The store is a lime-green building in the shape of a Kelpshake bottle. It served as competition to the Krusty Krab for a short time. The restaurant has a basic interior with tiled floors, a counter, chairs and a big line. They were placed all over Bikini Bottom in random places, a new marketing strategy Mr. Barnacle of Barnacle Products Incorporated came up with. The Kelpshake logo displays "KELPSHAKE" in a red font.
The restaurant also offered various desserts and pastries as a secondary item for customers.
The restaurant has the ability to multiply. Despite the fact that it blocked traffic by spawning in the middle of a road, legal action was not taken until the end of the episode, and even then not for this reason.
Role in episode
When Mr. Krabs realizes his profits are down, he finds out that the new restaurant, Kelpshake, has been selling a beverage called a Kelp Shake that is making Mr. Krabs lose the money the customers usually spend on drinks. Mr. Krabs believes the owner to be Plankton at first, but Plankton proves him to be wrong. The Kelpshake restaurants then start to multiply, and Mr. Krabs and Plankton realize that they are on every block.
When Mr. Krabs and Plankton obtain a Kelpshake and try one, they realize that the Kelp Shakes have an ingredient in it that make them grow yellowish-green kelp fur all over their bodies. Soon everybody is affected with the same symptoms, and for this, the restaurants are banned and forever closed down as the city sucks each one dry of the hazardous materials used for their drinks.
Kelp Shake restaurants are a parody of Starbucks coffee chains, which have a reputation of suddenly popping up in large numbers all over the place.
At one point in the episode, there are three Kelp Shakes next to the Krusty Krab, two on the left and one on the right, but when SpongeBob talks to Mr. Krabs and Plankton inside the restaurant, two of the Kelp Shakes on the left outside are gone.
