I'll never forget your 100% all-secret patty, secretly assembled with undersea cheese, pickles, lettuce, tomato, onion, all secretly steamed between two fluffy seaweed-sea buns.

— SpongeBob describing the burger, in the episode "Plankton!"
This is the page about the Krusty Krab burger. For other uses, see Krabby Patty (disambiguation).
Object

The Krabby Patty is the Krusty Krab's signature and popular food item. It is a meatless hamburger of sorts made from seaweed-sea buns, undersea vegetables, condiments, and a patty; it can also be ordered with cheese. The ingredients of the patty itself are purposely kept secret throughout the entire series, but creator Stephen Hillenburg had stated that the patties are entirely vegetarian.[1] It was created by Mr. Krabs and Plankton.[2]

It is the best-known item at the restaurant and the most famous food cooked in Bikini Bottom. It first appears in "Help Wanted" and is what SpongeBob cooks most of the time at his job.

The Krabby Patty is a basic plot element that contributes to the Krusty Krab's existence. A running gag throughout the series is Plankton coming up with plans to steal the Krabby Patty secret formula or a Krabby Patty to analyze the formula with an invention, but always ending up with failures.

The Secret Formula (Splashtastic Adventures)

Ingredients

The Krabby Patty is made out of a frozen patty with fresh lettuce, crisp onions and tomatoes with sea cheese, pickles, mustard, ketchup, and a Krabby Patty secret formula, though said secret formula has never been revealed in the series. SpongeBob mentioned multiple times that 'love' is an essential ingredient that does indeed impact the taste of the sandwich; to the point where King Neptune's patties were disgusting since "perfect patties[3] are made with love, not Poseidon Powder (magic)."[4] The patties are vegan, similar to a veggie burger; Stephen Hillenburg and executive producer Vincent Waller have both stated that the patties have no animal product whatsoever in them.[3][1]

The first Krabby Patty was made by Mr. Krabs and Plankton when they were kids, and it was by accident after Krabs and Plankton broke their friendship and became archenemies. Still, Plankton is unaware that he was directly responsible for the accidental creation of the Krabby Patty. [5] In the episode "Just One Bite," it is revealed that the Krusty Krab has a patty vault where many Krabby Patties are stored. In this episode, Krabby Patties are also shown to be addictive.

Ingredients

The Secret Formula:

  • Flour
  • Barnacle Shavings (For Calcium)
  • Salt[6]
  • Turmeric
  • Love (Cooking With Passion)
  • Seahorse Radish (Secret Ingredient)
  • Chum[2]
  • Seaweed Paste
  • Broad Bean
  • Chopped Sea Onions
  • Bread Crumbs (For Shape)
  • Liquid Smoke
  • Chili Pepper

Toppings

Items to put on a Krabby Patty:

  • Seaweed Bun (Bottom Bun)
  • Patty
  • Sea Lettuce
  • Sea Cheese
  • Sea Onion
  • Sea Tomato
  • Sea Ketchup
  • Sea Mustard
  • Sea Pickles
  • Seaweed Bun (Top Bun)

The Krabby Patty secret formula is where the ingredients are listed. According to SpongeBob in "Pickles the correct order of ingredients on a Krabby Patty is "bun(bottom bun), patty, lettuce, cheese, onion, tomato, ketchup, mustard, pickles, bun(top bun)," from bottom to top, though other orders have been depicted throughout the series as well.

Patty variations

There have been many variations of the Krabby Patty throughout the series with many unique features that set them apart from the regular burger. However, few have made more than one appearance.

Health hazards

The Krabby Patty is known for being extremely unhealthy and fattening. They can also have a dangerous and unfortunate side effect. When way too many Krabby Patties are eaten at one time, the consumer will become obese in the thigh area and explode. This happens to Squidward in the "Just One Bite," when he breaks into the patty vault and eats too many Krabby Patties at once.

The SpongeBob Movie Sponge Out of Water 065

Doctors say it is so unhealthy that a fish will be gone in a week due to eating too many Krabby Patties.

Its health hazards are also quickly shown in the feature film The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water, in the introduction as Burger Beard states that it is so unhealthy that a fish will be gone in a week due to eating too many Krabby Patties.

However, if one does not have a Krabby Patty after an extensive period, they will suffer from Krabby Patty withdrawal since their body would crave Krabby Patties. If one does not eat a Krabby Patty during the withdrawal, they will mumble about it for the next three and a half minutes like Patrick does in "Pat No Pay." Krabby Patty withdrawal is due to thinking of the Krabby Patty while addicted to it, which causes severe stomach aches.

Real-life inspirations

Publications such as USA Today have named it among other fictional foods that many have wanted to exist in real life, but according to the New York Daily News, there are four restaurants that serve a similar burger to the seen one in the show. These burgers include the Snow Crab Crispy Rice, Phuket Fantasy, Angry Crab Benedict, and Soft Shell Crab Taco.

