SpongeBob SquarePants has aired in over 170 countries. Airings of episodes in other countries occasionally cut out or edit scenes, sometimes due to different cultural standards or simple editing mistakes. This is a list of scenes edited internationally.

Season 1

  • "Help Wanted" - The scene where SpongeBob serves up Krabby Patties to the angry anchovies while Tiny Tim sings "Livin' in the Sunlight, Lovin' in the Moonlight" was cut in Italy for unknown reasons. It was likely due to copyright issues or length issues.
  • "Ripped Pants" - In some overseas airings of this episode, including Italy, the episode would end when the concert was just beginning.
  • "Jellyfishing" - In early Polish airings, the scene where Patrick jams the net through Squidward's bandaged hand was cut, because it was deemed too violent. In the later airings, the scene was restored for unknown reasons.
  • "Plankton!" - The scene when Plankton says, "Come back here, you swine!" is sometimes cut because the word swine is offensive in some countries.
  • "Naughty Nautical Neighbors" - In early Polish airings, the scene where Squidward chokes on the fork is cut due to its violent content. In the later airings, the scene was restored for unknown reasons.
  • "Pizza Delivery" - At the end of the episode, Squidward's line "Oh, my aching tentacles!" was cut in some countries due to the line being mistaken for an inappropriate reference (causing the screen to go black when the line is said). It is also cut on the Nicktoons Collection Volume One Game Boy Advance cartridge. It is still intact on the DVD and digital releases. Sometime in 2013, it was also deleted from Polish and Greek airings. In Nicktoons U.S. airings, the line is left intact.
  • Hall Monitor” - In some countries, the jail door slamming at the end is cut, due to the screen going black as this happens.
  • "Jellyfish Jam" - In early Polish airings, the scene where SpongeBob does the jellyfish dance was cut. This was likely done to prevent epileptic or photosensitive children from suffering seizures due to the quick flashing lights and stroboscopic effects. In the later airings, the scene was restored for unknown reasons.
  • "F.U.N." - In Albanian airings, the scene where SpongeBob and Plankton sing the F.U.N song was cut.
  • "Scaredy Pants" - In British airings, the scene depicting Patrick cutting chunks of SpongeBob's head is removed, although it was left intact on the UK DVD releases.[1]
  • "Suds" - In Italian airings, both the Sponge Treatment scene and the entire final scene were cut, ending the episode on Spongebob saying "I love the doctor!"
  • "Neptune's Spatula" - In Italian airings, the scene where Neptune opens the cloud to accidentally show Tom Kenny in the shower is cut, possibly because it was too inappropriate.[2]
  • "Hooky" - In the early Polish, the UK, Norwegian airings, the scene where Patrick eats the cheese off the hook and has all hooks in his mouth was cut due to reckless behavior. In the later airings, the scene was restored for unknown reasons but was left cut in the UK apart from the scene where Patrick eats the first bit of cheese.

Season 2

  • "The Fry Cook Games" - In some countries, the scene where SpongeBob and Patrick hold hands is cut as it is thought to be wrong for two men to be doing this.[citation needed]

SquidBobTentaclePantsGroup2

"It all started when I was born."

  • "SquidBob TentaclePants" - The original airing had Squidward talking to a therapist after Sandy's machine exploded, and was deformed and misshapen into a liquid ball of the fused characters that was in the scene where Sandy's machine exploded. This scene was cut from reruns in certain parts of Europe due to being considered too gruesome, though it remains intact in the USA, UK, Turkey, Canada, Spain, Germany, Poland, Norway, Sweden, Greece, France airings, DVD releases, and digital versions.
    • However, in some areas of Kentucky, the ending scene where several different characters are fused with Squidward was at one point cut out, as the cable provider, Insight Communications, has been known to censor explicit content from television.
  • "Whale of a Birthday" - Some countries cut the ending, possibly due to the screen going black.[citation needed]

Season 6

  • "House Fancy" - The scene where SpongeBob rips off Squidward's toenail was cut in Indonesia because of a warning from the Indonesian Broadcasting Commission.[citation needed]
  • Suction Cup Symphony” - In some counties, the explosion at the end is cut, due to the screen going black as it happens.
  • "Choir Boys" - In some countries, the title card is skipped.[5]
  • Cephalopod Lodge” - In the UK, the screen going black as Squidward is stung on the tongue by a jellyfish is replaced with a still shot of the previous image, due to the screen going black in the original version.

