Squidward is working in his garden until he accidentally pulls out SpongeBob from a bush, mistaking him for a banana pepper. Squidward unintentionally gets an ink stain on his shirt after squirting ink on himself due to his scream from seeing SpongeBob. Squidward prepares to go to the laundromat, but SpongeBob wants to join him, resulting in Squidward quickly running to the laundromat. SpongeBob runs into him anyways, as the two notice that everyone in Bikini Bottom is at the laundromat. Squidward finds an available washing machine, but Patrick puts his pants in to use the machine. With him being left naked, Squidward ties SpongeBob around him.
Larry prepares to do his laundry, but is pulled into his bag by a stench inside. Meanwhile, Sandy shows up to wash and dry herself inside her helmet. Old Man Walker slips on a soap spill, causing him to fall into a basket and being ironed. Rube shows up to wash his hat, followed by Slappy grabbing his skin from a dryer and putting it on. Squidward steps up to the dryer and tries to remove the stain with some spray, but the stain keeps moving while he sprays it. Squidward tries to put the shirt in anyways, but the stain still shows up on the back. After SpongeBob suggests of him wanting to help, Squidward gets the idea to use SpongeBob to scrub the stain off.
Plankton shows up by a washer and dumps his dirty test tubes into the machine, despite Karen being against it. Plankton activates the washer and it quickly malfunctions, with Karen telling him that he forgot to rinse off mutation formulas from the tubes. The washing machine turns sentient and takes other people's laundry, and starts to terrorize the laundromat, going after several Bikini Bottomites and their laundry. Due to its increased power from sucking in more clothes, some of the clothes turn sentient and attack the Bikini Bottomites. After utilizing more laundry to its advantage, the washing machine zaps away several people's clothes. Meanwhile, Squidward has finally gotten the stain off of his shirt, only for it to show up on his undershirt. Squidward gets further irritated at the stain as the washing machine approaches him. Squidward notices the spray next to him and tries to remove the stain again. With the washing machine behind Squidward, the stain jumps inside the machine, with the machine soon malfunctioning and exploding, releasing all of the clothes.
The Bikini Bottomites celebrate with the washer having died down and their clothes being clean. Squidward's shirt shows up, now clean, and he grabs it, but is soon stopped by everyone to thank him for saving them. Squidward tries to leave, but the Bikini Bottomites cheer him on. They all participate in a song as Squidward tries to leave the laundromat again. SpongeBob follows him and exits the place before Squidward. Squidward is launched into a soap box by a cowboy on a seahorse and loudly sneezes afterwards, squirting out ink all over the laundromat. The Bikini Bottomites get mad at Squidward and attack him, as he ends up folded on a table, next to Old Man Walker.

When pointing at Rube's cleaned hat, SpongeBob makes an almost identical expression to the one he makes in season 3's "Krusty Krab Training Video" while anticipating for the narrator to reveal the secret formula.
Squidward says "Out, darn spot!" when trying to remove the ink stain from his shirt, referencing the quote "Out, damned spot!" said by the doctor while trying to cure Lady Macbeth from her sickness in the 1623 play written by William Shakespeare, Macbeth.
The laundry detergent in the orange and blue box is a reference to the popular detergent brand, Tide.
