Patrick Star(born February 26, 1986) is a fictional character in the Nickelodeon animated television comedy SpongeBob SquarePants, voiced by Bill Fagerbakke. Patrick is an overweight pink sea star who lives under a rock and is SpongeBob’s best friend. Like his best friend, he tends to be extremely gullible and clueless (even to SpongeBob’s intentions), but remains a very loyal friend.

Character

Patrick's character is, in many respects, very similar to that of his best friend, SpongeBob. Both are very playful and childish, both are complete idiots, and both are troublesome annoyances to those around them. SpongeBob and Patrick also share most of the same interests, such as Jellyfishing and Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy. Spongebob and Patrick spend most of their free time together, and in a way, Patrick could be considered Spongebob's "Sidekick".

However, Patrick is far less capable and dynamic than SpongeBob. He has little to no practical skill: this is most notably shown in the episode "Big Pink Loser", in which Patrick struggles with such simple tasks as sweeping or opening a jar. This is also evident in "Pat No Pay", when even the most simple of tasks Mr. Krabs gives him prove to be extremely difficult for him to accomplish. Thus, Patrick's character could indeed be very well summed up as that of a "Big Pink Loser". In the earliest episodes, Patrick simply wears his trunks to bed. Later on, he appears in pajamas. In the some episodes, he is seen wearing underwear to bed, just like his friend SpongeBob.

While both annoyingly foolish and clueless, Patrick is shown to be far more dim-witted in terms of thought processing capacity, often failing to grasp the most basic of situations. At times, Patrick's stupidity is so potent that he suffers from lapses of memory (such as trying to eat a chocolate bar twice) and complete shutdown on any thought whatsoever. In an episode where he attempts to think up a song, it is shown that foul-smelling smoke leaks out of his head.

No Nose Knows.

Having no nose, Patrick has no(or it doesn't appear to)sense of smell; in "Something Smells", he is the only one who does not notice SpongeBob's horrible sundae breath, though he wore a clothespin over his nose to avoid smelling SpongeBob's "sick" breath in "The Suds". In "No Nose Knows", Patrick undergoes plastic surgery to get a nose, but becomes so overwhelmed by the all of the bad smells he encounters that he attempts to get rid of them all. In doing so, his interference in the lives of SpongeBob and friends eventually leads them to create a massive ball of garbage that smells so bad that Patrick's new nose "dies" but he does have two small nostrils that he uses to smell.

SpongeBob seems to be aware of Patrick's stupidity on some occasions. In "Hooky", when arguing about playing on the fishermen's hooks, Patrick asks "Are you gonna listen to a big dummy (referring to Mr. Krabs), or are you gonna listen to me?" and SpongeBob weakly responds with "Ummmmm..." In Grandma's Kisses, SpongeBob recalls three instances where Patrick suggested some stupid things. On other occasions, however, SpongeBob thinks that Patrick is smart. In the episodes Texas and Squidtastic Voyage, SpongeBob refers to Patrick as a genius. Patrick seems to be aware of his own stupidity; in "The Card", he states, "SpongeBob, you can't expect my normal garden-variety brand of stupidity. I like to mix it up, keep you on your toes."

Patrick's ideas are often responsible for getting SpongeBob and himself into troublesome situations, such as "alien hunting", sneaking into Sandy's Treedome in the winter in "Survival of the Idiots", riding on fishing hooks, and many other situations.

Appearance

Patrick is pink and chubby, with black eyes and purple eyelids. Being a starfish, he has a tall pointed head and pointed limbs lacking any discernible fingers or toes, although in "The Battle of Bikini Bottom", he is jokingly shown to have fingers, his supposed hands actually being fingerless gloves. Patrick's only regular clothing is a green pair of swim trunks with purple flowers in the same design as those seen in the underwater sky. Patrick is naked in quite a few episodes like Pranks a lot, and Rise and Shine, and the Spongebob Squarepants movie.

