A complete list of renamed episodes in SpongeBob SquarePants. Throughout the series, there have been some instances of episode titles getting renamed because either the creators didn't like the original title or the original title was deemed inappropriate.

Note: Episodes with alternate names on the TV guide listings do not count. For an episode list with the official episode titles, see List of episodes.

Season 1

Season 2

You Wish title
  • "Shanghaied" - This episode was originally going to be called "SpongeBob's You Wish Spectacular Special." The Season 2 DVD Box set still keeps this title, and on Sky this episode is called "You Wish (aka Shanghaied)."

Season 3

  • "The Algae's Always Greener" - This episode was originally called "Success for Losers."[11]
  • "Clams" - This episode was originally called "SpongeJaws."[12][13]
  • "The Camping Episode" - This episode was originally going to be called "Squid Gets Mauled," but was then changed to "The Camping Episode," most likely because the original title of the episode was deemed too violent and unfriendly for kids. It may also be because the title would have very little to do with the actual episode.[14][12][13][15]
  • "Plankton's Army" - This episode was originally called "Plankton's Last Stand."[12][13]

Season 4

20190305 170903
  • "Shell of a Man" - This episode was originally called "Molting." On Nickelodeon USA's tapes, it's still listed as "Molting" in the end credits, implying that it was made from an early version.
  • "Have You Seen This Snail?" - The episode was originally known as "Where's Gary?" The DVD and VHS releases for this episode still refer to it by this title.

"The New Leaf"

  • "New Leaf" - This episode originally had "The" at the beginning of the title, making the title The New Leaf. It was called "The New Leaf" during the Best Day Ever marathon. It is also called "The New Leaf" on the closing credits and on the Nickelodeon schedule.
    • Comcast uses this title as well.
      • On recent airings of this episode, the description says the name of this episode is "The New Leaf."

Amazon Video using the SpyBob name (also notice the   in the description for the episode)

  • "Spy Buddies" - The original title for this episode was going to be called "SpyBob" but later, it was changed to "Spy Buddies."
    • Dish Network, Time Warner Cable, the Nickelodeon schedule, and Amazon Video mistakenly use the original title instead of the final.
    • This title is also used by iTunes.

Season 6

  • "SpongeBob SquarePants vs. The Big One" - The original title was "The Secret of Kahuna Laguna," and outside the USA, the 2nd title was "SpongeBob SquarePants and the Big Wave." In some other countries, including Latvia, Ukraine, Australia, and Germany, they still use the original title.
"To SquarePants or Not To" title card used on Amazon and several countries.
  • "To SquarePants or Not to SquarePants" - This episode's title is sometimes shortened by a word. This is because:
    • On the To SquarePants or Not to SquarePants DVD-credits, this episode is listed as "To SquarePants or Not to."
    • In Southeast Asia, Turkey, and Poland, this title card only says: "To SquarePants or Not to" because the original title is considered too long. This also happens on the Amazon Prime Video and Netflix versions.
"Stuck in the Freezer" title card
  • "Truth or Square" - The original title of this episode was "Stuck in the Freezer" and "The Great Escape!" There is a "Stuck in the Freezer" title card that can be seen in many countries, including Latin America, Spain, and Brazil. The book still uses "The Great Escape" title.
Original title card.
  • "The Clash of Triton" - This episode was originally titled "Neptune's Party," and a title card for "Neptune's Party" was even made before they decided to change it to "The Clash of Triton."[16] The title card can still be seen in Lithuania, Asia, Germany, France, Norway, Poland, and all of Central and Eastern Europe.

Season 7

Season 8

  • "Frozen Face-Off" - The original title was "The Great Sleigh Race."[19] It may have been possible that they changed the name because the original name was similar to "The Great Snail Race."
  • "Restraining SpongeBob" - The original title was "Whispering Tentacles."[20]
  • "Fiasco!" - The original title was "The Priceless Patty."[20]
  • "It's a SpongeBob Christmas!" - This episode was originally intended to be called "Plankton's Christmas Wish" and then "Tis The Season to Be Jerky."[21] In Israel, it is still called "Plankton's Christmas Wish," instead of "It's a SpongeBob Christmas!"

Season 9

Now TV lists this episode under its original title.
  • "Goodbye, Krabby Patty?" - This episode was originally titled "Factory Fresh."[25][26] The book still uses this title. The episode was also originally called "Goodbye Krusty Krab."[27] This title change was for marketing purposes.[28] The episode is available on the UK streaming service Now TV under its original title, "Factory Fresh."
  • "Salsa Imbecilicus" - This episode was originally titled "Idiot Sauce,"[29] but was changed because it sounded a bit too mean.[30]
  • "The Whole Tooth" - This episode was originally titled "The Tooth, The Whole Tooth, and Nothing But the Tooth."[citation needed] The title was shortened, most likely for being too long. However, the Russian dub still uses this title.

Season 10

  • "Unreal Estate" - This episode was originally titled "House Hunters."[31] This name change is most likely to avoid affiliation with the TV show called House Hunters.
  • "Patrick's Coupon" - This episode was originally titled "Patrick's Coupon Day," but the title was changed later on. Digiturk and Telia still keep this title.

Season 11

Clean'LivinNickcom

"Clean Livin'"

  • "Krusty Kleaners" - The original titles for this episode were "Clean Livin'," "The Krusty Cleaners," and "The Krusty Kleaners." Sky, Digiturk, and the Nickelodeon website still uses "Clean Livin'."[33]
  • "Bubbletown" - This episode was originally titled "It's Bubbletown."[34]
