A complete list of renamed episodes in SpongeBob SquarePants. Throughout the series, there have been some instances of episode titles getting renamed before release because either the creators did not like the original title or the original title was deemed inappropriate.

Season 1[]
- "Help Wanted" - According to a piece of concept art, the title was originally "Sponge Overboard"[1] and "Pilot."[2]
- "Reef Blower" - According to concept art, the title was originally "Pilot Extension," referencing the fact that this fills in the rest of the 11 minute runtime that this and "Help Wanted" are combined.[3]
- "Tea at the Treedome" - According to a production painting, this episode was originally titled "Tea at the Tree Dome," with the words "Tree" and "Dome" being two different words before being combined into one.[4]
- "Bubblestand" - According to Stephen Hillenburg's pitch bible, this episode was originally titled "Bubbles."[5] In the Croatian dub, this episode's title is "Mjehurići," which when translated to English, still uses the original title.
- "Jellyfishing" - According to Stephen Hillenburg's pitch bible, the title was supposed to be "Jelly Fishing."[6]
- "Plankton!" - According to the audio commentary, this episode was originally going to be titled "Deep Cover."[7]
- "Naughty Nautical Neighbors" - This episode was originally titled "Friendly Fire," as seen in some production art.[8]
- "Home Sweet Pineapple" - This episode was originally titled "Home." and/or "Home Sweet Home" [9]
- "Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy" - This episode was originally titled "The Return of Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy."[10]

- "Sandy's Rocket" - According to an Instagram post by Derek Drymon, this episode was based on a short story by Ray Bradbury, and was initially pitched under the title "Space Show" on June 23, 1998, but was then revised under its current title a day later.[12]
- "Squeaky Boots" - In some pieces of production art, this episode was originally titled "Squeeky Boots."
- "F.U.N." - This episode was originally titled "My Fair Plankton."[13] This original title is a reference to the 1964 musical comedy-drama film My Fair Lady.
- "MuscleBob BuffPants" - According to production art, this episode was originally called "Pump It Up."
- "Squidward the Unfriendly Ghost" - According to Sherm Cohen, this episode was originally going to be called "Squidward's House of Wax."[14][15]
- "The Chaperone" - According to concept art, the episode was originally titled "Chaperone."[16]
- "Employee of the Month" - Sometimes, YTV accidentally lists this episode as "Chumbucket" instead of its actual name. The Chum Bucket is not even seen or mentioned in this episode.
- "Scaredy Pants" - This episode was originally titled "SpongeBob's Halloween."[citation needed]
- "I Was a Teenage Gary" - This episode was originally titled "Critical Condition."[17][18]
- "SB-129" - This episode was originally titled "SpongeBob 3000" according to pieces of concept art[19] and the old Nickelodeon website[20] or "How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Sponge."[21] The second original title is a reference to the 1964 black comedy film Dr. Strangelove (also known as Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb).

- "Dying for Pie" - This episode was originally called "Biscuits."[44]
- "Imitation Krabs" - This episode was originally going to be titled "Two Krabs Are Better Than One," according to some production art.[45] The reason why it was changed is unknown, but it was most likely because of the title being too long. It was also going to be called "Robot Krabs"[46]
- "Wormy" - This episode was originally going to be titled "Shoo Fly."[47]
- "Patty Hype" - This episode was originally titled "Color Patties" and "Color Patty's."
- "Prehibernation Week" - This episode was originally called "Sardines."
- "Life of Crime" - This episode was intially called "Partners in Crime."[48]
- "Christmas Who?" - This episode was originally titled "Patchy The Pirate Presents: The SpongeBob SquarePants Christmas Special."[49] This alternate title is used by various cable TV providers and the Nickelodeon website.[50] Amazon Prime Video shortens this title to "The SpongeBob Christmas Special."[51]
- "Survival of the Idiots" - According to the audio commentary, the original title was going to be "Survival of the Morons."[52]
- "I'm Your Biggest Fanatic" - This episode was originally titled "Fanatics."[53]
- "Shanghaied" - This episode was originally going to be called "SpongeBob's You Wish Spectacular Special" with "You Wish" appearing within the original Patchy segments. The Season 2 DVD box set still keeps this title, and on Sky this episode is called "You Wish (aka Shanghaied)."
- "Welcome to the Chum Bucket" - This episode was originally titled "The Big Game."[54]

