The Game Boy Advance version of Lights, Camera, Pants! is a SpongeBob SquarePants video game for the Game Boy Advance. Unlike the console version, this version is a 2D sidescrolling platformer. This version was developed by WayForward Technologies and published by THQ.

An episode of the popular series The New Adventures of Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy is supposed to be filmed in Bikini Bottom, but Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy do not show up. With the show in danger of being canceled, the show's producer, Gill Hammerstein, enlists SpongeBob and his friends to find the two superheroes, while also giving them roles in the process.

Gameplay[]

The game has four playable characters, each with their own set of moves.

  • SpongeBob SquarePants
    • He can whirl his arms to defeat enemies at the front and back simultaneously. His special move is the ability to inflate himself to fall down slowly.
  • Patrick Star
    • He can throw ice cream at enemies and can ground pound on blocks to destroy them.
  • Sandy Cheeks
    • She can punch enemies and walk on spikes.
  • Squidward Tentacles
    • He can play his clarinet to produce sour notes that hit multiple enemies. He can perform a double jump.

Levels[]

The game consists of four worlds to explore:

Each world consists of four levels, most of which are platforming stages, although there are a few that are either driving stages or mini-games. Once per world, a role is given to the character being used at the end of the level. After beating all four worlds, the Final Game is unlocked, where the player can play through the episode of the show through a series of mini-games; here, the characters used in the levels are automatically chosen based on the roles obtained throughout the game.

In addition to the main game, there are also five mini-games that can be purchased in the shop, known as Gil's Trailer, which also sells extra lives. These items are bought with Golden Stars, which can be collected in levels.

There are two difficulty levels in the game, Easy and Normal. In Easy, the characters are almost invincible, while in Normal, each character is out in only two hits.

Trivia[]

General[]

  • This was the 5th SpongeBob SquarePants video game to released for the Game Boy Advance, following SuperSponge, Revenge of the Flying Dutchman, Battle for Bikini Bottom, and The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie, which was also developed by WayForward Technologies.
    • The game reuses SpongeBob and Patrick's sprites as well as a few other assets from The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie.
    • On the other hand, Sandy and Squidward's sprites would later be reused in the DS version of Creature from the Krusty Krab, also from the same developer.
  • This version is the only appearance of Gill Hammerstein's 2D design.
  • The Sound Stage is the only world in this game that is not directly based on any location from the series.
  • Mr. Krabs' only appearance in this version is in the Krusty Krab mini-game as a non-playable character. He does not have any dialogue.
  • Plankton is not seen or mentioned anywhere in this version of the game. Despite this, he is still featured in both versions of the cover art.
    • He is also seen in the instruction booklet alongside Mr. Krabs, who is also not playable in this version.
  • This is the only GBA game where the Flying Dutchman appears, but is not fought. However, his ghost pirates appear as common enemies throughout the game.
  • The fights against Man Ray are presented as rhythm mini-games instead of traditional boss battles.
    • This is the only GBA game where he physically appears.
    • He was only mentioned in the GBA version of SuperSponge, although he did appear in the PS1 version.
  • The Dirty Bubble makes a cameo in the game over screen.
  • Mrs. Puff's Boating School is called Mrs. Puff's Driving School in this game, and serves as a tutorial for driving levels.
    • This is also Mrs. Puff's first appearance in a GBA game.
    • SpongeBob can be used in the driving stages despite not having a license.

Episode references[]

  • SpongeBob's winning animation is taken from his dance in "Jellyfish Jam."
  • The superhero costumes from "Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy V" can be seen in the Mermalair.
    • The Raymobile used by Man Ray is also from this episode.
    • The game over screen featuring Man Ray and the Dirty Bubble together is also likely inspired by this episode.
  • The bullies that appear in Goo Lagoon are the same pair of thugs from "Krabby Land."