The Krabby Patties have also inspired real-life gummy confectionery treats, primarily in New England. In 2008, a doctor with Texas A&M Health Science Center College of Medicine warned parents to be aware of where the candy their child consumes is produced due to contamination then found in Chinese milk; SpongeBob Gummy Krabby Patties were among those candies produced in China. In 2019, a reporter with the student newspaper of Capital University gave the gummy candies a rating of a 2 out of 10 in their review of Halloween candy.[citation needed]

The Krabby Patty has been used by Katy Perry as a second costume on the red carpet at New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art. In The SpongeBob Musical, the Krabby Patty was portrayed by an actor on stage at the Palace Theatre.

Popular fast-food restaurant - Wendy's partnered up with Nickelodeon in a "Krabby Patty Kollab," sponsoring SpongeBob's 25th anniversary in which their menu portrays the burger itself with Wendy's fresh produce, including a "secret Krabby Patty sauce", which has yet to be revealed.[7]

Intelligence

Big Krabby Patty

The big Krabby Patty from the episode "Just One Bite."

Although Krabby Patties are typically depicted as inanimate objects, they are shown to be sentient creatures in certain appearances (though usually either from dreams or genetic mutations).

  • "Just One Bite" - Squidward can be seen spending the rest of his life with a female Krabby Patty. He takes the Krabby Patty on a date at Sublime Seafoods, marries the patty, and has a child with the patty. They eventually grow old together, but it is later revealed that everything was just a dream, which makes Squidward want to break into the Krusty Krab in order to get a Krabby Patty.
  • "Fear of a Krabby Patty" - After working at the Krusty Krab nonstop for several days straight, SpongeBob visits Plankton at the Chum Bucket who is pretending to be a psychologist. Plankton hypnotizes SpongeBob which causes him to fall asleep, and a sentient Krabby Patty named Patty appears in his dreams. This patty tells SpongeBob that it will always be with him, and gives SpongeBob a cookie pizza and chocolate milk. SpongeBob also hallucinates several people to be giant sentient Krabby Patties.
  • Creature from the Krusty Krab - Supersized Patty.
  • SpongeBob and the Clash of Triton - Krabzilla and Krabby Patty minions.
  • "The Krabby Patty That Ate Bikini Bottom" - Mr. Krabs borrows Sandy's growth serum and decides to use it on an ordinary Krabby Patty. However, he uses far too much serum which causes the Krabby Patty to become a giant monster. The giant Krabby Patty eats the Krusty Krab and eventually many citizens of Bikini Bottom, but it is eventually stopped when SpongeBob absorbs the contents of the Krabby Patty into his body.
  • SpongeBob HeroPants - Some sentient Krabby Patties appear as enemies.
  • "Goodbye, Krabby Patty?" - When Don Grouper is helping the Krusty Krab come up with a slogan, three sentient Krabby Patties are shown on a hologram. One Krabby Patty is shown being eaten by Incidental 37B, and the other two patties are shown at the edge of a cliff, where one patty pushes the other one over the edge into a mouth on the ground at the base of the cliff.
  • "Food Con Castaways" - While SpongeBob is hiding from Patrick, Mr. Krabs, and Squidward to prevent them from eating their last Krabby Patty, SpongeBob begins to hallucinate after his stomach growls from extreme hunger. In the hallucination, the Krabby Patty is alive and it tells SpongeBob to forget about Food Con and eat the patty. When SpongeBob is about to eat the patty, he snaps out of his hallucination and proceeds to not eat the patty.
  • "We Makin' Krabby Patties" - Flipper.
  • "Trident Trouble" - After SpongeBob accidentally picks up Neptune's trident, he goes to the Krusty Krab and creates dancing Krabby Patties with the trident. Mr. Krabs tells SpongeBob to make more since the customers love it, but SpongeBob accidentally angers the trident and creates angry Krabby Patties that wreak havoc around the restaurant.
  • The Krabby Patty Chronicles - Flipper and Felicia.
  • "Moving Bubble Bass" - When Bubble Bass imagines himself hosting a talk show, he is seen interviewing a sentient Krabby Patty. Bubble Bass states that he did not particularly enjoy the Krabby Patty that he had consumed the previous night, and the patty jokingly states that Mr. Krabs will give him a refund. However, Mama Bass interrupts and it is revealed that the talk show was simply part of Bubble Bass' imagination.
  • SpongeBob Comics No. 79
  • "Dream Hoppers" - While SpongeBob is dreaming, he creates several sentient Krabby Patties to jump out of a plane. One of the Krabby Patties named Patty was also one the airplane. The aircraft spirals out of control when SpongeBob is fighting with the patty in the cockpit, which makes SpongeBob and the patty jump out of the plane. They land inside Patrick's dream, where SpongeBob and Patrick proceed to chase the patty inside Patrick's stomach. They later end up in Squidward's dream, where the Patty gets chased by a knight and jumps into Squidward's mouth, causing Squidward to wake up.
  • "Kitchen Sponge" - Plankton imagines himself creating an army of sentient Krabby Patties (looking exactly like the ones from "Dream Hoppers").
  • "My Friend Patty" - SpongeBob befriends a Krabby Patty that was made sentient by Sandy. The Krabby Patty constantly tries to get itself eaten.
