Karen Plankton and Sandy Cheeks are best friends as of "Girls' Night Out." Their relationship is a purely positive one. They are both level-headed and intelligent characters with an appreciation for inventions, which is why they are such good friends and have had many friendly interactions throughout the series. They are both part of the Gal Pals group, along with Mrs. Puff and Pearl.
Times of friendship[]
In "Perfect Chemistry," the two meet for the first time, and Sandy calls Karen beautiful. Karen is very happy about the compliment.
In "Frozen Face-Off," Sandy saves Karen from being frozen. When SpongeBob finds Karen in a block of ice, Sandy kicks the ice to break it, allowing Karen to reboot. Later, Sandy uses Karen's body as a battering ram to save Squidward, who has also been frozen in a block of ice. Throughout the ending of the episode, Karen is on the "good" side with Sandy, instead of with Plankton as usual.
In "Salsa Imbecilicus," Karen and Sandy are the only residents of Bikini Bottom who are not turned into idiots by the steam from Plankton's sauce. They work together to create a university, which eventually returns everyone else to their normal intelligence. This episode reveals that Karen knows where Sandy lives and that her home is called a treedome, implying that she has visited Sandy.
In "Girls' Night Out," it is revealed that Karen and Sandy are part of the Gal Pals group along with Mrs. Puff. After Sandy spends a week as an amoeba, she calls Karen to a meeting at a corner café to tell her and Mrs. Puff about it. However, when they meet up, Karen just talks about her stressful life with Plankton, while Mrs. Puff complains about all the stress SpongeBob causes for her. Sandy decides to make their girls' night out fun by pranking Plankton and SpongeBob.
In "A Cabin in the Kelp," Karen and Sandy go camping with Mrs. Puff and Pearl. Karen compliments Sandy's survival skills, saying "Good thing we have a Texas tornado among the Gal Pals. Who knew you could use a jellyfish as a recharger?"
In the campfire story sequence of "A Cabin in the Kelp," it is confirmed that Karen and Sandy have been part of the Gal Pals for many years. This additionally confirms that their friendship has lasted for a long time.
