Synopsis

Mr. Krabs makes some new rules and goes to his office while Squidward imitates him behind his back but Mr. Krabs hears him and confronts him on this. However, Squidward lies that he was imitating him out of flattery and he is let off the hook.

Mimic Madness 019

Eat your patties.

SpongeBob believes this lie and decides to mimic/imitate people because he heard that "imitation plus flattery equals happy people." He first imitates a father yelling at his kids. The father and the kids become impressed with SpongeBob's mimicry. SpongeBob then imitates Squidward, who also likes his imitation. He then imitates Patrick, who thinks he's looking at his real self.

SpongeBob then imitates Sandy and Plankton, while they were playing a game of chess. Sandy admires the imitation, but Plankton says that "The voice is all wrong." He also imitates the French Narrator by saying "80,000 Impressions Later..." in his voice as the narrator complains about it.

Mimic Madness 070

SpongeBob's imitations go too far.

After a while, it starts to get annoying, as everyone tries to persuade him to stop, but he gets a thing called "mocking mimicry madness" and ends up forgetting who he truly is.

SpongeBob's friends, including Plankton, attempt to help, but they only make it worse, as SpongeBob happens to mimic all of them at once, much to their disgust and horror. Sandy tries to get SpongeBob to come back to his senses though his attempts cause him to have a breakdown of several imitations and he leaves town calling himself a freak.

SpongeBob goes to live in a cave in regrets of not remembering himself. His friends find him and end up mimicking him in order to bring back SpongeBob.

Mimic Madness 123

Everyone imitates SpongeBob

It ends up working, but the others get the mocking mimicry madness and end up acting like SpongeBob. At first, SpongeBob is shocked but gets around to it as they all laugh crazily like him.

Mimic Madness 124

Rough version of the storyboard

Differences between the versions of the episode

Differences between the rough storyboard and the finished storyboard

1. In the opening shot in the finished storyboard:

  • There is a foreground.
  • The Krusty Krab, its sign, other buildings, road, kelp, and flower clouds look closer to the finished episode.
  • The foreground replaces a circle in the area that is across the street from The Krusty Krab.
  • The "Open" arrow sign, the flags and Krabby Patty sign on The Krusty Krab, boatmobiles, and some kelp and coral have been added.
  • The position of the flower clouds have been moved, particularly, the one closest to the left of the screen.
  • The bubble movement is shown.

2. In the rough storyboard, instead of going straight to Mr. Krabs talking to SpongeBob and Squidward, there is a scene where SpongeBob runs into The Krusty Krab. He then breathes heavily. He then happily walks towards the kitchen. He is then followed by Squidward, who is slouching and seems to dislike that he has to go back to work. It then shows Mr. Krabs talking to SpongeBob and Squidward, but it starts after the opening shot.

3. In the scene with Mr. Krabs talking to SpongeBob and Squidward:

  • The angle of the first shot is slightly different.
  • The characters are more complete looking in the finished storyboard.
  • The pans in the kitchen appear in the finished storyboard.
  • In the rough storyboard, Mr. Krabs is wearing the army hat on his head. In the finished storyboard, he is wearing it on his head.
  • The top of the cash register appears in the finished storyboard.
  • Squidward's hat is more slouched over in the rough storyboard than it is in the finished storyboard.
  • There is a table in the rough storyboard that is not in the finished storyboard.
  • In the rough storyboard, Mr. Krabs hits the stick in front of him and looks at SpongeBob and Squidward. In the finished storyboard, Mr. Krabs hits the stick next to him and looks in front of him.
  • In the rough storyboard, when Mr. Krab walks back towards the right side of The Krusty Krab, he is holding the stick in his left hand. In the finished storyboard, he is holding it in his right hand.
  • In the rough storyboard, when Mr. Krabs turns towards the left side of The Krusty Krab after going back towards the right side of the Krusty Krab, his "thumb" is in the wrong place. This is fixed in the finished storyboard.
  • In the rough storyboard, when Mr. Krabs hits the stick on his hand, it is straight across. In the finished storyboard, it is at an angle, closer to ahead of him.
  • When the shot is a close-up of Mr. Krabs, in the rough storyboard, he is holding the stick up next to him. In the finished storyboard, his arm is down, so the stick is not shown.