- "Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy V" - This episode's working title is "Superfriends," as seen in production art, TV listings, and certain DVD releases.
- "Clams" - The original name of this episode was "SpongeJaws,"[75][76][77] a pun of the Jaws movie series.
- "Ugh" - This special episode is also listed as "SpongeBob B.C. (Before Comedy)."
- "Born Again Krabs" - The original name of this episode was "A Penny Saved."[78]
- "I Had an Accident" - This episode was originally titled "Safety Freak"[79] or "Safety Freak SpongeBob." Some television guides, such as Dish Network, use this title. It is known on Charter and Foxtel as simply "Safety Freak."[citation needed] The Comcast description of the episode calls the episode "Safety Freak (I Had an Accident)." It is unknown why Comcast would put "I Had an Accident" in parentheses in the title.
- On old YTV airings of this episode, it was originally listed as its actual title, but, for unknown reasons, the YTV listings changed the title back to "Safety Freak" in 2013.
- AT&T U-Verse used to list the original title, but like the YTV example, it was changed to "Safety Freak" in 2019.
- "Krabby Land" - This episode's working title was "Krabbyland." This is also seen in the Sponge for Hire DVD-credits and the SpongeBob Comics #52. comic book.
- "The Camping Episode" - This episode was originally going to be titled "Squid Gets Mauled."[80][81][82][83]
- This was likely because the sea bear's attack on Squidward was not as relevant enough to the plot (as it only happened near the end) as SpongeBob and Patrick camping on their front lawn.
- This could also be because the latter title was not family-friendly, since it is violent in nature.

- "Shell of a Man" - During production, this episode was originally titled "Molting." The case for the screener version of the Fear of a Krabby Patty VHS uses this title. American television broadcasts from 2019 onward also list the title as "Molting" in the on-screen credits.
- "Have You Seen This Snail?" - This episode was originally known as "Where's Gary?" The DVD and VHS releases for this episode still refer to it by this title.
- "Good Neighbors" - This episode was originally shortened to be named as "Good Neighbor" and a different title "Security." The first original name ended up being used on the Where's Gary?, Season 4 Volume 1, Double Feature Volume 2, Triple Pack 4, and Big Hits: Volume 2 DVDs.
- "Funny Pants" - This episode was originally going to be named "Unfunny Pants," but was later changed to "Laughbox" when Nickelodeon announced the episode.[citation needed]
- "Dunces and Dragons" - This episode was originally titled "Lost in Time."[90]
- "Enemy In-Law" - This episode was originally called "My Worst Friend's Wedding."[91]
- "Patrick SmartPants" - This episode was originally called "Abracamoron." The original title is still used on the Polish TV guide and on Amazon Prime Video.

- "Ghost Host" - The episode was originally titled as "Ghost House." The original title is used on the YTV broadcast logs.

- In Southeast Asia (including Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macao), Turkey, Poland, and all of Central and Eastern Europe, the title card only reads "To SquarePants or Not to" because the original title is considered too long. This also happens on the Amazon Prime Video and Netflix versions.
- "Grandpappy the Pirate" - This episode was originally titled "Krabs' Grandad."[116][117]
- "Gullible Pants" - This episode's original titles were "GulliBob"[118][119] on the pitch storyboard and "Gul-I-Bob."[120]

- "The Clash of Triton" - This episode was originally titled "Neptune's Party," and a title card for "Neptune's Party" was even made before they decided to change it to "The Clash of Triton."[124] The title card can still be seen in Lithuania, Asia, Germany, France, Poland, Scandinavia, Israel, and all of Central and Eastern Europe.

- "Lost in Bikini Bottom" - This episode was originally titled "The Shortcut."[142] In the French dub, this episode's title is "Le Raccourci," and in the German dub, this episode's title is "Die Abkürzung." When both of these titles are translated to English, they still use the original title.
- "Company Picnic" - This episode was originally called "Dueling Picnics."[143]
- "Pull Up a Barrel" - This episode was originally going to be titled ""Navy Days" or "Krab & Bull Story."
- "Sanctuary!" - This episode was originally called "One Snail Sponge."[144]
- "Sold!" - This episode was originally going to be titled "Nick Fishkins: I'll Buy Your Home." Some UK TV listings use this original title.[145]
- "Goodbye, Krabby Patty?" - This episode was originally titled "Factory Fresh."[146][147] The book still uses this title. The episode was also originally called "Goodbye Krusty Krab."[148] This title change was for marketing purposes.[149] The episode is available on the UK streaming service Now TV under its original title, "Factory Fresh."
- "Salsa Imbecilicus" - This episode was originally going to be called "Idiot Sauce,"[150] but the title was changed because it was deemed that it sounded "too mean."[151] It may also have been because the Latin scientific term of "Salsa Imbecilicus" was more fitting, seeing as how Plankton created the sauce in a science lab.
- "The Whole Tooth" - This episode was originally titled "The Tooth, The Whole Tooth, and Nothing but the Tooth."[152][153] The title was most likely shortened for being too long. However, the Russian dub still uses this title.

- "Unreal Estate" - This episode was originally titled "House Hunters,"[154] but the title was changed most likely to avoid affiliation with the TV show of the same name.
- "House Worming" and "SpongeBob's Place" - "House Worming" and "SpongeBob's Place" were originally going to be titled "Chateau SpongeBob."[155]
