Biography[]

Early life[]

Born in Oxnard, California, Combs was reared in Lompoc and was the fifth of nine children born to Jean Owens (formerly Sullins; 1921–1986) and Eugene "Gene" Combs (1922–1999). His parents were both natives of the Ozark Mountains of Arkansas. After graduating from Lompoc High School, Combs starred as Captain Fisby in a theater version of The Teahouse of the August Moon while still a senior. After enrolling at Santa Maria's Pacific Conservatory of the Performing Arts, Combs went on to the University of Washington's Professional Actor's Training Program to hone his acting abilities.

Career[]

Herbert West, the lead character in the 1985 film Re-Animator and its two sequels, is Combs's most well-known horror role. In the 1993 movie Necronomicon: Book of the Dead, he played author H. P. Lovecraft, who was the inspiration for the Herbert West character. He has also acted in eight adaptations of Lovecraft's works. Additional film credits include of FeardotCom (2002), House on Haunted Hill (1999), I Still Know What You Did Last Summer (1998), The Frighteners (1996), and The Attic Expeditions (2001). Combs has been in a number of science fiction television programs. In the Babylon 5 original season premiere "Eyes" (1994), he played the telepath Harriman Gray. He appeared in The Attic Expeditions in 2001 as the menacing Dr. Ek. He made his debut as Dr. Kevin Burkhoff on the science fiction series The 4400 in August 2005; by the following year, he was playing a recurring role. He appeared in the Masters of Horror episode "The Black Cat" in early 2007, as a greatly romanticized Edgar Allan Poe. He played a minor role as a highly fictionalized version of L. Frank Baum in the 2012 miniseries Dorothy and the Witches of Oz (often referred to as The Witches of Oz). Combs has experience with voiceover work. The Scarecrow from The New Batman Adventures, the Question from Justice League Unlimited, Ratchet from Transformers: Prime, the Leader from The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes, the Rat King from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and Brainiac from Injustice 2 are just a few of the characters he has voiced. Additionally, he gave a narration for Re-Animator's 25th anniversary at the 2010 FanTasia. When Combs performed as Edgar Allan Poe in a one-man theatrical production of Nevermore...an Evening with Edgar Allan Poe at The Steve Allen Theater in Hollywood, California, in July 2009, he was going back to his theatrical origins. Originally scheduled to run for just one month, it was extended four times until closing in Los Angeles on December 19, 2009, thanks to its great success and sold-out performances. On January 23 and 24, 2010, the production made its East Coast premiere at Poe's ultimate resting place, Westminster Hall in Baltimore, MD. Later, a tour of the Saturn Award-nominated film Nevermore was organized. In 2023, he played Wally in the SpongeBob SquarePants episode "Wallhalla".