4. When SpongeBob has the "#1" claw on:

  • The shot is closer to him in the rough storyboard than it is in the finished storyboard.
  • The finished storyboard has SpongeBob doing a little dance before and after he rips his shirt off. The rough storyboard does not have this.

5. When Mr. Krabs takes off Squidward's mask:

  • In the rough storyboard, because the rough storyboard has the shot closer to SpongeBob, it pans over to Squidward.
  • In the rough storyboard, the Squidward mask falls down. In the finished storyboard, it is pushed off his face and falls several feet away from Squidward.
  • Squidward isn't wearing his Krusty Krab hat in the rough storyboard. He is in the final storyboard.

6. In the shot where Mr. Krabs tells SpongeBob and Squidward that he will be in his office:

  • The stuff in the office of Mr. Krabs is there in the finished storyboard. In the rough storyboard, they are missing.

8. When Squidward imitates Mr. Krabs in the rough storyboard, SpongeBob's reaction is longer than it is in the finished storyboard.

9. When Mr. Krabs pops out of the cash register:

  • The shot is different between the two versions.
  • In the finished storyboard, money pops out of the register. In rough storyboard, it does not.

10. When SpongeBob goes up his hat, it inflates a bit in the finished storyboard. It does not do so in the rough storyboard.

11. When Squidward tries to come up with an excuse:

  • In the rough storyboard, when Mr. Krabs' back is shown, his mouth appears, Squidward's hat is leaning forward, and Squidward is not sweating (the first time). In the finished storyboard, Mr. Krabs' might does not appear, Squidward's hat is leaning back, and Squidward is sweating.
  • In the rough storyboard, Squidward's excuse scene is shorter than it is the final storyboard.
  • In the final storyboard, when Mr. Krabs' front is shown, Squidward's hat is leaning back. In the rough storyboard, it is not leaning at all.

15. When SpongeBob leaves the hat:

  • He is more triangular in the final storyboard than he is in the rough storyboard.
  • In the final version, he holds his hat above him as he leaves it. In the rough storyboard, he just comes out of the hat and it is on his head.

16. When Squidward says that it is a close one, he looks down at SpongeBob in the rough storyboard. In the final storyboard, Squidward looks out in front of him.

17. When SpongeBob repeats what Squidward said, in the rough storyboard, he just looks at Squidward. In the final storyboard, he holds his hand.

18. When the super close-up of SpongeBob's face appears, in the rough storyboard, his pupils and irises are bigger, his holes are in a different place than in the final storyboard, and he has fewer holes than in the final storyboard. He is also missing his freckles, which the final storyboard features.

19. Right after the super close-up of SpongeBob's face, he is leaning up against Squidward. In the final storyboard, he is smiling. In the rough storyboard, he is not.

20. When SpongeBob leaves the register boat, in the rough storyboard, he walks away. In the final storyboard, he runs away.

21. When SpongeBob goes to the window:

  • The shot is different wider in the rough storyboard than it is in the final storyboard.

  • In the rough storyboard, it is the first fish is a generic fish that resembles Nat Peterson. In the final storyboard, it is Sandals.

  • When the soda is thrown, in the rough storyboard, only the soda itself appears being thrown. In the final storyboard, the soda with the cup and some idea appear being thrown.
  • In the rough storyboard, it cuts to SpongeBob before the adult fish is shown smiling. In the final storyboard, the fish smiles and then it cuts to SpongeBob.

30. After SpongeBob leaves, Tom's angrily telling the kids to eat appears to be more extreme than his rough storyboard counterpart.

31. Because there were only three patties delivered to the table, when the kids pick up the patties to eat them, in the rough storyboard, there are no patties left. In the final storyboard, there is one left as four were delivered.

36. In the opening shot of the kitchen, in the rough storyboard, the chopping station and the chimney are shown. In the final version, they are not there and the fryer is there.

