Synopsis

The Krusty Krab hasn't had a customer in 36 days, and is shown to be filled with cobwebs and even a skeleton. Dave crawls in, claiming that he hasn't had any food or a drink in 3 days. SpongeBob immediately gives him a meal, but he refuses, saying that there's no theme in the Krusty Krab, and resumes his search for food and atmosphere. Mr. Krabs overhears a conversation between Tom and Fred about a talking dog at the Shell Shack, and realizes that he needs a gimmick to attract customers. SpongeBob tries to give him an idea, but is cut off by Mr. Krabs, who decides to bury himself alive in front of a crowd that leaves him when news of the now singing dog reaches them.

SpongeBob is ignored by Mr. Krabs for a while, but appears flying above his head saying he has an idea to get his attention. When Mr. Krabs asks what the idea is, Spongebob shows him a green patty. Mr. Krabs is disgusted thinking that the patty is spoiled and tries to throw it away. SpongeBob interrupts him saying that "It's not tainted meat, it's painted meat" and gives him an idea: "Pretty Patties," which are Krabby Patties, painted in "six designer colors". Squidward and Mr. Krabs laugh at him, and say that it's a terrible idea. They even create other ideas such as "sequined milkshakes" and "bow-tied french fries" to mock SpongeBob, which angers him. He decides to "show them" by setting up his own restaurant, shouting that to Mr. Krabs and Squidward as he walks out the door. Mr. Krabs and Squidward appear shocked at first, but reveal that they are not when they start laughing again.

SpongeBob leaves the Krusty Krab and sets up a stand in front of his house selling Pretty Patties, with Patrick, which is initially unsuccessful. He tries to give Harold a Pretty Patty, who laughs at that. SpongeBob is about to give up, when Harold sees a purple Patty, his favorite color, and proclaims Pretty Patties to be the best idea ever. Following this, sales skyrocket.

Mr. Krabs sees this on the news and decides to take a look. There are thousands of customers surrounding the stand, shouting loudly. The reporter asks customers why they like Pretty Patties so much and receives various replies such as "They match our purses" from three female fish with Patties the same color has their purses and "They remind me of home" from a Scottish looking fish with a red and green plaid Patty. Mr. Krabs notes that he never had a line before. The order number ticks and SpongeBob asks who the 46,853rd customer causing everyone to shout. Mr. Krabs says that he's never had 46,853 customers. With SpongeBob having a large sum of money, the reporter asks SpongeBob what he and Patrick did with all of it. SpongeBob says that at first they tried burying it (shocking Mr. Krabs), shredding it (saddening Mr. Krabs even more) and burning it (finally causing Mr. Krabs' head to explode). He then tells the reporter that he and Patrick decided to just give it all away and it cuts to a scene where Patrick's stall (which now says "Free Money") is giving away money to the customers. SpongeBob says he misses the Krusty Krab, so Mr. Krabs hurries over and gives him the key to it in exchange for the stall so that he could make a lot of money. At the Krusty Krab, SpongeBob is overjoyed and starts playing with and looking at everything he thought was nice about it.

The next day, as Mr. Krabs is ready to make money, the customers all angrily arrive and start to explain that the Pretty Patties had the side effect of turning them into their colors, with the first customer whose face turned purple, the Scottish fish having red and green plaid buttocks, and three customers with colored tongues. Mr. Krabs asks what's wrong with the third fish's tongue, and he pulls a switch to turn off a light revealing it is glow-in-the-dark. He says that all 46,853 of the customers want their money back. The customers form an angry mob which begins chasing Mr. Krabs, leaving colorful paths behind them. The episode ends with Mr. Krabs begging SpongeBob to let him into the Krusty Krab, with SpongeBob being too distracted by the sound of the squeaky pickles rubbed together to hear him.

