Karen is one of the show's ten main characters, as well as one of the two main villains along with Plankton. She was created by Stephen Hillenburg in 1998, shortly after he married his wife, Karen Hillenburg. Stephen called his wife "the funniest person he knows"[1] and her sense of humor inspired the cartoon Karen's personality.
Doug Lawrence, the voice of Plankton and a writer on the show, helped Hillenburg develop Karen's character.[2] Lawrence notably decided that she and Plankton should be an inseparable duo, with Karen as the brains of the operation, always supplying Plankton with evil plans. In early episodes and up to "Plankton's Pet", Karen was an immobile computer screen stationed in the Chum Bucket; she eventually gained a "mobile form" that allows her to interact with other characters.
Karen and Plankton were both officially promoted to main characters in the credits of the 2004 film and have been part of the main cast ever since. Karen has also appeared in numerous tie-in books, comics, and video games.