37. When SpongeBob morphs into the human face/head, it is a different face in the rough storyboard than in the final storyboard. It is also just the face that morphs in the rough storyboard, instead of the full head like in the final storyboard.

38. In the rough storyboard, after the human face scene, Patrick is shown sleeping on his rock. It then zooms into him. It then shows him dreaming of a fence on a field. An ice cream cone with legs and arms jumps over the fence and out of the dream. It then leaps into his mouth. This repeats two more times. SpongeBob walks up to the rock. SpongeBob wakes Patrick up, which messes with the next ice cream cone's jump. It lands on Patrick's eyes. The dream cloud then disappears and Patrick falls down the side of his rock. SpongeBob then imitates Patrick. Patrick then thinks SpongeBob is himself. SpongeBob then reveals that he is SpongeBob, not Patrick. SpongeBob then starts laughing. Patrick joins him. Patrick still thinks SpongeBob is himself. In the final storyboard, the scene remains almost the same, except for the beginning and the setting of the scene. At the beginning of the scene, Patrick is digging through the Krusty Krab trash. He finds one patty and tosses it at the front window of The Krusty Krab. He then finds a soda cup and starts to eat it. SpongeBob then leaves The Krusty Krab as Patrick is looking the other way. He then imitates Patrick. SpongeBob tells Patrick that he is Patrick. In the rough storyboard, the customer, who is just a generic fish, is seated near the window and is located on the left of the screen. In the final storyboard, the customer, who is Nathiel Waters, is seated near the restrooms and is located on the right of the screen.

49. Because of the last point, in the rough storyboard, SpongeBob moves from the right of the screen to the left. In the final storyboard, it is the opposite. Also, SpongeBob looks like the generic fish in the rough storyboard. In the final storyboard, he looks like Nathiel.

  • Because SpongeBob's version of the five guests sing with him in the rough storyboard, they have a determined look on their faces. In the final storyboard, because SpongeBob's version of the five guests don't sing with him in the final storyboard, they have a more saddened face.
  • In the rough storyboard, he is not shown transforming into the fish's head, the face just appears. In the final storyboard, he is shown transforming. The same thing happens when SpongeBob transforms back into the five guests and when he transforms into Plankton.
  • The two heads of the fish are different between the two versions of the storyboard.
  • When SpongeBob has Plankton's head, in the rough storyboard, he continues the march normally. In the final storyboard, he looks up, closes his bottom lid, and shakes his arm up in the air.

88. In the super close-up of SpongeBob during the song, in the final storyboard, it starts with SpongeBob's normal face, without his nose, and eyes of his friends appear and then he mixes them around. In the rough storyboard, the eyes and noses of his friends appear on his face and then he mixes them around.

89. After SpongeBob's face rips off the screen, in the final storyboard, SpongeBob's left arm is a bell. In the rough storyboard, it is normal and then turns into a bell.

90. When each of the characters hits their head on the bell, in the rough storyboard, SpongeBob's version of Sandy is shown doing it too. In the final storyboard, that is cut.

91. When SpongeBob transforms the bell into a phone, in the rough storyboard, he has a scared look on his face. In the final storyboard, he has a sad look on his face. This continues until SpongeBob looks up shortly after the phone part.

93. When the opening of the cave is shown, in the final storyboard, there is a stream of tears. In the rough storyboard, there is not. This makes the part where Mr. Krabs follows the stream look incorrect as the scene is missing the stream of tears.

94. When the five guests find SpongeBob, in rough storyboard, in the final shot before it cuts back to SpongeBob, the order (from right to left) is: Mr. Krabs, Plankton, Sandy, Patrick, and Squidward. In the final storyboard, the order is: Mr. Krabs, Squidward, Plankton, Sandy, and Patrick.

95. In the cave, in the shot where the guests are around SpongeBob, in the final storyboard, Plankton appears. In the rough storyboard, he does not.

