Synopsis

Mr. Krabs makes some new rules and goes to his office while Squidward imitates him behind his back but Mr. Krabs hears him however, Squidward lies that he was imitating him out of flattery. SpongeBob believes this lie and decides to mimic/imitate people for business, and also because he heard that "imitation plus flattery equals happy people." He first imitates a father yelling at his kids. The father and the kids become impressed with SpongeBob's mimicry. SpongeBob them imitates Squidward, who also likes his imitation. He then imitates Patrick, who thinks he's looking at his real self.

SpongeBob then imitates Sandy and Plankton, while they were playing a game of checkers. Sandy admires the imitation, but Plankton says that "The voice is all wrong." He also imitates the French Narrator by saying "80 000 Imitations Later..." in his voice as the narrator complains about it. After a while, it starts to get annoying as his everyone tries to persuade him to stop, but he gets a thing called "mocking mimicry madness" and ends up forgetting who he truly is. SpongeBob's friends, including Plankton, attempt to help, but they make it worse as SpongeBob happens to mimic all of them at once to their disgust. Sandy tries to get SpongeBob to come back to his senses but his attempts cause him to have a breakdown of imitations and leaves town calling himself a freak.

SpongeBob goes to live in a cave in regrets of not remembering himself. His friends find him and end up mimicking him in order to bring back SpongeBob. It ends up working, but the others get the mocking mimicry madness and end up like SpongeBob. The episode ends with a focus of a laughing Squidward and his distraught real self demanding to be let out of his subconscious.

1. In the opening shot in the finished storyboard:

• There is a forground.
• The Krusty Krab, its sign, other buildings, road, kelp, and flower clouds look closer to the finished episode.
• The forgound replaces a circle in the area that is across the street from The Krusty Krab.
• The "Open" arrow sign, the flags and Krabby Patty sign on The Krusty Krab, boatmobiles, and some kelp and coral have been added.
• The position of the flower clouds have been moved, particularly, the one closest to the left of the screen.
• The bubble movement is shown.

2. In the rough storyboard, instead of going straight to Mr. Krabs talking to SpongeBob and Squidward, there is scene where SpongeBob runs into The Krusty Krab. He then breathes heavily. He then happily walks towards the kitchen. He is then followed by Squidward, who is slouching and seems to dislike that he has to go back to work. It then shows Mr. Krabs talking to SpongeBob and Squidward, but it starts after the opening shot.

3. In the scene with Mr. Krabs talking to SpongeBob and Squidward:

• The angle of the first shot is slightly different.
• The characters are more complete looking in the finished storyboard.

5. When Mr. Krabs takes off Squidward's mask:

• In the rough storyboard, because the rough storyboard has the shot closer to SpongeBob, it pans over to Squidward.
• In the rough storyboard, the Squidward mask falls down. In the finished storyboard, it is pushed off his face and falls several feet away from Squidward.
• Squidward isn't wearing his Krusty Krab hat in the rough storyboard. He is in the final storyboard.

6. In the shot where Mr. Krabs tells SpongeBob and Squidward that he will be in his office:

• The angle is different between the two versions.
• In the rough storyboard, the army gear is gone. In the finished storyboard, Mr. Krabs is still wearing/holding it.

7. When Mr. Krabs goes to his office:

• In the rough storyboard, there is a window on the right wall of The Krusty Krab. In the finished storyboard, since it is supposed to be a window, there is a building in the background.
• The stuff in the office of Mr. Krabs is there in the finished storyboard. In the rough storyboard, they are missing.

8. When Squidward imitates Mr. Krabs in the rough storyboard, SpongeBob's reaction is longer than it is in the finished storyboard.

9. When Mr. Krabs pops out of the cash register:

• The shot is different between the two versions.
• In the finished storyboard, money pops out of the register. In rough storyboard, it does not.

10. When SpongeBob goes up his hat, it inflates a bit in the finished storyboard. It does not do so in the rough storyboard.