Trivia

Template:Trivia

  • Pretty Patties come in a different variety of colors, such as:
    • Red
    • Blue
    • Yellow
    • Green
    • Purple
    • Orange
    • Plaid
    • Glow in the dark
  • There are eight Pretty Patties on the title card.
  • When a customer comes to the Krusty Krab, SpongeBob still looks like the Krusty Krab (gross and filthy), and Mr. Krabs is bright red like he should be.
  • The Pretty Patties loosely resemble the popular French dessert known as Macarons.
  • When SpongeBob is cleaning the Krusty Krab near the end, the drive-through window also seen in "Driven to Tears" is shown.
  • Tom's and Fred's names are both revealed in this episode.
  • Various episodes show Bikini Bottom to have anywhere from no people to over 500 people living there. Many surrounding cities must have had to come to Bikini Bottom to obtain a pretty patty as there was over 46,852 customers.
  • On the Krusty Krab window, along with the picture of a Krabby Patty, there are also pictures of fries and a soda. In other episodes, there is only the Krabby Patty poster.
  • Like some fish food, especially goldfish food, Pretty Patties change the color of the fish that eat it.
  • The Comcast description of this episode refers to Pretty Patties as "colored crab cakes."
  • This episode has become a popular YouTube Poop.
    • The scene where Mr. Krabs uses a flamethrower to destroy a Pretty Patty also became popular on YouTube.
  • This episode was Japan under the title Suponji Shigoto, which means "Sponge Job."
  • An image of Mr. Krabs selling Pretty Patties with a motion blur filter on it has gone viral.
  • 46,853 (forty-six thousand, eight hundred fifty-three) is a five-digit prime number.
  • The color green seems to be pretty common in this episode as it was used as the main color for the background of the title card, SpongeBob had more green patties shown than any other patty, all of the money he and Patrick earned (and gave away), and the green glow-in-a-dark tongue of the customer.
  • Mr. Krabs buried himself alive different species of crab do this all the time. Two examples are the Stone Crab and Hermit Crab.

Cultural references

  • Mr. Krabs exclaims "No one goes to a restaurant for atmosphere. They go for food!," which seems like a reference to the cult classic, Office Space (1999). Also, 36 days could be a reference to the pieces of flair Brian wears (37).

Errors

  • Frank mentions that there are 46853 customers who want their money back, but there should be more because that is the number of customers that SpongeBob had when Mr. Krabs arrived and because there were a lot more customers waiting.
  • In earlier showings of this episode, SpongeBob's first customer eats a blue patty. Now, he eats a purple patty.
    File:Mrs. Puff in Patty Hype.png

    Mrs. Puff?

  • Mrs. Puff was seen in this episode standing in the back of the crowd. She was very skinny, her hair was longer and she didn't have any lines or movement. Her dress changed from solid blue to red with a blue collar several times.
  • Before SpongeBob gets interviewed, on the aerial view of their stand, SpongeBob and Patrick are just heads without bodies, behind their stand. During the interview, however, they are in front of their stand, full body.
  • After Mr. Krabs comes to see SpongeBob, Patrick's stand is no longer seen and Patrick is not seen for the rest of the episode.
  • When Mr. Krabs hands SpongeBob the key, the fish that are in the background aren't blinking or moving.
  • In Tom's first appearance in this episode, he is light green. But when Mr. Krabs is burying himself alive, Tom can be seen in the crowd in his normal, darker color.
  • They didn't need to chase Mr. Krabs for their money back because they were able to collect it for free before. Knowing Mr. Krabs, he probably didn't give their money back and took it home with him.
  • Mr. Krabs says that he has never had a line before, though there is a line at the Krusty Krab (in front of where Squidward works).
  • When the fish gets the free money, he says that he is going back in line. However, he runs off in the other direction. He could have meant that he was going back in line to buy more Pretty Patties.
  • At the beginning of the episode with the fish that crawls into the Krusty Krab, he says he needs food and water. He would only need food because he is already underwater so he isn't dehydrated.
  • Mr. Krabs' flamethrower has no trigger.
  • Some of the fish in the crowd were seen twice. Nat Peterson however is seen 3 times.
  • In other episodes, Tom is a brown fish, but in this episode he is an aqua fish.
  • When SpongeBob wakes up and says, "Patrick! How long have we been sitting here?" SpongeBob's pineapple vanished.
  • SpongeBob's hands are slightly bigger than normal in some shots.