Education

Very little is known of Patrick's education, However, it is mentioned in the episode "The Bully" that Patrick attened college with Flats the Flounder. In lesser education, Patrick attends Mrs. Puff's Boating School in the episodes, "New Student Starfish" and "Driven to Tears". However, this was only because he was lonely and wanted to be with Spongebob. Patrick is actually quite talented in driving a boatmobile, as shown in "Driven to Tears". In "Sing a Song of Patrick", Patrick mentions his gym teacher. In "Naughty Nautical Neighbors" and "Squidward the Unfriendly Ghost", Patrick is shown to be able to administer C.P.R. Throughout the series, Patrick has had brief and random moments of intelligence on several occasions, which are often meant to be intentionally out of character for him. For example, in "Squidtastic Voyage", when they are trapped inside of Squidward's body, Patrick suggests capturing the CO2 in the ballast tanks, refiring the engine, and riding the shockwave out. When Sandy says that they will go through with his plan, Patrick, forgetting what he had just said, asks "What plan?" In "Frankendoodle", Patrick accurately criticizes SpongeBob's crude drawing of a jellyfish, implying an aptitude for art, and in "Patty Caper", he creates an abstract and surprisingly lifelike sketch of Squidward, further supporting this. In the episode Chimps Ahoy, Patrick was able to invent a portal to a parallel universe. This was his smartest side yet, although SpongeBob said it was just a mirror. Based on this information, he may have taken art, medical, and/or physics.

Occupation

Patrick has never had a long-standing occupation. However, he has had various jobs, mostly at the Krusty Krab. He has worked there a total of seven times: In the episodes "Arrgh!," "Big Pink Loser," "Squilliam Returns," "That's No Lady," "Bummer Vacation", "Banned in Bikini Bottom", and "Pat No Pay".

Patrick has also worked at the Chum Bucket twice. The first was in "The Fry Cook Games", in which he takes the job in order to be able to compete in the Fry Cook Games. The audience was at first fooled into thinking an enormous fish would be the competitor, when in reality he was only carrying the real contestant, Patrick Star (a parody of a scene in the film Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls). In a later episode, "Chum Bucket Supreme", Patrick becomes the slogan manager for the Chum Bucket and creates the catchphrase "CHUM IS FUM". In Rule of Dumb, Patrick was discovered to be of royal blood and briefly reigned as King of Bikini Bottom. However, this was a mistake, and the true heir to the throne was Gary (who is also revealed to be Patrick's cousin).

In the episode "Sing a Song of Patrick," Patrick takes advantage of a mail-in offer to have a song written by him recorded by a professional band. The song was so horrible that the band died.

Residence

File:ROCK.jpg

Patrick's rock house

Patrick lives under a rock, literally, on 124 Conch Street, two doors down from his best friend, right next to Squidward and 400-yards away from the Krusty Krab. The home's exterior is featureless, apart from a small yellow weather vane, which is shown falling off on numerous occasions.]]

Patrick is sometimes shown to sleep on the ceiling, although far more often he is shown sleeping in a traditional bed. Patrick spends much of his day sleeping under his rock. There are many inconsistencies in the depictions of his house due to the nature of the cartoon and utility treatment of backgrounds: in one episode, his house is depicted to be nothing but a bed and a chest of drawers, yet in others he appears to have a kitchen and a living room. Also, certain episodes tend to depict the surface below the rock to be completely flat, while in others there is a considerable amount of depth below it. Patrick claims to have built the house himself.

As Nickelodeon says of Patrick's house in a commercial bumper: "What's really beneath this famous rock? The home of Patrick Star. While the outside never changes, a closer look inside reveals that Patrick's house is never set in stone. Sometimes, there's just sand. Other times, there's a small den. Occasionally, there's a large master bedroom. And there's the Multi-Room Complex featuring an eat-in kitchen, arched doorways, and a hi-def TV. Rock on!"

Antagonistic Side

Although he is unintelligent and is usually carefree, magnanimous, and generally detached, Patrick has demonstrated a cold, shrewd, even sociopathic side at times.

In the episode "I'm with Stupid", SpongeBob volunteered to act stupid around Patrick's parents in an attempt to improve their opinion of Patrick. However, Patrick takes the act to far, to the point where he actually begins to believe that SpongeBob is that stupid. All the teasing and embarrassment from Patrick and his supposed "parents" eventually proves too much for SpongeBob, who runs away screaming and crashes through the wall of his house.