11. When Squidward tries to come up with an excuse:

• In the rough storyboard, when Mr. Krabs' back is shown, his mouth appears, Squidward's hat is leaning forward, and Squidward is not sweating (the first time). In the finished storyboard, Mr. Krabs' might does not appear, Squidward's hat is leaning back, and Squidward is sweating.
• In the rough storyboard, Squidard's excuse scene is shorter than it is the final storyboard.

14. When Mr. Krabs goes back into the cash register:

• In the final storyboard, he holds his nose like he is diving. In the rough storyboard, he does not do this.

15. When SpongeBob leaves the hat:

17. When SpongeBob repeats what Squidward said, in the rough storyboard, he just looks at Squidward. In the final storyboard, he holds his hand.

18. When the super close-up of SpongeBob's face appears, in the rough storyboard, his pupils and irises are bigger, his holes are in a different place than in the final storyboard, and he has less holes than in the final storyboard. He is also missing his freckles, which the final storyboard features.

19. Right after the super close-up of SpongeBob's face, he is leaning up against Squidward. In the final storyboard, he is smiling. In the rough storyboard, he is not.

• At the end of the shot, in the rough storyboard, he looks to the upper left corner of the screen. In the final storyboard, he does not do this.
• In the final storyboard, there is a bubble transition between this scene and the next. In the rough storyboard, it just cuts to the next scene.

24. During the scene with the three kid fish and the adult fish at the table:

• In the rough storyboard, they are just four generic fish. In the final storyboard, they are a kid version of Abigail Marge, Harv, and Paco and a fish that resembles Tom.
• In the rough storyboard, SpongeBob drops off only three visible Krabby Patties, which are next to each other on the plate. In the final storyboard, there are four visible Krabby Patties, three of which are next to each other and one on top of the pile.
• When the soda is thrown, in the rough storyboard, only the soda itself appears being thrown. In the final storyboard, the soda with the cup and some idea appear being thrown.
• In the rough storyboard, it cuts to SpongeBob before the adult fish is shown smiling. In the final storyboard, the fish smiles and then it cuts to SpongeBob.

25. In the rough storyboard, SpongeBob's first morph is done differently than in the final storyboard. The end of the morph is also a lot shorter.

26. After SpongeBob morphs for the first time, he smiles. In the rough storyboard, his mouth is open. In the final storyboard, his teeth are shown.

27. In the final storyboard, when the kid fish laugh at SpongeBob, Harv is holding the soda. In the rough storyboard, Harv's counterpart is not holding the soda.

28. The close-up shot of Tom laughing is longer than the shot of his rough storyboard counterpart laughing.

29. When SpongeBob leaves table of four, in the rough storyboard, SpongeBob's mouth is open. In the final storyboard, it is not.

30. After SpongeBob leaves, Tom's angrily telling the kids to eat appears to be more extreme than his rough storyboard counterpart.

31. Because there was only three patties delivered to the table, when the kids pick up the patties to eat them, in the rough storyboard, there are no patties left. In the final storyboard, there is one left as four were delivered.

32. When the line of customers is shown at the cash register:

• The shot is wider in the rough storyboard than in the final storyboard.
• In the rough storyboard, there are four generic fish. In the final storyboard, they are Charlie, Horace, Nancy, and Ivy.

33. In the rough storyboard, a female fish is having a hard time deciding what she wants on the menu. SpongeBob then mimics her. He turns back into his normal self. She laughs at this imitation. She then pinches his cheeks. It then cuts to Squidward telling SpongeBob to make the orders. In the final storyboard, this scene was cut.

34. When Squidward yells at SpongeBob to make the orders, in the final storyboard, Squidward is holding the side of the cashier boat. In the rough storyboard, he is not doing this.

35. When SpongeBob imitates Squidward:

• In the rough storyboard, SpongeBob looks more like a piece of toast. In the final storyboard, he looks more like Squidward.
• SpongeBob's imitation is shorter in the rough storyboard than it is in the final storyboard. He also doesn't look back at the crowd. This and the fact that in the rough storyboard, Squidward does not look pleased and there is no laughter like it is in the final storyboard, suggests that at that stage, he was just going to imitate Squidward, not make a joke.

