Synopsis

The episode begins with Patrick watching television, specifically the Sir Urchin and Snail Fail show, which he wants to watch with SpongeBob. Patrick walks in front of his house door and finds SpongeBob. SpongeBob expects that Patrick wants to watch the show with him, but Patrick is curious about what is behind the door. SpongeBob states it is his library and that it is a playground for Patrick's brain. Patrick thinks it is a literal playground and starts to throw and kicks books, but SpongeBob tells him the variety of books that he should read. Patrick starts to read these books, eventually reaching the point where his brain takes the words away from the books to structure an enormous knowledge. Eventually, all of the books run out and the contents of them are stored in Patrick's head, which is now abnormally large.

SpongeBob thinks he has had enough of reading and thinks Patrick should go outside, but Patrick's brain blocks the door. Patrick suggests different ideas that he learned from reading the books, such as an electromagnet to synthesize the iinformation, sliming his head with Gary's slime, and acting as a witch doctor, with no progress. Eventually, Patrick suggests to exit the area, he has to dumb down, so SpongeBob rebuilds the television and makes Patrick watch Sir Urchin and Snail Fail. Eventually, in Patrick's head, Sir Urchin and Snail Fail are both destroying the large city made of words in Patrick's head and Patrick's head shrinks down.

SpongeBob restores the words back to the books and Patrick's brain resumes being a couch potato. However, Patrick finds out the books again and starts throwing them once more, eventually ending the episode with SpongeBob getting hit in the mouth by a book ironically titled "The End."

General

• This marks the 450th episode segment of the series.
• This episode premiered on Mark Hamill's 67th birthday, 10 years after Drawn to Life: SpongeBob SquarePants Edition was released in Australia, six years after the re-release of The Seascape Capers, Friend or Foe?, SpongeBob's Atlantis SquarePantis, SpongeBob's Pest of the West, and SpongeBob vs. The Big One DVDs, and three years after "Company Picnic" premiered.
• Ironically, despite being called "Library Cards," none are mentioned or seen in the episode.
  • However, the title could be referring to SpongeBob and Patrick's antics in the library, as the word card also means "a person who is odd or amusing," which describes SpongeBob and Patrick.
• Patrick has visited SpongeBob's library before in "Boating School," "Something Smells," and "Sportz?," but he acts like he has never seen it until this episode.
  • Furthermore, Patrick does not even know what the word "library" means at the beginning of the episode, but says he has overdue library books in "Rule of Dumb."
• Very little characters appear in this episode, with six in total making an appearance. Even less characters appear in-person, as Sir Urchin and Snail Fail are only shown on TV.
• A majority of this episode takes place inside SpongeBob's house, as the outdoors are only shown at the beginning of the episode for at least 30 seconds.
• This is one of the few episodes to showcase Gary's interest in reading, some others being "Sleepy Time," "Gary Takes a Bath," "Rock-a-Bye Bivalve," and "Pet Sitter Pat."
  • He is shown reading a book called Cooking Without Salt, alluding to the fact that salt kills snails. This phobia was previously alluded to in "Pet Sitter Pat."
• This episode marks the second time Patrick becomes smart when reading books. The first was "Patrick SmartPants."

Cultural references

• When SpongeBob shows Patrick the contents of his library, he shows Leo Tolstoy's War and Peace as an example of an unabridged book.
  • The novel is later parodied at the end of the episode, where a book called Clam and Peace appears.
• One of the books shown at the end of the episode is called Moby D, referencing Herman Melville's novel Moby-Dick.
• Another book shown at the episode's end is called The Old Fish and the Sea, referencing Ernest Hemingway's novel The Old Man and the Sea.
