Howdy, were the Mild Ones.
— Incidental 80, Born to Be Wild

The old coot fish[1] is an elderly background character who is almost always seen lying in bed. He lives at Shady Shoals Rest Home and first appears in the episode "Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy."

The old coot fish is light gray with many wrinkles. He has red spots and some short strands of hair on his head. His eyes appear to have tears in them. His bed is green with a checkered pattern on it and it is usually attached to a bamboo frame with wheels.

In "The Good Krabby Name," he is seen walking without his bed. He is revealed to wear a hospital gown that is not seen in any other episodes. His gown is light blue when he is outside and it changes to light green when he is inside the Krusty Krab.

Role in series

"Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy"

When Barnacle Boy calls Mermaid Man an "ol' coot," the old coot fish thinks that he is being talked to. He asks "Yes?" and raises his fin.

In the credits and the original script, he is specifically credited as "Old Coot."

"I Had an Accident"

Patrick gives the old coot fish a bath, thinking that "washing an old person" is a fun activity. Sandy tells him that it is not fun, but the old coot fish insists it is for him.

"Mermaid Man & Barnacle Boy VI: The Motion Picture"

He is briefly seen at Shady Shoals' bingo night. He is smiling and appears to be playing bingo from his bed.

"Born to Be Wild"

The old coot fish is part of the Mild Ones biker gang. He wears a leather jacket and a green helmet with a star on the front. He seems to be the leader of the gang, as he does most of the talking.

When the bikers run into SpongeBob, he grabs onto the old coot fish's jacket and accidentally rips off the "M" in "Mild Ones." This makes him think that the group's name is the Wild Ones.

At the end, the old coot fish returns and introduces the gang to Squidward with their correct name. He also takes back his "M."

"Mermaid Man vs. SpongeBob"

After Plankton hypnotizes Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy, most of the Shady Shoals residents angrily storm out of the rest home. The old coot fish is seen rolling his bed outside.

"The Good Krabby Name"

The old coot fish is one of the boat drivers on the highway. He is seen walking angrily toward the Krusty Krab after SpongeBob and Patrick's advertising technique causes a massive boat crash. When he gets inside the Krusty Krab, he yells as part of an angry mob.

"Call the Cops"

He is one of the many senior citizens in the Bikini Bottom Police Department's evidence room.