36. In the opening shot of the kitchen, in the rough storyboard, the chopping station and the chimney are shown. In the final version, they are not there and the frier is there.

37. When SpongeBob morphs into the human face/head, it is a different face in the rough storyboard than in the final storyboard. It is also just the face that morphs in the rough storyboard, instead of the full head like in the final storyboard.

38. In the rough storyboard, after the human face scene, Patrick is shown sleeping on his rock. It then zooms into him. It then shows him dreaming of a fence on a field. An ice cream cone with legs and arms jumps over the fence and out of the dream. It then leaps into his mouth. This repeats two more times. SpongeBob walks up to the rock. SpongeBob wakes Patrick up, which messes with the next ice cream cone's jump. It lands on Patrick's eyes. The dream cloud then disappears and Patrick falls down the side of his rock. SpongeBob then imitates Patrick. Patrick then thinks SpongeBob is himself. SpongeBob then reveals that he is SpongeBob, not Patrick. SpongeBob then starts laughing. Patrick joins him. Patrick still thinks SpongeBob is himself. In the final storyboard, the scene remains almost the same, except for the beginning and the setting of the scene. In the beginning of the scene, Patrick is digging through the Krusty Krab trash. He finds one patty and tosses it at the front window of The Krusty Krab. He then finds a soda cup and starts to eat it. SpongeBob then leaves The Krusty Krab as Patrick is looking the other way. He then imitates Patrick. SpongeBob tells Patrick that he is Patrick. Patrick looks up from the trash. The scene then proceeds as it does in the rough storyboard.

39. When Plankton and Sandy are playing chess:

• In the rough storyboard, Sandy makes a move before Plankton does. In the final storyboard, this is taken out.
• In the rough storyboard, when Plankton is done moving the rook, there are two pawns behind him and a king near the rook. In the final storyboard, there is a pawn and a rook behind Plankton and a king and pawn near the rook that Plankton just moved.
• When the rook falls on Plankton, in the rough storyboard, Sandy picks it up. The same is done in the final storyboard, but after Plankton lifts his arm.
• When Sandy picks up the rook, Plankton is streched differently between the two versions.
• When the close-up of Plankton is shown, in the rough storyboard, he has a face of fear. In the final storyboard, he has a face of defeat.

40. When SpongeBob morphs into Sandy, in the rough storyboard, he doesn't have the flower on the helment. In the final storyboard, he does.

41. When Plankton tries to get up, in the rough storyboard, he is shown already up and then being pushed back by SpongeBob, who goes from the left of the screen. In the final storyboard, Plankton tries to get up and then is pushed by SpongeBob, who goes from the right of the screen.

42. When SpongeBob is morphed as Sandy, in the rough storyboard, he dances behind the table. In the final storyboard, he dances near the table.

43. When SpongeBob is morphed as Sandy and Plankton, when the Plankton head laughs, in the rough storyboard, SpongeBob's left hand is pointed upwards. In the final storyboard, it is pointed down.

44. When Plankton is shown on the chess board when he is examining SpongeBob's performance of him, in the rough storyboard, SpongeBob is shown in the shot. In the final storyboard, he is not.

46. When SpongeBob impersonates the French Narrator, in the rough storyboard, SpongeBob has a beard and a small hat. In the final storyboard, SpongeBob does not have a beard and the hat is bigger and red.

47. After the time card, the rough storyboard cuts to the customer at The Krusty Krab. In the final storyboard, it cuts to the exterior of The Krusty Krab and then to the customer.

48. The scene with the customer after the time card looks almost completely different between the two versions. In the rough storyboard, the customer, who is just a generic fish, is seated near the window and is located on the left of the screen. In the final storyboard, the customer, who is Nathiel Waters, is seated near the restrooms and is located on the right of the screen.

49. Because of the last point, in the rough storyboard, SpongeBob moves from the right of the screen to the left. In the final storyboard, it is the opposite. Also, SpongeBob looks like the generic fish in the rough storyboard. In the final storyboard, he looks like Nathiel.

50. In the scene with the customer after the time card, in the rough storyboard, there is a part where the scene the shot zooms into the customer's face. In the final storyboard, this is cut.

