"New Digs" is a SpongeBob SquarePants episode from season 5. In this episode, SpongeBob moves into the Krusty Krab.

Synopsis

In the beginning of the episode, SpongeBob is getting ready for bed. However, he is so excited about going to work the next day that he cannot fall asleep. After speedily running around, it does not tire him. He drinks a glass of warm snail milk, which causes him to fall asleep within moments.

SpongeBob is one minute late to work.

The next morning, SpongeBob wakes up and finds out he overslept. He desperately rushes to get to the Krusty Krab (Additionally forgetting his left shoe behind), even jumping over an unfinished bridge that is over a cliff to get there on time. Right when he puts his employee timecard in the slot, the clock changes to 9:01 AM, making him one minute late. Worried that Mr. Krabs will punish him for being one minute late, SpongeBob begins working in overdrive to try and make up for his lost minute. Soon, Mr. Krabs notices his jumpiness and checks on him, but SpongeBob breaks down, telling Mr. Krabs that he was tardy, and he begs Mr. Krabs to not throw him out. Mr. Krabs does not scold him that much (even saying "Um... don't do it again."), but at SpongeBob's request, Mr. Krabs makes him clean the salad bar. Later when it is quitting time, Squidward sarcastically suggests to SpongeBob that he should live at the Krusty Krab if he loves it so much. That night, SpongeBob brings his bed to the Krusty Krab and sleeps there.

SpongeBob turns the Krusty Krab into his house.

The next morning, Mr. Krabs is shockingly startled by SpongeBob's bed. SpongeBob tells Mr. Krabs that he is going to live at the Krusty Krab from then on. When Squidward finds out, he is overjoyed. That night, SpongeBob brings all of his furniture to the Krusty Krab to make himself feel more at home.

The next morning, Squidward is thrilled that SpongeBob no longer lives next door to him. He happily tells the news to a customer. Later, when the customer asks Squidward for change, he gives him two socks and a pair of underwear. Squidward then notices the whole cash register is filled with socks and underwear. He asks SpongeBob why they are in there and where the money is. SpongeBob then says that the money is now being kept in a pickle jar. More socks and underwear are hanging up on a clothesline. A customer then takes a pair of underwear, thinking it is a napkin. SpongeBob then explains to Squidward that Gary has the mustard.

Later, SpongeBob moves his furniture into Mr. Krabs' office. He pleads Mr. Krabs to stay in his office, under the condition of raising rent. Then, SpongeBob's parents come to the Krusty Krab. Gary's trail of slime gets all over the floor and customers keep slipping on it and injuring themselves. Luckily, Gary is carrying a "wet floor" sign. A customer then tells SpongeBob about the "snail trail" incident, and SpongeBob becomes angry at Gary, blaming him for getting the slime all over the floor.

Soon after, SpongeBob wreaks havoc at the Krusty Krab after living there for a few more days. He ends up placing fancy smelling soaps in the bathroom, knitting napkin holders, and embroidering the menus, to the chagrin of Squidward and Mr. Krabs who believes SpongeBob is taking the manliness out of the Krusty Krab. Mr. Krabs becomes furious when he notices floral print shower curtains in his office. He threatens to tear them down, but when he does, he accidentally finds Margaret SquarePants taking a shower, apologizing to her. Outraged, Harold SquarePants comes in and angrily beats up Mr. Krabs who flees crazily. The customers leave the Krusty Krab in disgust when they find out SpongeBob is shaving Patrick's back hair in the kitchen and Mr. Krabs cries for his loss of customers. Fed up with SpongeBob's antics, an infuriated Mr. Krabs forces SpongeBob to move out of the Krusty Krab and go back to his pineapple house.

SpongeBob moves back to his house and plays his very loud drums, much to Squidward's dismay, who cries in agony. The next morning, Mr. Krabs returns to the Krusty Krab, but finds out that all of Squidward's stuff from his house is inside as he decided to live at the restaurant, so he won't have to have SpongeBob for a neighbor, much to the chagrin of Mr. Krabs who yells “SQUIDWARD!” ending the episode.

Production

This episode's pitch storyboard was completed on March 30, 2006. At the time, the animation director had not been decided.

Originally, there was going to be a scene where Gary either was shown being milked or the aftermath of being milked for the snail milk featured in this episode.

Both the scene where Mr. Krabs pulls the shower curtains and the scene where SpongeBob shaves Patrick's back were based on real stories from the crew.

9:00 AM is when the SpongeBob crew has to be at Nickelodeon Animation Studio.

Trivia

General

• This episode was available on the Bikini Bottom Adventures DVD, released on June 5, 2007, a month and a half before it aired on American television.
• In the 2012 drama mystery film Flight, a brief clip of this episode, the scene where SpongeBob drinks snail milk, is seen on television when the main character is changing the channel at a hotel room.
• In the audio commentary for the episode, some people state that this episode is the first time SpongeBob is late for work, however, this is actually not true.
• In real life, it is possible to live in a business place if that person owns it.
• A portion of SpongeBob snoring from “Plankton!” is reused when Mr. Krabs first discovers SpongeBob sleeping in the Krusty Krab.
• When SpongeBob reveals he put the money from the cash register in the pickle jar, Mr. Krabs laughs it off and tells Squidward it is "harmless tomfoolery." In other episodes, he freaks out when something happens to his money.
• When SpongeBob is singing the "Laundry Song," the music is the same one used for the title card.
• This is the second episode where SpongeBob has sleeping problems. The first is "Night Light."
  • On a side note, both episodes happen to feature SpongeBob wearing green PJs and a nightcap to bed instead of his underwear.
  • Also, both are season 5 episodes that premiered in 2007.
• This is the second appearance of the Krusty Krab's punch clock. The first is "SpongeBob Meets the Strangler."
  • Unlike the previous episode, SpongeBob inserts part of his slip instead of the entire slip, which is a proper way to punch in.
• In terms of production order, this is the first episode where Richard Pursel wrote an episode without Zeus Cervas and Casey Alexander.

