
  • Portable Tartar Sauce: Shoots a consistent stream of tartar sauce. Especially effective against bosses.
  • Reef Blower: Blows gusts of air that damage enemies at close range.
  • Neptuning Fork: Shoots electric bolts that spread out.
  • Bubblegum Blaster: Launches exploding gumballs.
  • Exploding Pie Launcher: Launches exploding pies.

Levels

Enemies

  • Plankton's Freaky Robot Battle Suits (Boss)
  • Rainchild's robot suit (Boss)
  • Clem's robot suit (Boss)
  • Scout: A tiny, round robot that just wanders around aimlessly.
  • Super Scout: A larger version of the Scout which is more aggressive and actively chases after the player(s).
  • Turret: Is unable to move, but can shoot lasers.
  • Mortar: Shoots bombs instead of lasers.
  • Buzzbot: A buzz saw protrudes from the Buzzbot's body, deflecting all melee and gadget attacks as it charges towards the player(s).  The only way to defeat one is to ground-pound the green button on its head.
  • Rocket-Bot: Will attack by trying to ram into the player(s) at a very high speed, but becomes dizzy after the attack.  The attack can be dodged by jumping over the Rocket-Bot.
  • Landmine: Landmines are stationary enemies that self-destruct if you step inside the red circle around them.
  • Floating Mine: Floating Mines float in the air, and only explode if a player makes direct contact with them.
  • Tar Cannon: Instead of lasers, shoots sticky tar that can trap the player(s).
  • Electrobot: Electrobots are basically Super Scouts whose bodies are electrified, so they can't be touched at all or else the player will receive damage.
  • Buzzgunner: Basically a Buzzbot that is armed with guns as well as a buzz saw, so it is able to fire lasers as it chases after the player(s).

DS

Playable characters

Enemies

  • Plankton's Giant Robot Suit (Boss)
  • Super Scout
  • Buzzbot (In this version these can only be destroyed by gadget attacks)
  • Turret
  • Electric Barrier: Blocks off an area and deals damage when players touch it. Must be deactivated by hitting a switch somewhere in the stage.
  • Sentry: Basically a Turret that only fires in one direction.
  • Rocket-bot
  • Floating Mine
  • Aerobot: Aerobots are just Super Scouts that can hover over pitfalls to pursue the player(s).
  • Elite Turret: Fires spread shots instead of just a single bullet.
  • Gatling Turret: Fires bullets more rapidly than a normal Turret.

The DS version is a lot more limited movement-wise compared to the console version as the player cannot jump at will, but the player automatically jumps when he or she moves their character off the edge of a cliff. Along with that, this version has only 4 gizmos compared to the console and 3DS versions which has 7 gizmos. The music is also lower quality due to the limitations of the DS.

Reception

Plankton's Robotic Revenge received mixed to negative reviews from critics. According to the aggregating review website, GameRankings gave the PS3 version 42.50%,[1] the Wii U version 40.00%,[2] and the 3DS version 60.00%.[3] While the game was panned for it's slowly developed gameplay, the return of the original voice actors were praised.

IGN panned the game with a score of 3.5 out of 10.[4] GamingBolt rated the game 7 out of 10.[5]

Plankton's Robotic Revenge was not a great success, with 421,000 copies sold across all platforms, so far.[citation needed]

Music

Some of the APM used in the TV show (and theme song) was used in this game including:

Sleepy Time 057
"I can turn into a skyscraper!"
This section is too short. You can help Encyclopedia SpongeBobia by expanding it.

Trivia

  • The Wii and DS versions of this game can also be played on the Wii U and 3DS since both consoles are backwards compatible with Wii and DS games
  • This is the first SpongeBob game that has an ESRB rating other than E. This time, it is rated E10+.
    • However, the DS version has a rating of E for "Everyone."
  • This is the first SpongeBob game available for PlayStation 3 and Wii U.
    • However, it is not the first SpongeBob game playable on those systems because all of the SpongeBob games for the Wii are compatible with the Wii U, and the PS versions of SuperSponge and Nicktoons Racing can be played on the launch model of the PS3.
  • This is the first SpongeBob SquarePants video game to be published by Activision, due to THQ's bankruptcy in 2013.
  • This game was released ten years after Battle for Bikini Bottom was released.
  • This was the last SpongeBob game released for the Wii and Nintendo DS.
  • This is the second SpongeBob game that one can play as Mr. Krabs and Squidward in a console fighting game. Although, one could consider Squidward being used by Sandy in the SpongeBob's Atlantis SquarePantis level, Squidward Super Shooter, as counting as him being played in a console fighting game. One could also argue Squidward being a power-up in SpongeBob's Truth or Square counts as him being playable.

  • In the level Conch Street, if the player looks down of a hill before getting chased by Plankton's robot on the last bridge, you'll find SpongeBob's, Patrick's, and Squidward's houses.
  • The fourth level of Dutchman's Triangle is named after Davy Jones who died on February 29, 2012, one before this game was released.
  • In one of the levels, one of the robots will be nice and not shoot you. This may just be a glitch though.
  • In the DS version, the player does not get chased by Plankton on the bridge.
  • Karen does not make a physical appearance in this game, but she is heard speaking on the main menu screen and in the game's intro cutscene.
  • One of the gizmos in the game is the Exploding Pie Launcher. This may be a reference to the Exploding Pie from the episode "Dying for Pie."
  • As of April 2016, this game and SpongeBob HeroPants have been removed from Xbox Live, PlayStation Store, and Nintendo eShop.
  • The PlayStation 3 version supports up to 720p HD resolution, while the Xbox 360 and Wii U versions support up to 1080p HD resolution. The Wii version is 480p standard-definition like every other game on the console.
  • The game borrows a similar currency that is used in the Ratchet & Clank franchise.