51. When the customer/Nathiel throws the table, in the rough storyboard, he throws it to the right of the screen. In the final storyboard, he throws it to the left.

52. After the customer/Nathiel throws the table, in the rough storyboard, because the customer is faced towards the right of the screen, he turns around to leave. In the final storyboard, because Nathiel is alrady faced towards the left of the screen, he just runs that way.

• The rough storyboard seems to imply that when Squidard threw his hat, he also was lifting his leg to leave the cashier boat. The final storyboard has Squidward leave through the door in the boat.
• The rough storyboard shows Squidward leaving The Krusty Krab. The final storyboard cuts this.

57. When Mr. Krabs leaves the register after Squidward leaves:

• In the rough storyboard, Mr. Krabs leaving the register is a surprise to Sandy. In the final storyboard, the register opens, she investigates, and then Mr. Krabs pops out.
• In the rough storyboard, Mr. Krabs doesn't actually leave the cash register. In the final storyboard, he does.
• In the rough storyboard, Mr. Krabs goes right into his speech about Mimicry Madness. In the final storyboard, he leans in to agree with Sandy about the fact that SpongeBob has gone too far.
• In the rough storyboard, Mr. Krabs has the small pincer next to the big pincer. In the final storyboard, he has it seperated.
• Because of the last point, SpongeBob's mimicry of Mr. Krabs follows the same thing.
• SpongeBob's impression of Mr. Krabs lasts longer in the final storyboard than it does in the rough storyboard.
• In the rough storyboard, Mr. Krabs hides back into the register. In the final storyboard, he jumps out of the register and dives back into the register. This sends SpongeBob flying backwards. Sandy then checks on him. SpongeBob then gets up.

58. When Sandy, Squidward, Patrick, Mr. Krabs, and Plankton are outside of SpongeBob's house:

• In the rough storyboard, Mr. Krabs is smiling. In the final storyboard, he is not.
• Sandy is starts repeating her plan in the wide shot in the final storyboard, when she waits until the medium to do so in the rough storyboard.
• When the scene shows Plankton, he appears to be angry in the rough storyboard. In the final storyboard, he is unconcerned.
• When the scene shows Squidward, he appears to be excited in the rough storyboard. In the final storyboard, he is unconcerned.
• Patrick grabs Squidward by his neck in the rough storyboard. In the final storyboard, he grabs Squidward by his nose.
• Patrick is holding Plankton tighter in the rough storyboard than he is in the final storyboard.
• Because Patrick grabs Squidward by his neck in the rough storyboard, he choke-holds Squidward. In the final storyboard, because Patrick grabbed Squidward by the nose, Patrick pulls Squidward's nose.
• When Mr. Krabs walks in front of the group, in the rough storyboard, Patrick angrily looks at Squidward. In the final version, Patrick just looks angry and in front of himself.
• In the rough storyboard, when Mr. Krabs stops walking. He is determined. In the final storyboard, he is concerned.
• Mr. Krabs' pep talk is longer in the final storyboard than it is in the rough storyboard.
• When Sandy presses the doorbell, in the rough storyboard, Sandy's finger bends. In the final storyboard, it does not.

59. When SpongeBob answers his door inside the pinapple:

• In the final storyboard, a window appears. In the rough storyboard, it does not.
• Sandy and Patrick appear in the doorway of SpongeBob in the rough storyboard. In the final storyboard, only Patrick appears.
• In the final storyboard, when Sandy walks in, Squidward appears. In the rough storyboard, he does not until Sandy is fully inside.

60. When Plankton enters SpongeBob's pinapple, in the final storyboard, the exterior is shown. In the rough storyboard, it is not.

61. When SpongeBob accepts the challenge of mimicing the five guests, his mouth is in a different place in the different versions.

62. When SpongeBob is morphing to mimic the five guests, his transformation is slightly different in the different versions.