96. When Sandy tries to test to see if SpongeBob can see how many fingers she is holding up, in the rough storyboard, SpongeBob is facing to the right of the screen. In the final storyboard, he is facing to the left of the screen. This makes SpongeBob look up at Sandy, instead of to his right to see Sandy like in the rough storyboard. It also causes the "B" and the phone heads of SpongeBob to be in a different direction in the two versions of the storyboard.

97. In the final storyboard, SpongeBob is shown transforming from the "B" head into the phone head. In the rough storyboard, he does not.

98. When Sandy tells the group they have to imitate SpongeBob, throughout the speech, SpongeBob is transforming from the phone head in the final storyboard. In the rough storyboard, he only has his normal head.

  • In the rough storyboard, she gets it from off frame. In the final storyboard, she gets it from behind her.
  • In the rough storyboard, the brush has dots that look like SpongeBob's holes on it. In the final storyboard, the paint is just yellow.

100. When Sandy goes to brush Mr. Krabs, her tongue is out more in the final storyboard than it is in the rough storyboard.

101. When Sandy goes to brush Squidward in the rough storyboard, he is frightened. In the final storyboard, he is worried.

102. When Sandy hits Squidward with the brush, Squidward's mouth is more open in the final storyboard than in the rough storyboard.

103. When Sandy goes to brush Patrick, in the final storyboard, his pants are showing. In the rough storyboard, it is not.

104. When Sandy goes to brush herself, in the final storyboard, her arm is above her. In the rough storyboard, it is closer to her body.

105. When Sandy goes to brush Plankton:

  • In the final storyboard, he is terrified. In the rough storyboard, he is surprised.
  • When Sandy picks Plankton up, in the final storyboard, he flails his arms. In the rough storyboard, he does not.

106. The paint bucket is more cylindrical in the rough storyboard than in the final storyboard.

107. In the rough storyboard, when Sandy takes Plankton out of the paint bucket, he looks disgusted. In the final storyboard, he has paint in his mouth and has to spit it out.

108. When Sandy mimics SpongeBob, it is slightly different in the two versions of the storyboard.

109. After Sandy mimics SpongeBob, in the rough storyboard, the next order is: Squidward, Mr. Krabs, and Plankton. In the final storyboard, the order is: Patrick, Mr. Krabs, and Plankton.

110. In the final storyboard, Patrick does a similar routine to the one that Squidward does in the rough storyboard.

111. Mr. Krabs' routine is longer in the final storyboard than in the rough storyboard.

112. When the close-up Mr. Krabs is shown during his routine, he is yellow in the final storyboard. He is not colored in the rough storyboard.

113. When Plankton is squished by the bottle of the secret formula, he is yellow in the rough storyboard. In the final storyboard, he is not colored.

114. When Sandy walks up to SpongeBob while he is morphing back to his normal self, in the rough storyboard, she is yellow. In the final storyboard, she is not colored.

115. When Sandy turns to the group after she checks up on SpongeBob during his final transformation, in the rough storyboard, her arms are bent. In the final storyboard, they are straight.

116. When the group is shown during SpongeBob's final transformation:

  • In the rough storyboard, Sandy's arms are in front of her. In the final storyboard, they are next to her.
  • In the rough storyboard, the group is yellow. In the final storyboard, they are not colored.
  • In the rough storyboard, they are in a circle. In the final storyboard, they are in a line.
  • In the rough storyboard, Plankton is next to Squidward and Mr. Krabs. In the final storyboard, Plankton is next to SpongeBob and Mr. Krabs.

117. When the scene is a close-up of Sandy after she tells the group that they all have to mimic SpongeBob, the movement is different between the two versions.

118. When SpongeBob's version of Mr. Krabs' head spits out SpongeBob's version of Squidward's head, in the rough storyboard, it is done to the front of SpongeBob. In the final storyboard, it is done upwards.

119. In the final storyboard, when SpongeBob gets his eyes back, in the close-up of SpongeBob's face, they have to come together. In the rough storyboard, they came together in the shot prior.