Dub facts

• In Israel, this episode was banned in the country for unknown reasons, until 2015 when it was released exclusively on the streaming service Hot.
  • Despite the ban being lifted, this episode has never aired on Nickelodeon Israel.

Cultural references

• In this episode, SpongeBob has to be at work by 9:00 AM. This is a reference to the start time of many jobs, including that of the SpongeBob crew members.

Errors

SpongeBob's pajamas with the wrong sleeves error.

• When SpongeBob is running back and forth getting ready for bed in the beginning, the second time he runs past, he is in his pajamas, but his normal sleeves are still present. When he passes wearing his nightcap, his pajamas sleeves are now shown.
• When SpongeBob wears his sleepy time blinders and goes to bed, his blinders are missing when he is in the bed.
• The next morning in SpongeBob's house, he wakes up missing his left shoe on his foot. Then, when he runs to the Krusty Krab and right to the kitchen, he has his left shoe and sock on.

SpongeBob's missing teeth.

• While SpongeBob hastily runs to the Krusty Krab and right before he pulls out his pocket watch, his teeth are missing in one frame.

The anchor is black instead of blue on SpongeBob's Krusty Krab employee hat.

• When SpongeBob says, "Almost there," the anchor on his Krusty Krab employee hat is black instead of blue for a couple seconds.

The Galley Grub is misspelled as "Gally Grub."

• When Squidward uses the microphone to tell SpongeBob to deliver one Krabby Patty and Krabby Fries for table number four, the Galley Grub is misspelled as "Gally Grub." This also happens when SpongeBob has to clean a spill with a mop and when Incidental 107 asks for his change.

The order window is missing.

• In the scene where SpongeBob begs Mr. Krabs to give him back his job, when he is one minute late at the Krusty Krab, the order window in the background in the cooking area is missing. However, it is visible in later cooking area scenes throughout the episode.
• When SpongeBob tells Mr. Krabs that he is late, it is still morning. Less than ten seconds later, when Mr. Krabs left, it is already night time.
• When Mr. Krabs first leaves the Krusty Krab, he walks directly straight. However, the Chum Bucket is not there across the street.
  • This error also happens when SpongeBob is late for work and runs directly straight to the Krusty Krab.

The black ring on the Krusty Krab employee hat turns blue.

• After Squidward says, "If you love it so much, why don't you just live here?," SpongeBob grins and in that shot the black ring part of his Krusty Krab employee hat turns blue.

SpongeBob's missing pores.

• After Mr. Krabs tells SpongeBob to clean himself up and SpongeBob briefly moves his head down, the pores on the top of his head are missing.
• When Squidward attempts to put the dishes in the dishwasher, he puts the dishes on the conveyor belt. After SpongeBob reveals himself in the dishwater, the dishes disappear.

Brown spot error.

• Before Squidward tells SpongeBob "goodnight," the wall between SpongeBob's nightcap and his headboard is brown. When the shot switches to a close-up of this, the wall has the correct coloration.
• When Squidward says goodnight to SpongeBob at the Krusty Krab, it is morning. However, a few scenes later when Mr. Krabs and Squidward are walking home, it is nighttime.
  • It is likely the scene skipped the events of the morning to quitting time.
• When Incidental 107 asks for change, his food and tray disappear in the next shot of him.
  • In the following shot, there is nothing in Incidental 107's right hand. Then, when he shows Squidward SpongeBob's clothes, SpongeBob's tighty whities appear out of nowhere.
• When SpongeBob sings the Laundry Song, he attaches his underwear to a clothesline. The line continually changes from one rope without returning, to a full rope returning to the kitchen.
• When Mr. Krabs asks Squidward about who put the fancy-smelling soaps in the restroom, the pupil of Squidward's right eye appears to be thinner. After one scene, the pupil of his right eye is normal.
• When Mr. Krabs runs out of his office after seeing Harold SquarePants in anger, the light blue cloth on the left side of his shirt is torn. After a couple seconds, however, when Mr. Krabs cries after all of the customers run out of the Krusty Krab in disgust, the said cloth is back in one piece.

Patrick's missing eyebrows.

• When Patrick walks out of the kitchen and says, "Thanks, SpongeBob," his eyebrows are missing for one frame.
• When SpongeBob is playing his drums, cymbals can be heard, but he does not hit the cymbals while playing.
• When Mr. Krabs enters the Krusty Krab, his pants and legs gone transparent.

The incorrect writers are listed.

• In the Welsh dub, Luke Brookshier, Tom King, and Steven Banks are all listed as writers of this episode, even though none of them wrote this episode.
  • Brookshier and King are also erroneously listed as storyboard directors.
    • Also, Tom Yasumi is credited as the animation director instead of Andrew Overtoom.
• In the Filipino dub, at one scene, Gary does not say anything, instead of the usual meow undubbed from Tom Kenny.