63. When the reaction of the five guests to SpongeBob's mimicing of them is shown:

• In the wide shot, in the rough storyboard, SpongeBob's version of Sandy's head does not have the flower, there is a picture frame, and the door is closed. In the final storyboard, SpongeBob's version of Sandy's head does have the flower, there is no picture frame, but instead the window mentioned earlier, and the door is open.
• When Patrick is shown, his reaction is more extreme in the final storyboard than it is in the rough storyboard. Mr. Krabs also appears in the frame in the final storyboard, but not the rough storyboard.

64. After it shows Patrick, it pans over to Sandy.

• Because Mr. Krabs does not appear in that shot in the rough storyboard, he does not appear in the panning. He does appear in the final storyboard.
• Next to Sandy, there is the aforementioned picture frame in the rough storyboard. In the final storyboard, it is replaced by the window.

65. The same thing as the above point is true when SpongeBob and Sandy are shown together in the same scene. Additionally, in the rough storyboard, SpongeBob's couch appears in the shot. In the final storyboard, it does not.

66. When Sandy helps SpongeBob to return back into his normal self at SpongeBob's pineapple, in the rough storyboard, she is just scared. In the final storyboard, she helps.

67. When SpongeBob attempt to return to his normal self the second time:

• When he breathes in, in the rough storyboard, his mouth is closed. In the final storyboard, it is open.
• When SpongeBob struggles after he breathes in, in the rough storyboard, half of SpongeBob's version of Plankton's eye is opened and SpongeBob's version of Patrick's eyes are open. In the final storyboard, SpongeBob's version of Plankton's eye and SpongeBob's version of Patrick's eyes are closed.
• When SpongeBob struggles after he breathes in, in the final storyboard, more of SpongeBob's version of Squidward's mouth is showing.
• The attempted morphing is slightly different between the two versions.

68. When the reaction of the four tallest guests is shown:

• In the final storyboard, Patrick's teeth are showing. In the rough storyboard, they are not.
• In the rough storyboard, the group is in front of a blank house corner. In the final storyboard, the window door, and exterior are shown.

69. During SpongeBob's attempt to return to normal, he first shows his version of Gary. In the rough storyboard, the order of the rest is: Mr. Krabs, Squidward, Sandy, Patrick, and the generic adult fish. In the final storyboard, the order is: Patrick, Mr. Krabs, Squidward, Sandy, Plankton, and Tom.

70. When SpongeBob is shown with the others, in the rough storyboard, he morphs into Plankton. It then cuts to Plankton, who yells at SpongeBob. It then cuts to SpongeBob running out of the pineapple while he is still morphing. In the final storyboard, SpongeBob morphs into a combo being and then into Plankton. The scene then proceeds the same way as the rough storyboard.

71. When SpongeBob leaves, in the shot of the interior of the pineapple:

• The angle is different between the two versions of the storyboard.
• Plankton appears in the final storyboard. He does not in the rough storyboard.
• More of the doorframe is shown in the rough storyboard than in the final storyboard.
• In the rough storyboard, Squidward is close to the door and Patrick is further away from the door. In the final storyboard, it is the other way around.

72. When SpongeBob is shown leaving his pineaple, in the shot of the exterior of the pineapple:

• In the rough storyboard, SpongeBob appears to be back to the imitation of the five guests. In the final storyboard, he is just a mix of parts.
• Before the group chases after SpongeBob (they only does this in the final storyboard.), in the rough storyboard, She and Patrick are in the doorway. In the final storyboard, it is Patick and Mr. Krabs.
• In the rough storyboard, there is one window. In the final storyboard, there are two.

• Because the guests chased after SpongeBob in the final storyboard, they appear outside the pineapple. In the rough storyboard, because they did not, they are not outside the pineapple.
• In the rough storyboard, the walkways of SpongeBob and Squidward are more like Patrick's walkway. In the final storyboard, they look more like they normally do.

• This episode's title card is similar to the title card for "Culture Shock," only this one is brighter.
  • The title card is also similar to the title card for "A Pal for Gary."
• In the original storyboard, Karen comes out of the Chum Bucket and laughs at SpongeBob's impression of Plankton. She is not in the final cut.
• This episode premiered two years after "License to Milkshake" premiered in Germany and Poland.
• This episode and "House Worming" are the first Season 10 episodes to premiere in 2017.