After SpongeBob fails to produce a gift for Patrick on "Valentine's Day" (which was in reality due to scallops attacking and stalling Sandy's chocolate balloon, which was his intended gift), he concludes that SpongeBob must hate him (especially after finding out that SpongeBob gave gifts to everyone else, including somebody he had just met that morning) and goes on a violent rampage throughout the carnival, eventually cornering everyone (including Spongebob and all the innocent bystanders) at the end of the boardwalk, seemingly with the intention of killing them. Once Sandy shows up and Patrick realizes that SpongeBob has indeed gotten him a gift, his anger is forgotten.

In the episode "Nature Pants" when SpongeBob decides to live away from home, a hurt and crazed Patrick attempts to capture him and keep him in a jar on his mantle. When SpongeBob escapes by jumping into the jellyfish hive, Patrick gives up, snaps his net in half, and walks home crying.

In the episode "Rock-a-Bye Bivalve", Patrick fails to do his fair share of work in taking care of the baby scallop, claiming that he is too tired from work. Each night, he promises to assume responsibility for the baby the following night, but repeatedly fails to do so. When Spongebob finds out that "work" consists of Patrick watching TV under his rock, he is furious. Patrick finally realizes the error of his ways when Spongebob shows him the obscene amount of diapers that he has to change.

In the episode "Driven to Tears", he attends Mrs. Puff's boating school, suspecting that Mrs. Puff was setting up SpongeBob's tests so he would constantly flunk, and passes almost effortlessly. Afterward, he rubs his license in SpongeBob's face every chance he gets, calling himself a "driving genius" (despite having ran red lights and made dangerous U-turns), and when SpongeBob finally gets sick of it and destroys his license, Patrick is arrested for littering and sentenced to prison time (which would never happen in real life). However, Spongebob confesses to the "crime" and takes Patrick's place in jail. The two friends reconcile when SpongeBob is released from prison.

In the episode "Rule of Dumb", Patrick is crowned King of Bikini Bottom and acts in a ruthless, despotic manner, thinking he has the right to take and use whatever he wants, regardless of what harm it brings to others, to the point of out and outright stealing. After weeks of ruining everyone's lives for his own personal gain, Patrick goes too far by hiring a construction crew to move Squidward's house in order to set up a Ferris wheel. Squidward starts a revolt against Patrick among the townspeople, and Patrick begins planning to kill (or so it seems)Squidward in order to show his power, even scaring SpongeBob away at this point. When Patrick looks into the mirror and sees a monstrous version of himself, he becomes horrified by what he has become, decides that friendship is more important than power, and happily abdicates the throne when it is discovered that he is not the true king.

Abilities

Similar to SpongeBob's super-human abilities of shapeshifting, duplication, invulnerability, and regeneration, Patrick has, in various episodes, shown to possess superpowers such as flight ("The Sponge Who Could Fly", "A Life in the Day") and superhuman strength ("The Battle of Bikini Bottom", "Suds", "Nature Pants", "Gift of Gum", "Valentines Day", and many others). In "Night Light", Patrick was able to climb up a ray of sunshine to reach the sun, which he mistook for a lightbulb, and runs back down with his behind on fire. In "Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy V", Patrick becomes "The Elastic Waistband" (A parody of Plastic Man), gaining the ability to stretch his body to incredible lengths, as part of Mermaid Man's International Justice League of Super Acquaintances .

Family

JanetandMarty

Marty and Janet(Patrick's fake parents)

Patrick's parents are first shown in "I'm With Stupid", although only at the end. A couple named Janet and Marty, presumed to be his parents, appear throughout the episode, but are at the end revealed to be confused imposters.

In "SB-129", "Patron", a distant descendant of Patrick with multiple heads, is shown in the future, and a savagely primitive ancestor of his is shown in prehistoric times. In contrast, Patar, the caveman version of Patrick seen in "Ugh" is distinctly different from the one in SB-129, being more evolved and similar to the present day Patrick in behavior.
