"Just in Time for Christmas" is a The Patrick Star Show episode from season 1. In this episode, Patrick travels through time to find last-minute Christmas gifts for his family.

Characters[]

Synopsis[]

One Christmas night, Cecil cuts down a telephone pole and brings it back in to use as a Christmas tree. As the family prepare for Christmas, Squidina reminds Patrick that they are expecting better gifts than the garbage he gave them last year. Ouchie gives Patrick the idea to use the time closet to find Christmas gifts for everyone.

Just in Time for Christmas 062

Patrick visits the future.

Patrick gets the idea to get Cecil a shaver from the future. In the future, Captain Doug Quasar and Pat-Tron have went to a planet of wild trees to get a Christmas tree. Pat-Tron offers Quasar his Laser Phaser so he can cut them down. Quasar assumes he does not need it and fights the trees directly. Pat-Tron gives Patrick the laser, so he leaves, but Quasar shouts that he needs his laser back. Pat-Tron leaves awkwardly.

Back home, Patrick gets a gift for GrandPat. Ouchie activates the time closet and shows him a commercial for Caveman Jenkins' farms. Patrick goes and sneaks into his barn, where a sleeping pterodactyl is nesting. It eats Patrick and lays him in another egg. He steals an egg, and the pterodactyl chases after him, but he manages to shut it out of his room.

Next, Patrick wants to give Bunny something fun. He remembers Bunny telling him that "there's nothing more fun than a carnival" and time travels to a carnival in the 1800s. He sees a Fiji mermaid and a tattooed fish, so he steals one of the fish's tattoos. He runs into Mrs. Puff, who wants to kiss him because of his mistletoe hat. The Fiji mermaid slaps her, and she punches him away. Patrick notices him when he gets back home, and decides to give him as a pet to Squidina.

Everyone poses for a picture.

The next morning, Patrick gives his gifts to his family, and all of them are appreciated. Squidina asks Patrick where he got the money to pay for his gifts. Sudenly, a taxi drives through the wall, and the people Patrick stole from come out, demanding their items back. Patrick gives them gifts: various pieces of garbage, and GrandPat. Everyone tries to kiss Patrick, and Squidina points out that it happened because he was wearing a mistletoe hat. Everyone then says "Merry Christmas!" as Bunny takes a photo.

Production[]

In an interview with the Encyclopedia SpongeBobia Discord server on December 13, 2020, Dave Cunningham stated that there would be "more than one" holiday special coming up for the franchise. This episode ended up being one of them, alongside the other Christmas specials "The Ho! Ho! Horror" and "SpongeBob's Road to Christmas," as well as the Halloween specials "Are You Afraid of the Dork?" and "Terror at 20,000 Leagues."[3]

This episode was confirmed by Dave Cunningham on November 9, 2021.[4]

Promotional art[]

  • Created by Eliza Herndon.[5]

Poster art[]

  • Created by Jennifer Gleeson, (a freelance artist who worked on this and various other Nickelodeon series) being based on the events that occurred in the episode.[6]

Art[]

Character design[]

  • Pterodactyl sketches drawn by Ian Vazquez,[7] "Handsome Patrick" design by Simon Edwards and cleaned up by Mark Colangelo,[8] and final character designs by Chris DeRose[1][9] and Robertryan Cory.[2]

Storyboards[]

  • Boarded by Fred Osmond, and plussed by Eliza Herndon,[10][11] Simon Edwards, and Ian Vazquez.[12]

Production notes[]

Eliza Herndon:

  • This was one of storyboard plusser Eliza Herndon's favorite episodes to work on, and their first featuring the entire immediate Star family.[11]
    • "It's hard to choose a favorite member of the Star family, but Cecil is certainly up there. I love his brainless, auto-pilot confidence [while chopping off the telephone pole]. Very Cousin Eddy-esque."[13]
    • "Patrick has become one of my favorite characters to draw because he's got such a rubbery physique that's fun to manipulate, he has his cute moments, and I absolutely adore drawing stupid, brainless characters."[14]
      • "I love drawing Patrick because he's so malleable and has a ton of potential in his body structure. Lots of wrinkly antics (figuratively and literally)!"[15]
    • "A star on top completes all the scenery! I was so eager to fry GrandPat [on the Stars' Christmas tree] that I saved a bunch of refs of cartoon characters getting electrocuted in a folder titled "GrandPat Electrocution" until I just did it my own way... but the phrase GrandPat Electrocution still makes me laugh."[16]
    • According to Eliza Herndon, Bunny was originally going to appear in the episode walking in from stage left, but Dave Cunningham thought that she was coming out from the punch bowl, and suggested that to be done instead. Herndon said that the change was "WAY funnier, and came out great!!"[17]
    • "Getting to do these close-up paintings [of the chewed-up candle and underwear] was a real treat and I had SO MUCH FUN doing them!! This was when I realized just how much I love rendering and adding detail (to a fault). I'm glad they made the underwear less gross... and less yellow... and less moldy."[18]
    • While plussing the scene with Patrick walking to the door so he can hand out his presents to his family, Herndon stated that "dumb characters require dumb walk cycles."[19]
    • "Patrick's laugh [before going into the time closet for the first time] is an accurate reflection of me hearing Bill Fagerbakke's laugh for that scene--he somehow manages to make each delivery sound more stupid and more FUNNY than the last!"[20]
    • While plussing this episode's storyboards, "[Herndon] initially recorded [herself] wiggling [her] fingers in a wave motion with socks on my hands because [she] thought about this way too hard. Thank goodness for the simplicity that is Patrick's nubs."[21]
    • "This episode in particular was an incredible learning experience, from getting to know the Star family to understanding how drawings flow together and where to emphasize certain bits. I'm INCREDIBLY thankful for the support and opportunity!"[22]

Mrs

Mrs. Puff as the Bearded Blowfish.

  • Mrs. Puff appears as "the Bearded Blowfish," referencing the carnival stereotype of a "bearded lady."

  • Maurice, the Fiji mermaid, is based on a real-life attraction at carnivals.

GrandPat's pants are the same color as the mother pterodactyl.