120. When SpongeBob gets his nose, in the final storyboard, his eyelashes come back shortly after. In the rough storyboard, SpongeBob's eyelids are half-closed, so they don't appear until he opens his eyes in the next shot.

121. When SpongeBob is completely back to normal, he jumps in the air and a sparkle appears around SpongeBob.

  • It is colored in the final storyboard. In the rough storyboard, it is not.
  • In the final storyboard, it causes the group to look away. In the rough storyboard, it does not.

122. When SpongeBob gets out his spatula, in the rough storyboard, he held it in front of him and there is nothing on it. In the final storyboard, he holds it above him and there is lard on his spatula.

123. When the group's heads transform into SpongeBob heads, in the rough storyboard, Plankton is in front of Mr. Krabs. In the final storyboard, he is next to Mr. Krabs.

124. After the group's heads transform into SpongeBob heads, in the rough storyboard, the scene shows a close-up of Squidward's head, where Squidward sheds a tear. It then cuts back to SpongeBob and group, where they start laughing together. It then cuts back to Squidward's head, where, inside Squidward's eyes, Squidwards appear, banging on the eye, like it is glass. In the final storyboard, these scenes are taken out is cut out. Instead, it is just one long shot of SpongeBob joining the group laughing.

Differences between the final storyboard and the final episode

Release

Trivia

General

  • Although this episode aired in 2017 it was made in 2016 according to the credits.
  • This episode shows that Tom Kenny is extremely talented in doing all the impressions of the characters like Mel Blanc (The Man of a Thousand Voices) did the impressions of the Looney Tunes characters.
  • The last time SpongeBob could make different-shaped faces was in "Face Freeze!"
  • When SpongeBob uncontrollably imitates his friends at his house, when he imitates Plankton, he says "I went to college!" This is a reference to a quote from the episode "Plankton!," where Plankton makes his debut.
  • This episode's title card is similar to that of "Culture Shock," only this one is brighter and is in widescreen.
  • In the original storyboard, Karen comes out of the Chum Bucket and laughs at SpongeBob's impression of Plankton. She does not appear in the final cut.
  • SpongeBob tearing off his shirt marks the first time his pants were shown without his shirt.
  • This episode premiered two years after "License to Milkshake" premiered in Germany and Poland.
  • This and "House Worming" were the first season 10 episodes to premiere in 2017.
  • When SpongeBob tells Mr. Krabs to "bring it around town," this is a reference to the bubble-blowing technique in "Bubblestand."
  • The episode "Friend or Foe" is referenced in the song "Who Am I?" when SpongeBob sings "Am I friend... Or foe?"
  • This episode marks the only instance so far where the French narrator directly talks to SpongeBob. The fourth wall is broken here.
    • Coincidentally, SpongeBob and the French Narrator are both voiced by Tom Kenny.
  • This is one of the rare instances where Plankton spends the entire episode with the other main characters without being an antagonist.
  • In this episode, Patrick eats food from the garbage in front of the Krusty Krab. Usually, he does so in the dumpster at the back of the restaurant.
  • In the first shot of the inside of the Krusty Krab, the roof above the kitchen/office is made of metal. However, in "Squidtastic Voyage," the roof of the kitchen/office is made of the wood from the floor of the Krusty Krab.
  • The scene where Tom screams "I said eat your patties!" has become a popular internet meme.
  • The episode is similar to Gone, since it involves around SpongeBob imitating his friends. However, he also imitates Plankton.

Errors

Mimic Madness 065

Squidward is not shown with a forehead.

  • Squidward is shown with no forehead wrinkles at just one point.
  • During the song "Who Am I," SpongeBob's impressions (Sandy, Plankton, Patrick, Mr. Krabs, Squidward) hit their heads on his bell hand. But as they ring it, SpongeBob's Sandy did not ring it nor appear.
  • When SpongeBob says, "I don't know!" while the camera zooms out, his legs are a bit too thick.
    • Also, he is back to his normal self.
  • When Mr. Krabs walks into his office, he walks in like the door is closed and he is opening it.
  • SpongeBob should not be able to mimic Sandy's helmet.