Season 7

  • "The Play's The Thing" - In the UK, the scene where multiple items, including Plankton, are thrown at Squidward and SpongeBob is cut for unknown reasons. Patrick throwing the anchor is also cut. These cuts were made because the fast motion of the scenes could affect people sensitive to fast motions.[citation needed]
  • Whelk Attack” - In the UK, the shot of SpongeBob and Patrick without pupils is cut, due to the creepiness of the image.
  • You Don't Know Sponge” - In the UK, the scene where Patrick turns the blender on SpongeBob is cut, due to the dangerous action of the scene.

Season 8

  • "Walking the Plankton" - In the UK, the scene where Plankton falls into a fish's pants is cut.[6]
  • "Squiditis" - In the UK, the scene where SpongeBob puts his feet in the fryer is cut, due to the dangerous action of the scene however he is seen in the next scene screaming with the crispy feet.[citation needed]
  • "Bubble Buddy Returns" - In the UK, the scene where SpongeBob opens the last door while looking for Shiny is cut due to the grossness.[citation needed]
  • "Are You Happy Now?" - There are two suicide jokes in this episode. The first is when Squidward sticks his head in the oven to get out burnt food; the second is when Squidward grabs a rope, giving the implication that he is about to hang himself, but hangs up a birdcage instead. Both scenes are removed in the UK.[citation needed]
  • Karen 2.0“ - In the UK, Squidward’s final line, “Oh, what I wouldn’t do to have my face in the toilet right now.” is cut.
  • Glove World R.I.P.” - In the UK, the scene where SpongeBob and Patrick come out of the Glove Drop with glass shards in their heads is cut due to the grossness.
  • "Treats!" In the UK, the scene where Gary attempts to escape the cage is cut, possibly because it is not encouraged and is dangerous.[7]

  • "Surf N' Turf" - In the UK version, Mr. Krabs does not smash the bottles, due to the dangerous action of the scene.[citation needed]
  • "Karen's Virus" - In the UK, Plankton's line, "It's probably a suicide mission" was removed due to "suicide" being an inappropriate word.[8]
  • The Grill is Gone” - In the UK, the scene where SpongeBob jumps on top of the grill and kisses it is cut, due to the dangerous action of the scene, which also meant shortening Mr. Krabs’ line, “And so, after some quick thinkin’ and fancy racerin’, I won me grill back.” to simply, “And so, I won me grill back.”
  • The String” - In the UK, the scene where SpongeBob’s eyes catch on fire and he used hot mustard as a fire extinguisher is cut, due to the dangerous action of the scene.

  • "King Plankton" - In the UK, the scene where Plankton tells the former chimp king to put the shrinking belt on themselves and the other chimps while they are falling out of the aquarium is cut out for unknown reasons. This cut was made for seizure reasons.[citation needed]
  • "The Krusty Bucket" - The scene where Plankton tries to flush Mr. Krabs down a toilet while they're fighting in the restroom is cut in the UK, possibly because it could be imitated by younger audiences.[10] Despite this, both Plankton and Mr. Krabs have been shown trying to flush each other down toilets in "Plankton's Army" and that episode didn't get censored at all in the UK.
  • Insecurity Guards” - In the UK, the Lady officer’s final line, “Okay, that’s enough, weirdo.” is shortened to simply, “Okay, that’s enough.”

  • "Mind the Gap" - In the UK, the scenes where Squidward uses a drill on SpongeBob's teeth and SpongeBob drinks bubble soap are cut out due to the dangerous action of the scenes. In the scene in which Squidward pushes SpongeBob's teeth together, it works instead of the teeth pushing Squidward away, and in the scene in which the screw falls loose, the screw and holes in SpongeBob's teeth are removed.[11].
  • "Jolly Lodgers" - In the UK and Ireland, the scene with Squidward stinging everyone is altered so the background does not flash, possibly due to causing seizures for viewers.[citation needed]
SpongeBob in RandomLand 173
  • "SpongeBob in RandomLand" - In the UK version (and the international digital version), Squidward only opens the first two doors instead of three. The third door showed Red Mist Squidward behind it, which could have been cut possibly because of the inappropriate nature, what the scene references or the fact that the scene may look too scary for kids. The scene later got removed from reruns in the USA in November 2019, being replaced with Baby Squidward.[12] Canadian airings on YTV still air this episode uncut as of December 2019.[13]
  • "Lighthouse Louie" - In the UK version, SpongeBob does not chew the hat up and blow it up, he just blows it up into the boxes, due to the dangerous action of the scene.
